To enhance the antibacterial characteristics of this material in our works, we developed a new method of TiO2Np doping with silver nanoparticles (Ag 0 Np), whose biocidal properties are well defined. The obtained products, Ag 0 Np/TiO2Np, in the form of suspensions and powders were characterized from chemical, physical and antimicrobial activity point of view. In addition, a mechanism of Ag + ions reduction reaction to Ag 0 Np has been proposed. The developed method of the Ag 0 Np/TiO2Np synthesis consists of the in situ chemical deposition of the Ag 0 Np on the dispersed TiO2Np in the form of anatase, using aqueous solutions of poly(acrylic acid sodium salt) (PAS) and NaBH4. The Ag 0 Np synthesis was carried out both in the presence and absence of TiO2Np. The chemical composition of Ag 0 Np/TiO2Np was assessed by atomic absorption spectrometrical method (AAS). The physical properties were evaluated as follows: crystallite structure and dimensions of nanopowders by X-ray diffraction method (XRD), UV-Vis absorption of colloidal suspensions and UV-Vis reflectance of nanopowders by spectrophotometrical method, grain size distribution of nanoparticles by dynamic light scattering method (DLS), stability of colloidal suspensions by zeta potential measurements, forms and shapes of Ag 0 Np and Ag 0 Np/TiO2Np by transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) respectively. The antimicrobial activity was tested by standard methods against some broad spectra of fungi and bacteria. In suspensions, the concentration of TiO2Np was 1 wt. % and the concentration of Ag 0 Np varied in the range of 0.005…0.15 wt. %. The Ag 0 Np suspensions and Ag 0 Np/TiO2Np suspensions were stable from the physical and chemical point of view. The physical characterization test results were in accordance, proving the achievement of colloidal solutions containing Ag 0 Np and TiO2Np spherical nanocrystallite with average diameters of 4.1 nm and 7.8 nm, respectively. The results of the biological tests showed the high fungistatic and antibacterial activities of both products in form of colloidal suspensions and powders. The developed \"one pot method\" is efficient, ecological and easy to be scaled-up. The obtained products have biological activity but it depends on the nature of the tested germs, lowering in the series: Gram negative bacteria, Gram positive bacteria and fungi. Also, a synergistic action was proved at destroying of Trichoderma viride fungus, which was not obtained either for Ag 0 Np or for TiO2Np, independently.","PeriodicalId":302199,"journal":{"name":"The Open Chemical and Biomedical Methods Journal","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128795937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This porphyrin was synthesized by a multicomponent Adler- Longo type reaction using two different substituted aldehydes, and next characterized by HPLC, TLC, MS, UV-vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, AFM, 1 H-NMR and 13 C-NMR analysis. The observed changes in UV-vis and emission spectra were also discussed in terms of various pH conditions. The series of novel porphyrin-silica nanomaterials have been prepared by using silica matrices obtained in two variable sol-gel processes, i.e. via the one step acid- or two steps acid- base-catalyzed hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethylorthosilicate. Especially, the hybrid monolithic glass nanomaterials obtained here via the one step acid-sol-gel procedure exhibited a high intensity of the emission spectra bands and, besides, a very sharp bathochromic shift in the red region towards 723 nm, thus making also these nanoparticles as the valuable source of potential second generation photosensitizers. In the atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements this hybrid nanomaterials displayed the spherical and highly monodispersed particles of ultra low size (less than 70 nm and with an average height of 20 nm), controlled shape, high porosity, and superior stability as the potential water-insoluble photosensitizers.","PeriodicalId":302199,"journal":{"name":"The Open Chemical and Biomedical Methods Journal","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122830227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nanotechnology has a significant impact in drug delivery, genomics, bioengineering, energy storage, electronics etc. The azobenzene-based polymers are one of the most interesting classes of external stimuli sensitive materials due to azo- chromophores trans-cis reversible photoisomerization capacity. This work presents a study of the photochromic behavior of a siloxanic main-chain polymer containing different azo-benzene groups in the side-chain and the correlations with the surface properties modification, using the contact angle method. As a function of the azobenzenic group dipole-moment value and substitution degree, the contact angle method is capable, or not, to evidence the surface properties modifications. The capacity to generate nano-structured surfaces in the case of azo-polysiloxanic films was demonstrated. The polymer chemical structure and the UV irradiation conditions allow controlling the relief topology. As an additional investigation method, molecular modeling studies were effectuated, in order to calculate the azobenzenic groups' dipole- moment values and the supramolecular organization at the film surface.","PeriodicalId":302199,"journal":{"name":"The Open Chemical and Biomedical Methods Journal","volume":"117 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129305431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The gel was obtained at the room temperature in sterile conditions, in a reactor with stirring facilities and a cushion of nitrogen purified by traces of oxygen, with several different silver (Ag 0 ) concentrations (10.907, 15.96, 31.92, 39.5, respectively) and 56.88 ppm Ag-NPs ppm for the anti-germs tests, while for the treatment of a dermatosis of unknown etiology we used the gel with the smallest silver concentration. For the gel with the highest metallic silver concentration of 56.88 ppm, after 48 hours at 37 o C, no one of the germs E. coli, S. aureus or C. albicans resisted. Candida albicans fungus showed an increased sensitivity to metallic silver, as it was eradicated after only 24 h. Probably, in the biological processes Ag 0 -cell, the poly(hydroxy urethane-acrylate), also intervenes, as this might facilitate the accumulation of nanometric silver on the extracellular matrix (ECM). Thus, the microorganism might accumulate faster the amount of silver, which stops its vital functions, such as the permeability and breathe. The developed gel with the smallest silver concentration, of 10.907 ppm Ag-NPs, lead to very good results in the treatment of a dermatosis of unknown etiology, after 78 days of treatment.","PeriodicalId":302199,"journal":{"name":"The Open Chemical and Biomedical Methods Journal","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124709412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Measurement of facial parameters is often needed for rhinoplastic, dental and aesthetic surgical procedures. By measuring parameters of crucial importance, the surgeon can evaluate the condition of the patient. Measurement of parameters before and after surgery also provides a way of assesing results of the surgery. The measure- ment process is not difficult but tedious due to accuracy requirements. The software tool presented in this study can be used to work with patients' photo files and provides a way of measuring popular facial parameters easily and accurately. The paper describes how the software tool should be used for measuring facial parameters correctly. The tool is developed in Java to make it portable over different platforms and can be used to export patient's measurements to a spreadsheet or database automatically.
