Travel prose by Jerzy Pilch, 1993) which seem to bid farewell to the long duration of Polish romanticism. The three works concur with Maria Janion’s thesis who heralded, in a democratic and independent Poland after the political changes of 1989, the twilight of the romantic paradigm as it had existed since the first half of the nineteenth century. The first time she appears in his texts is as the author of Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil – a bookthat the writer considered an exceptionally important voice in reflections about the nature of totalitarian systems and in the dispute over the nature of evil both in individual and metaphysical sense. Arendt’s analyses of basic dehumanisation mechanisms were close to him; he is fascinated by the soundness of Arendt’s key thesis on the ‘banality of evil.’ At the same time, Herling-Grudziński disputes with Arendt, indicating certain shortcomings in her thinking, mostly related to cognitive limitations resulting from herproposed take on the key problematics and partial disconsonance between theoretical disquisitions and existential experience. This criticism is limited and eventually Herling-Grudziński himself disputes with Arendt’s main critics. Instead of building general analogies, I studied two very specific topics – the world and birth – to demonstrate that Arendt repeated almost verbatim Rosenzweig’s entire peculiar argumentation which played the notions of God and nature against each other to combat their overwhelming power and to make room for the contingency of the world and the novelty of each birth. Facing the helplessness of a philosophy which ignored mortality, Rosenzweig cried out the lament of the finite being. Philosophy, with its predilection for totality, lost adequate proportions to reflect on life. Arendt revived this paradigmatic reorientation, but with a significant twist: for her, birth and the world meant more than God for Rosenzweig. Koc","doi":"10.14746/pspsl.2020.37.3","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14746/pspsl.2020.37.3","url":null,"abstract":"The author analyses Hannah Arendt’s writings in search of inspirations for reflecting on the contemporary world’s problems in humanistic (school) education, finding such inspirations in the topics that interested the author of The Human Condition and in her perception of politics, citizenship and thinking as such. Koc’s thesis is that educational documents show a clear deficit of reflection on current challenges, often transnational, that need to be analysed from multiple angles. The article emphasises Arendt’s warningsabout non-thinking as an attitude conducive to totalitarianism, which should unsettle anyone interested in the concept of educating young people. Arendt observed the ressentiment and contempt of educated people towards society that grew since the mid-eighteenth century. In Conrad’s prose, a specific culmination of such emotions can be found in the character of the Professor in The Secret Agent novel. Scruton understood a totalitarian state as an institutionalised form of executing ressentiment. Another crucial common point of reference for the three authors was the issue of authority.Scruton reminded us that society exists thanks to authority. The opposite of ressentiment seems to be affirmation, while revolutionary aims of radicalrevaluation can be contrasted with conservatism as a philosophy of attachment to what is valuable. An extensive collection of them can be found in their yearbooks. This article’s object of interest is Pochwała Józefa Szymanowskiego [Praise of Józef Szymanowski] by Stanisław Kostka Potocki, which was oftentimes cited as an example of exorbitant rhetoric in the past. It discusses author’s metacomment in contemporary biographies, articles on archive research, memoirs and novels (by A. Y. Kaplan, Ryszard Matuszewski, J. P. Sartre, Monika Rudaś-Grodzka, Joanna Krakowska, Joanna Kuciel-Frydryszak, Olof Lagercrantz and others). The first part explores rather theoretical problems chosen by the author during his current work. Among them is the titular problem – the crucial moment in somebody’s life, with all its consequences. The second part contains the opening excerpt from Bobkowski’s biography recently written by the author. According to the researcher, it sets up the biographer’s tone and the whole approach to the subject.
