This is due to VANET problems (attenuation, packet losses, changing topology, etc.) and video streaming high requirements. To find out the feasibility of video streaming over VANETs and which error resilience strategies can improve video quality, testing is necessary. A real test with hundreds of vehicles communicating to each other is not an easy to get benchmark. So, modeling vehicular networks is mandatory to predict the behavior of video streaming applications and evaluate the feasibility of deploying vehicular video services. In this paper we present a set of available software tools for VANETs and video streaming modeling. A complete experiment is drawn from scratch to illustrate the usage of these tools.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121992416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, reducing the power consumption during listening plays a fundamental role in the whole energy balance of a sensor node, since shutting down the receiver when no messages are expected can remarkably increase the autonomy. Idle listening is a hard challenge because incoming messages are often unpredictable and developers have to trade off low power consumption and high quality of service. This paper is focusing on benefits of introducing a wake-up receiver over simple duty-cycling (wake-on radio). We analyze and compare the existing wake-up receiver prototypes and explore their benefits using simulations of two typical scenarios: with and without addressing requirements. A particular approach outperforms other solutions in terms of lifetime extension because of its very low power consumption (1$mu$W). We also evaluate the overhead of the addressing capability, which sometimes has a non-negligible impact on the performance.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"458 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114092054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The same kind of compatibility with broadcast may be expected from modern Wi-Fi networks featuring extended-range Access Points (APs). Yet, the 802.11 protocol was not designed with video broadcast in mind, and therefore lacks crucial broadcast mechanisms, most notably, dynamic rate-adaptation and efficient Forward Error Correction (FEC). For satisfactory Quality of Experience (QoE), it is important that the video stream reaches its destination in time and with a minimal amount of errors. Therefore, in live broadcast, retransmissions should generally be avoided, a goal that can only be accomplished using a reliable feedback mechanism that informs transmitters of current packet loss rates.\u0000 In this paper we present a live video transmission model for Wi-Fi MANET networks that dynamically adapts the streams' FEC overhead, by utilizing the fact that in Wi-Fi MANET all nodes are periodically broadcasting beacon frames. By overloading these beacons with packet loss-rate information, the transmitting nodes are able to adapt the rate of FEC-encoded redundant packets, the transmission rate and the modulation scheme, without relying on Wi-Fi ACK frames that are costly and inadequate for broadcast scenarios. Moreover, using beacon frames that are part of the 802.11 standard eliminates the overhead associated with proprietary feedback packets in alternative models of broadcast over Wi-Fi. Thus, our suggested scheme enables Wi-Fi MANET networks to reliably transmit live video over multiple hops. Using NS-3 simulations we validate that our FEC adaptation model is applicative and efficient over one hop. Thereafter, we demonstrate via theoretical analysis the tolerable delay associated with the transmission of video over multiple hops using a pipeline model.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125194925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for monitoring such volatile regions need routing protocols that can tolerate unpredictable changes akin to that found in ad hoc networks, and, due to the stringent resource constraints of WSNs, routing protocols should also be light-weight and efficient. To satisfy these requirements, one of the most capable and widely assimilated protocols is the Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol, which offers low routing, processing, and memory overhead. The ad hoc and on-demand routing capabilities of AODV can efficiently maintain and reconnect unicast routes following incidents such as node demise and environmental changes that can obstruct, break, and fragment the routes. AODV, however, was not originally designed for WSNs in which numerous sensors typically send data to an associated base station or gateway node. It is this unique requirement in WSNs for efficient discovery of a many-to-one routing topology that is addressed in this work by proposing an incremental enhancement to AODV called Base Station Advertisements (BSA). The proposed hybrid protocol, AODV-BSA, offers efficient discovery of a near-optimal many-to-one routing topology by broadcasting a BSA at the network layer to discover near-optimal unicast routes from each sensor to its associated base station (BS). The many-to-one topology is then maintained via the ad hoc and on-demand capabilities of AODV, which provides robust maintenance by efficiently mending breaks and concatenating new extensions to routes in response to node demise and route fragmentation.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114333177","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The characterization of sensor-to-gateway wireless links is clearly important in simulation, as indicated by substantial research efforts to collect experimental traces and model them. Sensor-to-sensor links on the other hand, have received less attention, due to the fact that there is no immediate communication between sensors and, at the same time, it is expensive to collect experimental traces for all node combinations. Nevertheless, these links affect communication when contention-based access protocols are considered, therefore creating a modeling need. In this paper we investigate models for sensor-to-sensor links, in simulation scenarios which employ two established communication standards, namely 802.15.4 and 802.15.6. These standards rely on a mix of CSMA and TDMA to enable wireless communication between sensors and the gateway. We show that sensor-to-sensor links are indeed important in simulation, and investigate the effect of different modeling approaches on application layer results and computational overhead. Moreover, we show the correspondence between two different modeling approaches and suggest the simpler one is sufficient to carry out simulation studies over a wide range of scenarios.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131008229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Queue management orders and manages the messages in the node's buffer, forwarding selects the messages to be delivered when there is a contact and finally replication bounds the number of replicas in the network.\u0000 Contrary to most previous papers, where either only qualitative comparisons have been presented or only a single category of protocols have been analysed, in our work we discuss the results of our experimental activity on many of the DTN protocols in the literature. Our results show that, an effective combination of the proposed techniques, can significantly improve the performance of the protocols in terms of delivery ratio, overhead and delay.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131986651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike the original PSO, particle speed is updated by considering a consensus algorithm based on local optimum position. Two different versions of the algorithm have been simulated: a global version that allows nodes to use information of the whole sensor field and a local version based only on neighborhood information. The algorithm based on global information is used as comparison term for the local version. Also, a variant of these algorithms has been implemented by adding the concept of pioneers, which are powerful sensors that explore the field to detect interesting areas before the other sensors become active. In order to evaluate the performance of our schemes, different scenarios have been introduced by varying the probability areas for events to occur in. The performance of the network has been evaluated in terms of coverage and energy consumption for movement and has shown that the proposed techniques obtain remarkable results for both parameters considered.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130033124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These correlations could be based on hobbies (e.g. sports fan), profession (e.g. work e-mail), day-to-day activities (e.g. news, Internet banking), communication (e.g. instant messaging, social networks), etc. The likelihood of appearance of these correlations in usage data may be influenced by the type of location the user is in. Hobbies and communication related web sites would be more likely to be accessed at home, Profession related web sites would usually be accessed at work. Understanding and capturing this generative process that is based on human interests, behavior and location is the key to the design of future mobile networks. We propose a novel Bayesian mixture model called the \"Global Local' model based on the \"POWER\" model that can realistically describe Internet usage and correlations with various locations inside a large mobile society. The \"POWER\" model is a new class of mixture models where components compete to produce a single data point, this model allows for the discovery of complex overlapping patterns of user's Internet behavior. The \"Global Local\" model learns a global template of user's Internet behavior patterns using the \"POWER\" model first, then learns correlations between the templates and locations inside a large mobile society. We design a learning algorithm that can effectively learn the \"Global Local\" model from Internet usage data, and demonstrate its capabilities using synthetic data. Finally, we analyze a real-world Internet usage data for thousands of users collected via wireless LAN traces and discover many interesting correlations that can be explained very intuitively.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132789685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, we develop and validate the interference model based on SINR metric for the deployment of the LTE network, and then we use greedy algorithms to show how frequency and tilt parameter settings can impact the coverage performance metric. This demand requires not only being attached to a network, but possibly to the best performing one, or at least to a network able to fulfill the user requirements. In order to choose the best network among different alternatives, the IEEE 802.21 standard has been developed. In this paper we propose a Vertical Handover (VHO) strategy which considers the maximum data rate per user as one of the decision criteria. We evaluate our proposal by means of packet delivery latency, channel throughput, usage dwell-time, and VHO event latency, under different network conditions. We demonstrate that the IEEE 802.21 standard must be used to perform vertical handovers when taking context into account to make an accurate decision. Moreover, we show that considering only the technology availability is not always the best criteria to choose the candidate network to perform the handover.","PeriodicalId":311005,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Performance Monitoring, Measurement, and Evaluation of Heterogeneous Wireless and Wired Networks","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121120389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
