In order to achieve that, designers have to go through an iterative trial and error process which takes a considerable amount of time and may result in overestimation at the bidding stage. In the case of bridge design, there are no such tables which hinders the preliminary assessment of project value and bid cost. As such, this paper outlines a research conducted to develop traffic load equations and tables based on the 2020 AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. By utilizing this method, engineers will save time in the design process, and reduce project bid cost by minimizing overdesigned and overestimated structural section sizes for project tender documents. In this research, moving load equations and tables were created based on single-lane bridge models for single span and two-span bridge configurations in SAP2000 software. Truck load arrangements, based on AASHTO LRFD design specifications, were applied and results obtained using moving load approach. Finally, the data generated from the parametric study was used to develop empirical expressions for design moment (MT) and shear (VT) for the use by bridge designers.","PeriodicalId":307663,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (ICCSTE'19)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114872034","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, an alternative approach, built up T stub has gained attention owing to its freedom of sizing and material use. The behaviour of built up T stub under monotonic [1, 2] and cyclic loading [3] have already been studied but response under blast loading is yet to be explored. Accordingly, Present study aims to evaluate the performance of built up T stub under blast load through finite element analysis.","PeriodicalId":307663,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (ICCSTE'19)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130824318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The vehicular delay is one of the most important parameters that is used to evaluate the performance of traffic light intersections, for this reason, professionals of transport use as traffic optimization judgment the decrease of delays This article presents an approach to evaluate the variation of delays through the time for urban intersections for which this investigation analyses the delays in one intersection for different stages. This project begins with a model of the intersection of study helped by the software Synchro 10. Then, the model will be applied for many stages where the vehicular volume will be increased depending the vehicular growth. Finally, it is proved that due to the estimated delays for each stage, it will be possible to estimate their own variations that is based on the trend of percentages variation curve on time delays. In brief, the methodology could be applied in different urban intersections and stages where it is pretended to propose solutions that are sustainable over the time.","PeriodicalId":307663,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (ICCSTE'19)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123978699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Obtaining these values from local practice is necessary to provide accurate assessment results that reflect real-life scenarios. The datasets for the recycling process of construction and demolition waste into recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) in the city of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates are currently unavailable. Accordingly, this research aims to determine a detailed environmental LCI dataset for the production of RCA in Abu Dhabi. An extensive investigation of the RCA production practice was performed to highlight the input and output of each process unit. The methodology proposed by the International Standards Organization (ISO) to build an LCI (ISO 14040) was adopted. The resulting environmental LCI value for RCA production was determined to be 6.67x10 kg CO2eq per kilogram of produced RCA. Research findings serve as a benchmark to evaluate the environmental sustainability of RCA and RCA-based products in a holistic LCA study, while also enriching the LCI of the city of Abu Dhabi.","PeriodicalId":307663,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (ICCSTE'19)","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116655262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The scaled model pile embedded in cohesionless sand is housed in a laminar shear box under 1g condition. Loads are applied with a horizontal actuator rigidly connected at the pile-head allowing only horizontal translation. The results show the significant effect of loading rate in bearing capacity of the lateral pile subjected to cyclic loading. Further, the variation of the lateral resistance of the pile are found to be linear function of logarithmic of the loading rate. However, no effect of loading rate appears in the bending moment, deflection and soil reaction profile along the pile depth, which indicates that soil near the pile show a consistent failure pattern despite a significant change in the loading velocity.","PeriodicalId":307663,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (ICCSTE'19)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126702636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The EGC was developed using powder based alkali activators and MgO was added as self-healing agent. Two types of source materials were used to produce EGC. One EGC mix had slag and class C fly ash as source materials and termed as binary mix. The other one had slag, class C fly ash and class F fly ash and termed as ternary mix. Setting time, slump flow, fresh density and rheology were measured as fresh properties of the developed geopolymer composites. As hardened properties, compressive and direct tensile strengths were evaluated. It was observed that addition of MgO delayed the setting time of both the EGC mixes. The rheology of the developed geopolymer mixes complemented the hardened properties of the mixes. It was found that binary geopolymer mix exhibited superior performance as compared to its ternary counterpart due to presence of class C fly ash only that ensured higher amount of CaO. It was also observed that EGC, developed in the present study, experienced strength values (both compressive and direct tensile) that are comparable to the values of the previous studies even with the addition of MgO. Moreover, strain hardening characteristic was observed for both EGC mixes under direct tension test. Hence, it is evident that the initial outcomes of the experimental investigation are quite promising and exhibit the importance of conducting further comprehensive studies in order to develop design guidelines for EGC with self-healing capability.","PeriodicalId":307663,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (ICCSTE'19)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129631689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Raphael","doi":"10.11159/ICCSTE19.183","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11159/ICCSTE19.183","url":null,"abstract":"One of the most important issues in civil engineering is the detection of structural damages affecting the system performance at an early stage in order to prevent any catastrophic results. Two main approaches are adopted for structure monitoring: (i) periodical inspections and (ii) permanent monitoring. However, when relying on inspection results only, damages occurring between two consecutive inspections can not be detected which can be dangerous depending on the severity of the damage. Hence, for cost effective results, it is often recommended to permanently monitor structures using sensors in order to have continuous information about every single element of the structure. Since the implementation of such instruments is costly, one must optimize their configuration, number and location wise, in order to maximize the probability of detecting damages with a limited number of sensors. This configuration can be optimized, furthermore, when monitoring similar structures having at least one property in common. Thus, in this paper, we propose a methodology that optimizes the configuration of sensors for several similar structures by a genetic algorithm, and uses the obtained data in order to update, accordingly, the elements’ properties (i.e. The rigidity, the Young modulus) for each structure through a hierarchical Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC). This methodology considers all uncertainties associated with the precision of the sensors results, the mechanical model and the degradation of the elements and takes advantage of the results obtained for any structure in order to update the information of all other similar structures which could save time, costs, and give more accurate results. A numerical application on two concrete frame structures is presented to illustrate the proposed methodology.","PeriodicalId":307663,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (ICCSTE'19)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127609634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The construction industries have ability to reuse or utilize different types of solid wastes. The waste from poultry farms in the form of eggshell also cause problems to the environment and need some utilization. The eggshell powder (ESP) is enriched with natural lime; therefore, it can be used for soil stabilization. In the present paper, eggshell powder was used along with sodium chloride (NaCl) and polypropylene fiber (PPF) to study their influence on physicochemical properties of soil. The soil samples were subjected to ten cycles of freeze-thaw before examining the pH of respective sample. Eggshell powder (3%, 6% and 9%), sodium chloride (2%, 4% and 6%) and polypropylene fiber (0.05%, 0.1% and 0.15%) were used and design of experiments was developed using Taguchi technique. Results showed that inclusion of these materials had significant effect on the pH and unconfined compressive strength of subjected soil against harsh environmental conditions, although the relation between pH and UCS was found non-linear.","PeriodicalId":307663,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (ICCSTE'19)","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115747648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gohnert","doi":"10.11159/ICCSTE19.170","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11159/ICCSTE19.170","url":null,"abstract":"The United Nations estimates that approximately 12% of the world’s population live in slums, which is about 860 million people. The use of the word “slums” infers that its occupants live in informal housing, or housing that does not comply with building codes and regulations, are inferior in construction and often present health hazards. Although every nation is inherently responsible to ensure that this basic need is met, usually finances and social prioritization are the inhibiting factors. In fact, the rate of increase in slums is exceeding population growth. The world is digressing. This paper is therefore an attempt to provide an alternative solution to the housing problem. A housing solution should be affordable, include sustainable building materials and optimize the structural shape. A prototype house is presented, which incorporates cement-stabilized earth blocks (CSEB) and blocks made from recycled building material. A typical pitched roof is also replaced with a catenary brick vault.","PeriodicalId":307663,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (ICCSTE'19)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130022428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
