Some measurements were performed under isothermal conditions, and others with a temperature gradient established across the sample thickness. Isochronal current density. was also measured as a function of temperature and field. The activation energy associated with the hopping transport of electrons through the sample volume was around 0.09 eV, whereas the activation energies deduced from the temperature dependence of the isochronal current density were in the range 0.60-1.40 eV, depending on the applied field strength and the impurity content of the samples. It was concluded that the isochronal current densities were controlled by electron injection from the cathode, the most likely injection mechanism being tunnelling between the Fermi level of the metallic electrode and acceptor sites within the dielectric close to the interface.","PeriodicalId":306575,"journal":{"name":"2003 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127099563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Analysis of samples aged in the bulk by Raman microprobe spectroscopy indicated that changes in the spectra are only observed when samples are subjected to high electrical stresses for long periods of time. Even then, no specific chemical effects were detected; degradation only manifested itself in the form of mild fluorescence. Corona-induced surface reactions were also examined. Although the surface texture was found to change radically, subsequent Raman analysis revealed few chemical changes in the polymer, implying that erosion involves fragmentation of the LDPE and the formation of volatile by-products. No residues were detected on the samples. In addition to the LDPE itself, the corona electrode was also analyzed. This revealed the presence of extensive deposits with the fingerprint of sp/sup 2/ hybridized carbon. The significance of these results are discussed with respect to high field ageing processes, particularly, the development of electrical trees.","PeriodicalId":306575,"journal":{"name":"2003 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127282019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Microsecond pulses above a certain threshold cause electroporation of the cell membrane while nanosecond pulses of higher voltage additionally porate the inner organelles. We used Time Domain Dielectric Spectroscopy to measure the conductivity of HL-60 (human leukemia) cell suspensions as a function of time after 10 ns, 78.5 kV/cm pulses and 50 /spl mu/s, 1.1 kV/cm pulses, which have the same energy. The conductivity increased immediately after the 50 /spl mu/s pulse, indicating that ion channels in the HL-60 membranes initially opened. However, the conductivity decreased immediately after the ultrashort pulse, indicating that ion channels initially closed. The conductivity decreases significantly approximately 40 minutes after both pulses. This suggests that not only do the pores or channels opened close, but pores or channels open in the membrane prior to the pulse may close as well. These measurements were an intermediate step in determining the electrical properties of HL-60 cells using a two-shell model. Once determined, these electrical parameters will be used in electroporation models developed at Old Dominion University.","PeriodicalId":306575,"journal":{"name":"2003 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"382 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129137103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There have been several studies on the application of wavelets to identify faults during impulse testing. Most of these studies have utilized simulated waveforms in which the fault is introduced by a suitable mathematical model. In this paper the authors have used a new technique to simulate such faults. Experimentally obtained waveforms are used to investigate the suitability of wavelets to detect faults during impulse testing and this paper presents preliminary results of this research work.","PeriodicalId":306575,"journal":{"name":"2003 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126937692","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A simple conduction model, based on dissociation and recombination processes, is assumed. In this study, the factors that affect the insulation deterioration from water droplets were analyzed by means of electric field calculation and some experiments. It is demonstrated that water droplets on the polymer surface locally enhance the electric field and may cause partial discharge. From the results of ageing test, when polymer loses its hydrophobicity with ageing time, water drops will elongate, coalesce, and extend with ellipsoidal shape in the direction of electric field, which results in peak value and higher harmonic component in the change curve of the maximum horizontal E-Field at the triple junction increasing remarkably. Simultaneously, increase tendency of the third harmonic wave component with time elapsing can be observed in leakage current waveform, which is in agreement with the results of electric field calculation.","PeriodicalId":306575,"journal":{"name":"2003 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116609524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The degradation at polymeric solid internal interface in cable splices is considered to be initiated by the partial discharge (PD) phenomena. This paper describes the partial discharge (PD) behavior of the developed specimen when a tungsten fine wire is introduced at the interface as a conductive foreign substance. Under the voltage application the maximum PD magnitude (Qmax) and PD number (n) decreased with time and PD tended to disappear. This phenomenon is not a swarming pulsive microdischarge one, since the PD inception voltage (Vi) increased with the voltage application time. When voltage application is stopped for a long time, Vi decreased to the initial value and the values of both Qmax and n recovered. The recovery of PD characteristic became faster when the pause of voltage application became shorter. The surface resistance between two tungsten wires installed at the interface decreased after suffering the PD and then recovered with the pause of voltage application with similar time variation of PD characteristic. These PD behaviors are to be related to the electric field relaxation at the tungsten wire tip.","PeriodicalId":306575,"journal":{"name":"2003 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114008662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
