In this paper we introduce a novel facial feature representation to enhance the robustness of face recognition against pose and illumination changes. Here we combined Gabor wavelets and Cross Lo- cal Binary Patterns for facial feature representation. Gabor wavelets are known to extract shape information by detecting shape attributes like edges, corners and blobs. Cross Local Binary Patterns can be used for better feature representation in two levels. Probabilistic Linear Discriminant Analysis (PLDA) minimizes the intra-class distance and maximizes the inter-class distances and generates a model for classification purposes. During recognition, PLDA estimates the likelihood of the probe image in the gallery image set. Experimental results on YALE, FERET and our internal datasets show the significance of this method.","PeriodicalId":309250,"journal":{"name":"2017 UKSim-AMSS 19th International Conference on Computer Modelling & Simulation (UKSim)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122463211","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence in this study, extraction of human gait silhouette using Haar Cascade classifier is developed. This is done by detecting the region of interests (ROI) and by cropping the selected areas followed by background subtraction to eliminate unwanted background and further convert the images to silhouettes form based on human gait sequences acquired. Next, human abnormality gait detection is conducted based on front view markerless model. Classification results attained showed that the developed Haar cascade classifier is indeed suitable and robust in extracting front view gait features for abnormality gait detection with detection time of KNN surpass the SVM classifier.","PeriodicalId":309250,"journal":{"name":"2017 UKSim-AMSS 19th International Conference on Computer Modelling & Simulation (UKSim)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131141152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous work has shown a deep neural network can be trained to approximate the ideal mask, but at a substantial computational cost. We present a method to assess the impact of reducing the mask by averaging time and frequency bins, so that the computational cost can be significantly reduced. Our work uses the original separate musical channels mask as a ground truth and compares this against an ideal binary mask and an ideal ”soft” or proportional mask. The ideal soft mask is then compared against masks produced by a range of averaging levels. We find that averaging could produce a reduction by a factor of 16 in the number of weights in the neural network (and thus a significant improvement in computation time), while still achieving plausible results in terms of source separation.","PeriodicalId":309250,"journal":{"name":"2017 UKSim-AMSS 19th International Conference on Computer Modelling & Simulation (UKSim)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121112457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, a software control strategy for regulating the amount of internal positive and negative air pressure inside pneumatic soft robots is presented. Since the air pressure has a direct effect on the amount of deformation, the position of the robot is controlled. Pressure control was implemented with a fuzzy logic controller, which is described with its performance shown. The approach can be integrated into any specified soft robotic actuator requiring pneumatic actuation e.g. bending, triangular and muscle actuators.","PeriodicalId":309250,"journal":{"name":"2017 UKSim-AMSS 19th International Conference on Computer Modelling & Simulation (UKSim)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124919461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This increased complexity is due to the integration of components built using multiple technologies. In this environment, companies are turning to open source software components to reduce software development time. These freely available open source components are often tried and tested by the software development community. Similar to open sourcing, inner sourcing involves the reuse of software components from other sections within large organizations. As with open sourcing, inner sourcing is experiencing a high adoption. Companies such as Philips, PayPal and Ericsson use open source software in an internal capacity to encourage the reuse of components. The challenge for system architects considering inner sourced components is to (a) determine the complexity, reliability, usage and therefore the importance of individual components within an overall product (b) assess the impact and importance of any individual component when components can differ in scale and technology. This work proposes CALAIS - A Component Analysis Learning Algorithm for Inner Source Development. CALAIS is a self-directed artificial neural network which uses historic performance to weigh the relative importance of an individual component within a system architecture. CALAIS operates by analyzing complexity, reliability, and usage. Using CALAIS, system architects can gain a fine grained view of the structural relevance of all system components proposed for inner sourcing. This view can be used to promote the delivery of high quality components within an inner source project.","PeriodicalId":309250,"journal":{"name":"2017 UKSim-AMSS 19th International Conference on Computer Modelling & Simulation (UKSim)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115263329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the years many different formulations and structures were established to model hybrid systems and run their simulation. In general hybrid systems embrace different model behaviour to describe a process, mostly a mixture of discrete and continuous model structures. An example of this behaviour is the bouncing ball: The event of the ball reaching the ground has to be detected to enable the change in a model behaviour. This changing process is a hybrid system behaviour. In this paper three different descriptions and the established formalism for hybrid systems are compared. The different advantages and disadvantages of these formulations will be discussed. To analyse this in detail, all three formalisms will be applied on the bouncing ball example.","PeriodicalId":309250,"journal":{"name":"2017 UKSim-AMSS 19th International Conference on Computer Modelling & Simulation (UKSim)","volume":"238 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123300497","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We present two adaptive power control schemes that adapt the transmission power based on the dynamic network conditions and node residual energy. In the first approach, all nodes use the same transmission power. In the second approach, nodes use independent transmission powers and operate in a purely distributed fashion. We show that through energy management the lifetime could be significantly extended. Our evaluation shows that adaptation leads to a further improvement of 15% to 50% both in end-to-end delay and in duty cycles of the nodes.","PeriodicalId":309250,"journal":{"name":"2017 UKSim-AMSS 19th International Conference on Computer Modelling & Simulation (UKSim)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116439539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
