The method is based on the principle of decomposition of the global system into interconnected subsystems for which we consider that non-linearities are located in the interconnection terms. Then, a mixed method is considered to coordinate between different subsystems in order to compute the optimal control. So, for each subsystem, local optimal feedback gains are expressed in terms of the interconnection vector. For this purpose, neural networks have been used in order to identify these gains. Simulation results of a rotary crane show that the proposed method yields to satisfactory performances. The robustness of the proposed approach is analysed.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122038957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, we consider the situation where system and its components have several ranges of performance levels. Such systems are called multi-state systems (MSS). To enhance system availability or (reliability), possible schedule preventive maintenance actions are performed to equipments and affect strongly the effective age. The MSS measure is related to the ability of the system to satisfy the demand. The objective is to develop an algorithm to generate an optimal sequence of maintenance actions providing system working with the desired level of availability or (reliability) during its lifetime with minimal maintenance cost rate. To evaluate the MSS system availability, a fast method based on UGF is suggested. The harmony search approach can be applied as an optimization technique and adapted to this PM optimization problem.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122386126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The country imports around 97% of its needs of energy in the form of fossil fuel resulting in a high energy import bill. Despite major steps done towards improving the energy sector, the country is striving to meet the energy demand of its population. In order to face this problem, the use of renewable energy and particularly the solar thermal energy represent one of the most promising alternative strategies. Indeed, Lebanon is located in a relatively sunny area with an average global horizontal radiation of 2200 kWh/m2 per year. The residential sector represents 30% of the total energy consumption and thus offers an interesting opportunity for the development of the solar thermal market. In this paper an attempt is made to investigate the impact of the use of solar thermal equipments for heating and cooling on energy savings in the residential sector in Lebanon. The energy consumption is calculated for a typical building for four climatic zones using a validated transient simulation model. The payback period is calculated for each system in the four climatic zones. The analysis of the results showed that the solar domestic hot water system has a payback period of less than seven years, while the heating and cooling systems showed higher payback periods at current market prices. Prospects for the development of this sector are discussed at the end of this paper.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121330116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Risk assessments and information security remain a crucial challenge of small enterprise information systems. The problem increases its complexity with medium and large enterprise information systems, and becomes a bottleneck when different partners have to exchange information and collaborate through distributed business processes. In this paper, we distinguish between steady and dynamic environments in which information systems are deployed and monitored. We demonstrate that a global security policy must be adapted at any time to address new changes in dynamic environments cope with new challenges in risk management. We introduce a holistic approach for risk and security management through the definition of Service Characteristics Infrastructure (SCI) including certificate authorities, signed service characteristics, security policies.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126984975","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The target objective of this work is to exploit mobile-to-mobile cooperation in order to lower energy consumption and increase system throughput in hybrid WLAN/Bluetooth wireless networks while guaranteeing quality of service. We model the problem of video distribution in wireless networks with mobile-to-mobile cooperation as an integer optimization problem that minimizes a given cost function. Cost is presented as a function of the energy consumption at mobile terminals, quality of service, and fairness. A genetic algorithm is used to solve the proposed problem and results demonstrate the potential gains of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":308909,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Advances in Computational Tools for Engineering Applications","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125599804","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
