Using CNNs as a pre-processor leads to optimizing receiver efficiency to maximize packet transmission reliability while minimizing the complexity of receiver processing. This state of art technique showed high accuracy using a supervised deep learning classification for raw base-band packets. Although the approach is considered a blind technique, in literature it is dependent on the channel power delay profile (PDP). i.e. there are different CNNs for each channel profile with fixed Doppler frequency shifts. Besides that, for some channel profiles, there is an overfitting problem that leads to performance degradation at higher SNR levels. Here we propose a solution for both issues, first by introducing regularization to eliminate the over-fitting problem appeared in literature, then we introduce a channel profile independent approach which significantly reduces the system complexity by replacing multiple CNNs with one and eliminating the need for prior identification of channel's PDP. And finally, we propose also an SNR values-based order training technique that allows tuning the performance vs SNR.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129083175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the biggest health treats to older adults are falls occurring at home during daily activities. This reality has prompted the design of device-free fall detection systems that employ WiFi signals as sensing probes. Several works have addressed the design and development of these detection platforms. However, these works have not considered the impact of the antenna orientation on the system's sensing capabilities. To close the gap, we present a systematic analysis of the effects of antenna orientation on the performance of a WiFi-based fall detection systems. The analysis was conducted on the grounds of an experimental platform that transmits WiFi-like waveforms from which the Doppler signature of a fall event can be computed. Our work shows how the orientation of the antenna affects spectrograms of the received probe signal. The results also show that signals transmitted with a horizontal positioning improve the performance in the classification stage.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126799788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given that the VNFs are virtualized, a network operator needs to solve two problems to efficiently deploy them: VNF placement and VNF scheduling. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to solve the two problems at the same time, placing and scheduling the VNFs on demand, and taking the software requirements into consideration, in a way that traditional distributed computing schedulers can be used. The proposed algorithm was evaluated via simulation against three other schedulers. Results showed that the algorithm is able to increase, by 19.7%, the number of completed VNFs in a scenario with 16540 VNFs being instantiated.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126842839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike conventional MIMO systems where all the signal processing is carried out in the digital domain, Hybrid Analog-Digital (HAD) signal processing or hybrid beamforming has the potential to reduce cost and power consumption. In this paper, a novel hybrid beamforming architecture based on the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm is exploited for a single-user system in which massive antenna array is operated by a limited number of transmit and receive RF chains. A simulation model is studied for performance of the hybrid beamformer compared to conventional digital beamformer of the proposed system. Results show spectral efficiency as performance metric which shows near optimal efficiency using hybrid beamforming weights compared to the digital weights.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121551927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, as IoT grows, its threats are even greater. The false data injection (FDI) attack stands out as being one of the most harmful to data networks like IoT. The majority of current systems to handle this attack do not take into account the data validation, especially on the data clustering service. This work introduces CONFINIT, an intrusion detection system against FDI attacks on the data dissemination service into dense IoT. It combines watchdog surveillance and collaborative consensus among IoT devices for getting the swift detection of attackers. CONFINIT was evaluated in the NS-3 simulator into a dense industrial IoT and it has gotten detection rates of 99%, 3.2% of false negative and 3.6% of false positive rates, adding up to 35% in clustering without FDI attackers.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122557576","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) enable continuous and real-time monitoring of physiological signals, but that monitoring leads to an excessive data transmission usage, and drastically affects the power consumption of the devices. Although there are approaches for reducing energy consumption, many of them do not consider information redundancy to reduce the power consumption. This paper proposes a hybrid approach of local data compression, called GROWN, to decrease information redundancy during data transmission and reduce the energy consumption. Our approach combines local data compression methods found in WSN. We have evaluated GROWN by experimentation, and the results show a decrease in energy consumption of the devices and an increase in network lifetime.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127861099","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper aims to fill an important gap in the open literature by providing an accurate, open-source, and widely applicable RIS channel model for mmWave frequencies. Our model is not only applicable in various indoor and outdoor environments but also includes the physical aspects of wireless propagation in the presence of an RIS as well as various practical 5G channel modeling issues. The open-source and comprehensive SimRIS Channel Simulator is also introduced in this paper to be used in computer simulations of RIS-assisted communication systems.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115711454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
