In particular the organisation and the graduality of linguistic teaching, according to the traditional subdivision in language for basic communication and language for academic and professional communication, is seen as a limit for the courses. In this essay some language education strategies are introduced to allow Italian learners to communicate proficiently in university and professional contexts in foreign countries. This proposal concerns an examination of French and Spanish language courses at the Politecnico di Torino, for Bachelor and Master degrees in Engineering of Industrial Production. Nevertheless, learners might find it difficult to select what is more effective for their learning process and be daunted by some complex features of naturally occurring language. This paper draws on previous studies and personal teaching experience to suggest that, in order to fully exploit these resources, language centres should aim at helping learners increase their ability in dealing with online authentic materials inside and outside the centre’s premises. The first was a third-year workshop for trainee primary school teachers, the second a first-year module on a degree course in social work. Both of these courses might be said to bridge the rather ill-defined boundaries between CLIL and ESP, as in both cases language is taught through content and content through language. This cross-curricular focus disrupts the traditional verticalist hierarchy of the teacher-pupil relationship, since the course participants frequently have content-based knowledge and experience in which the “teacher” is lacking. University language centres can play a fundamental role in helping the academic staff from feeling pushed towards teaching through English without a great deal of training and preparation. After providing a description of the activity performed, we will discuss its positive outcomes for educating pupils in and through plurilinguism and cultural diversity. The workshop will ultimately prove to be an opportunity for both teachers and pupils to appreciate and highlight the linguistic richness of their class, while satisfying their appetite for foreign languages. In this respect, research regarding the teaching of Arabic is relatively lacking. Moreover, in recent years Arabic has been changing rapidly, strongly influenced by the social networks. The most evident result of this is the emergence of Web-Arabic, which can be regarded as a lingua franca in online communication. Although characterized by a prevalent use of Standard Arabic, it is also marked by recourse to colloquialisms and dialectal features. The present study illustrates how a group of Italian teachers of Arabic participating in teacher education courses were introduced to the teaching of language variation through the analysis of Web-Arabic as Lingua Franca (WALF). All the three works have a relevant connection to the main topic. The paper focuses on the strategies each author employs in the dramatization of the economy and looks at their conclusions on the nature of the economic crisis. I first illustrate the reason of this specific kind of approach to the subject in the introduction; then, I analyse each play individually in the three following sections. I conclude by underlining how the interest in socio-economic structures in relation to present times remains very central in the two English plays but seems to be almost absent in the Italian play. One of the most striking feature of the black British poet is his irony, which functions as an effective revolutionary act as it subtly reveals hypocrisies and prejudices. Benjamin Zephaniah’s subversive use of language is aimed at opening the boundaries of the literary canon and of the very idea of Britishness, in the same way as postcolonial authors do. Being himself a ‘product’ of cultural hybridisation, Benjamin Zephaniah creates a syncretic network of intermingled voices and personae , a sort of polyphony in Bakhtinian terms.
