The level of organization of a given political movement can easily determine their subsequent electoral performance. Not just in Hungary, but within the wider Central-Eastern-European region, accessing data on party membership, branch offices, etc., is extremely challenging, therefore concluding or discovering party organizational strength is a critical research area. In this study I am making a bold attempt to unveil the social embeddedness of the most important political parties from the 2014 general elections to the latest EP elections (2019), by using the polling station table-seater delegates` presence as an indicator of local party presence itself. I assume that, if a given party is not able to delegate a single person to a certain polling station, they have no operating organizations at the grassroots level, therefore it indicates their lack of localization and extensive network. With simple quantitative methodologies, I was also seeking the relationship between electoral performance and party organizational presence locally.","PeriodicalId":305418,"journal":{"name":"Földrajzi Közlemények","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126103269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Trianon és a brit földrajz II.

Surprisingly, however, almost no attention has been paid to the work of the various national geographical delegations which helped advise politicians as the boundaries of Europe were re-cast after World War I. This paper examines the work of the British geographical delegation in Paris as it advised upon Trianon. Particular attention is paid to the work of Alan Ogilvie, and to Ogilvie’s relationships with Isaiah Bowman, effective head of the American delegation. The paper examines Ogilvie’s diaries and correspondence to provide detailed insight into how ethnic identity, linguistic difference and other criteria were used (or not) to define and map the new Hungary and the new Europe. The paper shows how questions to do with the complexity of Hungary’s ethnic diversity were known to British geographers and map makers as early as 1915. It shows, too, that no single view was held over how to map boundaries: some British geographers favoured delimitation based upon physiographic divides, such as river and drainage basins. Others favoured ethnic difference based on use of the mother tongue. For yet others, attention was paid to lines of communication and to economic market area. Because such differences were apparent in the British geographical community during World War One, notably between prominent members of the Royal Geographical Society, British geographers offered no consistent view upon Hungary’s delimitation and ‘dismemberment’ following Trianon. British geographers turned to the meetings of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in order to debate these differences and to review Hungary’s position in the new Europe after 1920.","PeriodicalId":305418,"journal":{"name":"Földrajzi Közlemények","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127558530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These days, due to the ever-increasing competition among destinations both in domestic and international markets, this is the central issue in the development and management of destinations, especially where recreational and excursionist functions are dominant. The target area chosen can be found in the hinterland of a regional centre (Pécs), where, in addition to recreational functions, the repositioning efforts of the last ten years led to the more and more important role of sport tourism and supplementary tourism products like ecotourism, heritage tourism, and festival tourism. This versatility provides another challenge for the actors of the destination, as the main pillars of the renewal of the destination concern all actors in the destination (inhabitants, non-governmental organisations, service providers, and municipal self-government) in some way. During the research we thus also carried out a questionnaire survey with the local stakeholders (inhabitants and municipal self-government) and actors interested in tourism (holiday home owners, service providers), in addition to the processing of secondary data sources.","PeriodicalId":305418,"journal":{"name":"Földrajzi Közlemények","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122731352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study focused on the inhabitants’ attachment to the town, quality of life, internal image, and the locals’ satisfaction level with the settlement’s factors. The survey of Szentes fits with the aspirations of the 21st-century challenges of (small) rural towns (Veszprém, Kőszeg, Gyöngyös, Zirc). These challenges include retaining the young Y and Z generations and active population; liveable settlements; and sustainable rural development. During the research some local key determining figures were cross-examined in structured interviews. In addition, data were gathered applying a focus group method along with a survey reflecting 527 local respondents’ opinions. The results provide a brief summary not only of the areas in which Szentes can improve the inhabitants’ quality of life and the conditions of its settlements, but also of how it can be a more attractive place to live overall.","PeriodicalId":305418,"journal":{"name":"Földrajzi Közlemények","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133282670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study seeks to explore the potential of a disadvantaged area in the increasingly problematic world of overtourism, where significant and valuable attractions exist that meet the needs of many toursitic segments. In order to explore the situation of local tourism, we provide an inventory of attractions and a SWOT analysis, as well as results of empirical studies (an online questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews) in order to explore the opinion of different stakeholders on local tourism. Developing and expanding local tourist attractions, services, accommodations, and tourism marketing activities, primarily based on natural values, is essential to making tourism play a greater role in overcoming socio-economic problems in disadvantaged areas. Better utilization of tourism potential could open the door to sustainable slow tourism, which could contribute to making the Karancs-Medves area a real alternative to the country’s destinations threatened by overtourism.","PeriodicalId":305418,"journal":{"name":"Földrajzi Közlemények","volume":"34 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121038845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results are presented for the main age groups of the region, at five-year intervals, and broken down as follows: 18 cities, coastal villages (group of 39 settlements), and non-coastal villages (group of 123 settlements). The most recent research report on which this study is based was produced in 2017. For the two years since then, we can also identify deviations from previously forecasted processes. Using another method, we interrogate the reliability of the previous prediction. The population projection shows that the population of the resort area will fall to 184,000 by 2062, and the proportion of the population over the age of 65 will reach or even exceed 35%. In addition to the aging of the villages, the depopulation of dwarf villages further away from the coast poses a serious problem.","PeriodicalId":305418,"journal":{"name":"Földrajzi Közlemények","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114506220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on this, one of the general objectives of tourism is to decrease seasonality where the attractions of the destination are managed in order to increase tourism consumption in the non-preferred periods as well. The main objective of the present study and research is to analyse the tourism seasonality of Sopron, one of the most important cultural tourism destinations of Hungary with the help of the Gini-index. This analysis reveals the impacts of earlier developments, on the one hand, and can also serve as a basis for the future developments pointing out the necessary areas of intervention, on the other.","PeriodicalId":305418,"journal":{"name":"Földrajzi Közlemények","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129192374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition to its contribution to theory and academic literature, the formation and development of tourism geography have always been in symbiosis with the everyday practice of tourism, in particular in the service of planning, development, and regulation. Tourism geography focuses on the social, economic, and environmental issues of the interaction between the traveler (homo turisticus) and the destination, but the exploration of psychological changes has also become increasingly prominent in the last decade. The examination of the impact of tourism on the quality of life in Hungary was induced during the process of drafting the National Tourism Development Strategy 2005-2013, and the think tank established at that time enriched both theory and practice with valuable research results. This study reviews the impact of tourism on well-being, and then demonstrates how the theory can be transformed into planning practice through the process of designing the Austrian Tourism Strategy (Masterplan T) and the document itself, published in 2019.","PeriodicalId":305418,"journal":{"name":"Földrajzi Közlemények","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127394879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The presentation of the guest satisfaction measurement results of the Lenti Thermal Spa and Szent György Energy Park highlights the complex process of developing a health tourism product. Health tourism is one of the most significant areas of tourism specified by the National Tourism Development Strategy 2030. The guest satisfaction survey presented in this study played an important role in providing appropriate feedback from the guests for the large-scale developments that were planned. Furthermore, the result of it strengthened the management, and the owner of the spa that the planned modernization, renovation, and development projects foresees the creation of a unique and cost-efficient product mix that will be successful on the domestic market based on the objectives of the National Tourism Development Strategy 2030.","PeriodicalId":305418,"journal":{"name":"Földrajzi Közlemények","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132588120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This negative trend fits into a general decline in student numbers in Hungary since 2005. Therefore, our aim was to conduct a nationwide survey among Geography MSc and BSc graduates, in order to reveal employment opportunities, as well as their perceptions on the value of the knowledge and competences gained at the university. The online questionnaire was developed and launched by the representatives of all Hungarian higher education institutions involved in geography training, resulting in a sample size of 589 respondents. The survey confirmed that the jobs and occupations of graduates show an extraordinarily heterogeneous picture; only the domains of regional planning and education represent a substantial share, whereas a significant proportion of jobs are only loosely related to geography. Theoretical knowledge obtained at the university is predominantly utilised by the graduates remaining in the academic sphere and by those working in the field of education. Roughly half of the respondents are occupied in the private sector; they mainly benefit from practical and professional skills such as (geo)informatics, mapping, field experiences, report-making, and teamwork. Accordingly, for those who are not willing to become teachers or researchers, further strengthening of these skills seems to be a fundamental task in Geography as a discipline of higher education. In addition, reforming ‘training and outcome requirements’ (KKK) in a way to make curricula more flexible and, where appropriate, to enable tailor-made specialisation should be important aspects of the planned improvement of education as well.","PeriodicalId":305418,"journal":{"name":"Földrajzi Közlemények","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133676880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
