Degraded frequency selectivity of the ear, due to increase in spectral masking along the cochlear partition, results in degraded speech perception. Splitting the speech signal by filtering it with a filter bank and adding signals from alternate bands for presenting to the two ears is likely to reduce the effect of spectral masking and thus help in improving speech intelligibility. The dichotically presented signals are perceptually combined in the higher levels of auditory processes. We have carried out experimental evaluation of this scheme, using critical band filters, in off-line and real-time processing of speech signals. The scheme resulted in improving speech quality, response time, recognition scores, and transmission of consonantal features, particularly the place, indicating usefulness of the scheme for better reception of spectral characteristics. The signal processing for improving the auditory perception by persons with moderate sensorineural hearing loss may be integrated as a part of the multimedia system.","PeriodicalId":302569,"journal":{"name":"ISSPA '99. The video signal output from a camera is put into a computer image gathering card to get the lump coals original picture in the coalface. After pretreatment and edge enhancement, the computer recognizes the lump coal and calculates its size. Finally, we count the data, display and print the result. Using this method, we effectively improve the quality of raw coal on a comprehensive mechanized coalface.","PeriodicalId":302569,"journal":{"name":"ISSPA '99. A modified Zak (1972) transformation is defined with the help of which Gabor's signal expansion and the Gabor transform can be brought into product forms that are identical to the ones that are well known for the rectangular sampling geometry. The shear operation on the lattice is associated with an operation on the synthesis and the analysis window, consisting of a multiplication by a quadratic-phase function. Following this procedure, the well-known biorthogonality condition for the window functions in the rectangular sampling geometry can be directly translated to the quincunx case.","PeriodicalId":302569,"journal":{"name":"ISSPA '99. Microphones pick up a signal of the desired speaker together with contributions of other speakers and loudspeakers in these applications. The contributions of these loudspeaker signals to the microphone signals need to be cancelled. The remaining signals are then separated so that the individual local speakers are recovered. In this paper an extension of the previously introduced convolutive blind signal separation algorithm, CoBliSS is presented. This extended algorithm is capable of performing combined blind signal separation and acoustical echo cancelling at a low computational cost. The performance of the extended CoBliSS algorithm is evaluated using audio that is recorded in a real acoustical environment.","PeriodicalId":302569,"journal":{"name":"ISSPA '99. Multi-step ahead predictions were made on the traffic intensity of digital video sources coded with an MPEG coder (hybrid motion compensation/differential pulse code modulation/discrete cosine transform method). Although current coding standards recommend constant bit rate (CBR) output by means of a smoothing buffer, the method inherently produces variable bit rate (VBR) output, and VBR transmission is necessary for high quality delivery. Prediction results described in this paper have been obtained using a fuzzy logic prediction scheme, and the conventional linear autoregressive (AR) algorithm. Prediction errors are analysed with low order statistical parameters and hypothesis tests. The proposed fuzzy prediction methods offer higher accuracy and can be applied to the development of usage parameter control (UPC), connection admission control (CAC) and congestion control algorithms in ATM networks.","PeriodicalId":302569,"journal":{"name":"ISSPA '99.
