Brillouin Time Domain Reflectometry (BOTDR) was used to monitor the deformation. The principle is based on the measurement of the stimulated Brillouin scattering. The whole experiment was carried out during the construction of the motorway tunnel in Slovakia. As part of the construction of the tunnel, the standard optical telecommunication fiber was attached to the primary tunnel beams that was subsequently used as a sensor for the BOTDR system. The sensor allows monitoring and analysis of the load on the highway tunnel to ensure the safety of the structural load. In total, there were 6 measurement days, which were scheduled in 5 months of tunnel construction.","PeriodicalId":307663,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (ICCSTE'19)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129767075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Initial measurements were performed on a Heckert FP 10/1 press. Based on these measurements, a prototype of a bending sensor for vehicle detection was designed. This prototype is intended primarily for static vehicle detection, where the magnitude of attenuation is proportional to the weight of the car. When measuring on this prototype, we tested 4 types of ethylene propylene diene methylene (EPDM) grooved rubber that pressed on an optical fibre located on smooth EPDM rubber base. Based on the measurements, we chose the EPDM rubber cover for which the detector had the greatest sensitivity. These initial results indicate that this can be a life-capable structure with a possible extension to a static weight sensor and, partly, to a WIM (weigh in motion) dynamic weight sensor.","PeriodicalId":307663,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (ICCSTE'19)","volume":"150 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122253427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The distinctive behaviour of ECC, makes it ductile as compared to brittle nature of conventional concrete. Ductile nature of ECC, makes it applicable in seismic resistant, repairing and retrofitting areas and blast resistant structural elements. In the present investigation, two types of polymer fibers (i.e. polyester (PET) fiber and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber) have been used in hybridization with different percentages (2+0), (2+0.5), (1.75+0.5), (1.5+0.5) for making ECC. Also fly ash, 55% of the total cementitious material, has been used for making sustainable concrete. The compressive, flexural and tensile tests were performed to evaluate the mechanical behaviour of hybrid fiber reinforced cementitious matrix. The test results revealed that PET fiber and PVA fiber in combination enhanced the strength properties of ECC by bridging effect of hybrid fibers.","PeriodicalId":307663,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (ICCSTE'19)","volume":"7 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123278733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For a very specific conditions, the dependent suspension types are still preferred, mainly in case of heavier trucks. Ordinary leaf spring material-steel is being replaced by a variety of composite materials. For the dynamic simulation of the vehicle, the greater importance than a material type, lies in the layout of the suspension. The tandem bogie layout of the multileaf spring suspension has many differences in its behaviour in comparison with ordinary layoutset of two separated multileaf springs allocated to one axle. In the first part of the paper, these differences are listed and explainedmainly the ability of load sharing between the axles. The second part deals with specific aspects of the FEM model, along with the necessary analytical background. The third part consists of various simulation cases with different initial conditionsdifferent constrains, pretension and spring as tyre stiffness. In the last part, the effect of the aforementioned conditions are evaluated and commented. The variations of the hysteresis loops, in force-displacements characteristics, along with derived linear stiffness’s and its behaviour are recommended to be understood for additional application. Therefore, the conclusions are drawn for further utilization of gathered data for the full vehicle simulation.","PeriodicalId":307663,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (ICCSTE'19)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132570815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Kabul City Groundwater and Need for Artificial Recharge","authors":"K. Noori, M. Nasimi","doi":"10.11159/ICCSTE19.215","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11159/ICCSTE19.215","url":null,"abstract":"The subject of this paper is the study of Kabul groundwater and need for artificial recharge. According to studies, water depth in Kabul city had significant decrease since 1963. As per observations done by AGS (Afghanistan Geological Survey) in cooperation with USGS (United States Geological Survey), groundwater level in central Kabul sub basin decreased up to 25 meters, which by continuation of this trend, Kabul city will face water shortages in the next few years. This study investigates the reason of lowering the ground water table and finding the appropriate methods for groundwater artificial recharge. In part of this study, amount of annual rainwater of Kabul city is calculated and compared with annual required water for Kabul city inhabitants. It was found that reasons for lowering groundwater levels are illegal drilling of deep wells, excessive use of groundwater to meet the needs of drinking, industrial, irrigation and agriculture purposes. Another major reason for reducing the amount of groundwater is a significant reduction in recharge process due to urbanization and reduction in rainfall amount. The immediate solution for the concerns of groundwater reduction is recharging the aquifer through rooftop rainwater. The findings of this study show that the the amount of water consumed in Kabul city is much higher than the amount of recharge water, and there is a serious need for the management of groundwater in Kabul to prevent future water losses.","PeriodicalId":307663,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (ICCSTE'19)","volume":"29 Suppl 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122180515","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents an analysis of using an innovative viscous plane damper in the gap between adjacent reinforced concrete (RC) buildings subjected to seismic loads. For this purpose, parallel RC structures of three and six storeys are considered, and a viscous plane damper is implemented in the gap between the two adjacent structures. The effect of the viscos plane damper on the pounding of the considered adjacent RC structure is studied. The finite element modelling and seismic time history analysis of the buildings were performed using Arcs 3D software to prepare the building model. The maximum displacements in horizontal, transverse, and vertical directions are evaluated. Two stages of analysis were conducted. The first stage analysed three-storey and six-storey buildings independently. The results of the first stage were validated with experimental and numerical results. The second stage was analysed by combining two buildings with different storey heights with and without the viscous plane damper. The results showed an effective reduction in displacement values at around 23.15% horizontally, 35.5% transversely, and 14.0% vertically. Therefore, the innovative damper significantly decreased pounding between RC buildings.","PeriodicalId":307663,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (ICCSTE'19)","volume":"E-7 2/3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114125794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The SCBA is an agricultural waste which is obtained as by-product from the combustion of sugarcane bagasse in sugar mills. This ash is available in large quantities in emerging countries such as Brazil, India, Thailand and Mexico, and its disposal in open dumps is causing different environmental issues. A number of researchers report that the SCBA from sugar mills needs a post-treatment such as recalcination, grinding, sieving or the combination of these methods in order to enhance its pozzolanic activity. After processing, up to 30% of SCBA can be used as a partial Portland cement replacement in composites. This replacement may cause microstructural changes in the cementitious matrix and the improvement of the mechanical properties in composites containing it. However, studies on the durability of such composites are required. This paper focuses on the performance of cement-based composites containing treated SCBA. The microstructural, mechanical and some durability properties of those composites are discussed. This literature review is useful to carry out further researches about the durability of reinforcement embedded in cement-based composites containing SCBA (SCBAC).","PeriodicalId":307663,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (ICCSTE'19)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115312025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"GIS-based Modeling of Debris Flow Runout Susceptibility in Kulekhani Watershed, Nepal","authors":"Bhuwani Paudel, M. Fall, B. Daneshfar","doi":"10.11159/ICCSTE19.140","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11159/ICCSTE19.140","url":null,"abstract":"Rainfall-induced landslide masses often change into disastrous debris flows and damage large areas in Nepal’s mountainous region. The area covered by debris flow inundation is a most essential component for landslide hazard assessments leading to development of land use plans for saving lives and property. Because debris flow is a complex natural phenomenon, runout analysis requires very detailed information and rigorous procedures. Various empirical and dynamic models are available for debris flow runout simulation. However, a simple and publicly accessible model that can provide reasonable results is the ideal option for engineers and scientists. The Flow-R model with various algorithms has the capability to analyze debris flow inundation with limited input information, and the model software is readily available in the public domain. In this research, the Flow-R model with user-defined landslidesusceptible areas for a single rainfall event (540 mm in 24 hours) was chosen for debris flow runout analysis in Kulekhani Watershed (Nepal). The results obtained from this modeling for the debris flow inundation area was 2.68% of the watershed. The result is comparable to previously observed debris flow area in the study watershed.","PeriodicalId":307663,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (ICCSTE'19)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126630098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
