Solana","doi":"10.4312/VH.25.1.117-132","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4312/VH.25.1.117-132","url":null,"abstract":"The aim of this paper is to examine, from a strictly linguistic perspective, a phenomenon that has been gaining ground in recent years, especially in the field of politics and social activism: the use in Spanish of feminine forms with an extensive value (referring to beings of both sexes) as a strategy to make women more visible, and as a stylistic alternative to the simultaneous use of both the masculine and feminine form. After comparing the underlying assumptions of the feminists’ position with some linguistic principles, we analyze the conditions under which the generic interpretations of feminine forms take place in ordinary language. We then present the problems that the generalization of the phenomenon can give rise to: limitation of «displacement» capacity (Hockett, 1960), poor processing effort / cognitive effect ratio, and difficulty in accomplishing the communicative function of language. This brings us to the point that the generic feminine is most unlikely to become established in general uses of Spanish; it also seem not to be feasible to achieve a free alternation of masculine and feminine forms as a means of expressing gender neutralization. The article examines the presence and the selection of Spanish and Hispanic American literature in Slovene secondary schools between 1945 and 2017, taking into account sociopolitical, cultural and didactic factors. The analysis is based on all syllabuses for Slovene during this period and all text books for literature used and edited since the end of the second world war in Slovenia. Therefore the role of literature written in Spanish is analysed for two different sociopolitical contexts: Yugoslavia and the independent Republic of Slovenia. The aim of the article is to find out whether the presence and the role of Spanish language literature in Spanish has increased or decreased during this period and which are the authors and literary works which 19-year-old Slovenes who complete grammar school and continue their studies at the university are/were acquainted with. Riccardi","doi":"10.4312/VH.25.1.197-216","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4312/VH.25.1.197-216","url":null,"abstract":"The aim of our analysis is to study a section of the narrative production of the Uruguayan writer Carlos Liscano (Montevideo, 1949), focusing on the short story La historia interminable in the collection of the author’s stories Oficio de ventriloquia I, published between 1981 and 2011. We seek to understand, on the one hand, how the writer conceives an intratextual conection between his own narrative work and “La historia interminable” and, on the other hand, how he establishes an intertextual dialogue with Borges’ La biblioteca de Babel. La historia interminable maintains a thematic continuity with Liscano’s entire narrative production with the leitmotiv of how to match life with writing and does so in two ways. First it creates a series of characters who in turn multiply infinitely, which can be read as reflecting a human need to create a potentially infinite literary corpus as means of attaining “immortality through writing”. Second, the short story offers a reflection on the human obsession with absolute knowledge and the desire to know everything and to narrate everything and indeed seems to present a critical re-elaboration of this obsession; in the story, the identity of the writer dissipates after his death, precisely because nobody can cover all his work.
