They connect people and provide support to applications and services. To meet the daily requirements of business, computer networks themselves are becoming quite complex. This work provides a methodology and analytical models for supporting the optimal design of computer networks. Our approach integrates communication and power infrastructures considering dependability and business aspects. A case study is presented to illustrate the methodology on a computer network and the results showed a significant reduction in the complexity of the infrastructure design.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131605140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More precisely, let $G=(V, E)$ be a complete graph with a set of wireless devices $V$ (nodes) and a set of connection links $E$ (edges) representing the VLC network. We consider the problem of partitioning $kleq vert Vvert$ vertices into disjoint cliques of size of at most $lfloorfrac{k}{t}rfloor+1$ nodes where $t < k (k, tin mathbb{Z}_{+})$ such that the total power received plus the residual energy of each of the $k$ chosen nodes is maximized. Recall that clustering the sensor nodes of a network allows handling efficiently problems related to scalability, and routing, to name a few. In order to achieve the grouping task optimally, we propose integer linear and quadratic programming models based on classical combinatorial optimization problems from the literature. In order to compare our proposed models, we assume that every node in the network can communicate through a direct line of sight (DLOS) VLC channel. Our preliminary numerical results indicate that the quadratic model together with its linearized counterpart are the best ones as they allow to solve to optimality all tested instances in significantly less computational effort.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124686033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several studies on the characteristics of radio propagation in the bands used by the IEEE standard are being carried out worldwide. In this paper, we evaluate two urban path loss models and four specific path loss models for vegetated environments, based on a measurement campaign performed in an urban environment with a strong presence of vegetation, typical of living areas, squares and urban parks where IoT technologies should be commonly implemented in the coming years. The models proposed by TGah were also evaluated. Based on empirical data, the most accurate models are determined. The characterization of large-scale fading and small-scale fading are presented.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122112598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Duty Cycling is a widely used technique in the design of Medium Access Control protocols since by controlling the on and off radio it is possible to reduce energy consumption. This article introduces a Duty Cycling-based Medium Access Control protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks that considers battery information to adjust Duty Cycling sleep time. The proposed Duty Cycling is based on Process-Stacking Multiplexing Access Protocol with the difference that the proposed protocol calculates the remaining energy in the battery using a different approach, thus allowing the use of State of Charge estimation algorithms. The results obtained demonstrate how the sleep time windows can be adjusted according to the requirements of the sensor nodes and the amount of energy available in the battery.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122116528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Emerging bandwidth-hungry applications demand new solutions based on terahertz (THz) systems. This work proposes a GaAs/AlAs nanocolumn-Resonant Tunneling Diode (Nano-RTD) device as a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) for frequency generation in the THz spectrum window, i.e., Y-band (325 - 500 GHz). A comprehensive semianalytical approach to evaluating the performance of the Nano-RTD VCO device is developed. The latter addresses the oscillation frequency, maximum oscillation frequency, tuning range, output power, DC consumption power, and DC/AC conversion efficiency. Moreover, the oscillation stability of the designed device in the Y-band was numerically verified. Results shown that the device can operate in the Y-band (@ ~500 GHz and 300 K), with a very-low DC power consumption down to 0.16 mW, along with a good DC/AC conversion efficiency (2.4%). The Nano-RTD VCO is compatible with current CMOS fabrication technology and has a very compact footprint (2000 nm2). Finally, the device may be used as part of system solutions to satisfying emerging THz wireless applications such as in-body nano-communication, wireless nano-networks, and network-on-chip.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115748764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the most popular ways to achieve this result is Tor. The anonymity and untraceability that Tor provides, however, can also be used by ill-intentioned users who try to take advantage of bypassing security control and policies. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) mentions two methods of recognizing Tor traffic in the enterprise: indicator- or behavior-based analysis. The first one uses log analysis and lists of Tor exit nodes to identify the suspicious activity while the latter inspects patterns in TCP and UDP ports, DNS queries and inspecting the payload of the packets. In this paper, we propose a different approach using white-box machine learning models such as decision trees and Random Forest. On the one hand, our classifier achieves accuracy levels above 95%. On the other hand, our approach is the first one to allow understanding the importance of each traffic feature in the classification. Our results demonstrate that the TCP window size, the frame size and time related traffic features can be used to identify Tor traffic. In this paper we will describe a Machine Learning methodology used to identify Tor network traffic utilizing decision trees C5.0 and Random Forest. We followed a white-box approach and accomplished accuracy of over 95% in the prediction in both models. We also present an analysis of the importance of the top predictor variables.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115157529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is assumed that the sensors communicate with the owner device over ultra-wide-band (UWB) and the owner device only records the received signal strength (RSS) values. Based on the RSS data, which are obtained from a field test, two algorithms are proposed, first, when there is only one UWB sensor transmitting from the car, and second, when there are three such transmitters available. For the single transmitter case, we used a multi-slope method for RSS-based ranging which yielded an average improvement of 2.5% in ranging accuracy over the basic linear regression model. For the three transmitter case, we are estimating distance of the receiver from the transmitters in an individual manner and then enhance the accuracy of the distance estimates with the knowledge of the other distances. The algorithm is simple, can act with heterogeneous sensor types and do not require time synchronization among transmitters, yet achieve an 8% improvement in ranging accuracy.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117284672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventional adaptive filtering theory suggests that the upper bound on performance of such an equalizer is determined by the performance of a Wiener filter of the same structure. However, in the presence of a narrowband interferer the performance of the (normalized) LMS equalizer can be better than that of its Wiener counterpart. The Bi-scale NLMS (BLMS) algorithm enhances this NLMS (Normalized LMS) characteristic by simultaneously using two instantiations of NLMS that run at very different time scales. In this paper, the derivation of a predictive model for the MSE (Mean Square Error) performance of the BLMS equalizer as narrowband interference canceler is shown. The predictive model can be used to adjust canceler parameters on the fly without the delay needed for time-consuming simulations. Simulation results validate the proposed MSE model, which is shown to predict performance of the BLMS equalizer over a wide range of parameters.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127198180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, the centralization and planes' separation can turn SDNs vulnerable to new types of denial of service attacks. Existing intrusion detection approaches are not in general suitable for restricted networks or do not achieve optimal detection rates. This work aims at fulfilling both requirements by using a new lightweight, multimetric, online change point detector to monitor performance metrics that are impacted when the network is under attack. There are two major novelties in the proposed detector referring to previous works: first, we move to a purely online detector, secondly, we monitor in parallel multiple metrics, increasing the detection vector space to different types of attack. Our tests show that intrusion detection monitoring control overhead and data packets delivery rate in a SDWSN results in enhanced detection rates over 96% in all topologies and levels of attacks. We finally show that with a high probability (exceeding 89% in all cases) it is possible to identify the “type” of the attack.","PeriodicalId":309189,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications (LATINCOM)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126465772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
