However, the irregular characteristics of the tunnels and the interference that occurs in underground mines (UM) makes it difficult to implement traditional communication systems, such as those based on radio frequency (RF). Therefore, a practical and viable solution is to complement RF systems with infrastructure based on visible light communication (VLC) systems. This emerging technology can provide robust communication and continuous lighting in harsh environments. Nevertheless, to date, specific VLC systems for UM have not been widely developed or studied, although there is extensive literature on VLC applications in other non-hostile environments. In this paper, a study on the special physical characteristics and external factors of UM that affect the performance of VLC systems applied to these environments is presented. Particular factors considered include orientation of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and photo-diodes (PDs), non-uniform walls, shadowing produced by heavy machinery, and scattering produced by dust particles. The impulse response of the optical UM channel and the received power distribution in the underground mining scenario are presented. Numerical results through simulations show and validate the adverse effect of the UM features on the VLC channel.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130490037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve these goals, 5G Radio Access Techniques (RAT) require unprecedentedly accurate time synchronization of network elements. Therefore, synchronization performance evaluation is essential in system design. We evaluated the performance of time synchronization networks for 5G Front/Mid-Haul Transport systems. In the time domain, we simulated clock systems as defined by ITU-T in the Full Timing Support architecture, where frequency and time synchronization are achieved via Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE) and IEEE 1588 / Precision Time Protocol (PTP), respectively. Clock models have been coded in Simulink modules, which can be combined to simulate various network topologies. In this paper, we present simulations of clocks and ring synchronization networks for 5G Front/Mid-Haul, considering generated noise and rearrangements after link failures. Experimental measurements on real equipment were carried out, to tune model parameters and for comparison with simulation results.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129348448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This arrangement improves the spectral efficiency and robustness of the transmission of data by avoiding the use of Cyclic Prefix (CP). The results show that pilot aided FBMC frame can be employed in digital TV applications. We use the measurement samples and the close-in (CI) model, to characterize the large scale propagation parameters. Our results show that the floor attenuation factor (FAF) path loss increases at average of 2.93 dB per building floor. At LOS conditions path loss exponent (PLE) was 1.02 and for the five floors, the average PLE was 1.59. We verified the accuracy of the CI model using the FAF and the empirical reference values with an average error of 1.19 dB compared to 6.64 dB theoretical data calculated. From the statistical analysis, we showed that the received power cumulative density function follows a Gaussian distribution. Our measurement analysis proves the feasibility of using the 5.84 GHz frequency as a tolerable industry path loss average of 110.76 dB for the O2I multi-storey environment.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122994647","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the end of this year, the Internet will connect about 7 billion smart things. They are part of solutions ranging from Smart Cities to telemetry collection for Industrial applications generating a colossal amount of real-time streaming data. Cloud-based services have also being evolved from pure IaaS providing Virtual Machines to sophisticated PaaS, SaaS, and FaaS designed explicitly for Big Data, Analytics and IoT, they all exhibiting serverless architectures. Moreover, Information Retrieval (IR) is becoming a crucial application layer on top of IoT application for searching and retrieving relevant data on the real-time streaming collections, on sensors, or things. In the last years, a significant set of approaches have been explored IoT, Big Data, and IoT Search Engines. However, the cybersecurity has not been meticulously researched. Neither for IoT nor IR, as a critical component at searching on the IoT. In this paper, we present an approach to consider cybersecurity as an IR dimension for cloud-based edge-powered searching over IoT from a theoretical perspective, we compare through a compact survey the related works and finalise with a multi-perspective discussion to embrace cybersecurity in the IoT/IoTSE architectures.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116038958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of this, systems must be increasingly efficient and immune to failures. One of the ways to improve network efficiency is to use dynamic systems. One of the solutions is the use of ACOP (Adaptive Control of Operating Point) techniques, which consists of autonomously choosing the best operating point for optical amplifiers on the link, thus providing the best configuration in terms of QoT (Quality of transmission). Unlike the previous works that focused on optimizing QoT and OSNR (Optical Signal-To-Noise Ratio), our proposal is focused on maximizing the transmission rate. In this paper, we deploy a global optimizer, called Particle Swarm Optimization, to solve the ACOP problem and choose the best configuration for an optical link concerning the transmission rate. We showed that our proposal outperforms the previous ACOP approaches found in the literature for a set of link scenarios concerning the transmission rate.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125998348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This scheme alleviates the impact of monochromatic degradation of the visible light channel while still providing the regular space and time diversity gains. This scheme can be used in a single-input and single-output (SISO) system as well as in multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems and can be expanded to higher order color shift keying (CSK) modulations. Simulations were made to compare the performance of the proposed scheme to the traditional QuadLED (QLED) CSK system without any coding for SISO and MIMO systems. The results show that gains of up to 13dB can be achieved by this coding scheme under strong monochromatic channel degradation.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128116317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of IoT devices have security vulnerabilities, making them susceptible to Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. Thus, it is necessary to apply solutions that can detect it in IoT networks based on data about the network traffic. However, there is no standard of the most suitable traffic characteristics for DDoS detection, since the use of inappropriate characteristics harms the detection. Within this context, this paper presents an analysis of the most important traffic characteristics for detecting DDoS in IoT networks, in order to support a detection mechanism based on Machine Learning (ML). Experiments using a real dataset suggest that the proposed mechanism has an accuracy close to 99% when the most suitable characteristics are selected.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123367710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the existence of a few initiatives to orchestrate the collection of in-band network statistics, little has yet been done to coordinate active INT probes to collect network information efficiently while considering the possibility of device failures (e.g., power failure, hardware failure). In this paper, we introduce Patcher - fault-tolerant probing planning for INT. It reconstructs probing cycles affected by failure nodes and optimizes them while ensuring all non-affected links/statistics are still being traversed/collected. Results show that Patcher reduces the number of probe cycles needed up to 5.5x compared to a state-of-the-art solution, while not increasing the INT collectors' load.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124456430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
