Lewis himself openly acknowledged his admiration for and indebtedness to Masefield’s work, and the influence of the earlier novel is clearly evident on several occasions in the Chronicles. However, certain key differences in the two authors’ handling of similar themes and motifs reveal fundamental divergences in their attitudes to childhood and their vision of the function of children’s literature.","PeriodicalId":302041,"journal":{"name":"Linguæ & - Rivista di lingue e culture moderne","volume":"208 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116512678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The work Rural Walks depicts the mother figure as an educational mentor who nurtures and directs the growth of her young girls and as a heroine of daily life. Smith wants to give her female readers a revolutionary version of motherhood, for women are the primary recipients of Mrs. Woodfield’s lessons. While focusing on the mental and moral development of young women, she also attends to her own social and moral responsibilities. Her educational program is comprehensive of unusual fields of knowledge and addresses social issues. In her children’s books Smith instructs her female readers how to apply the social lessons of her literature to their experiences in the real world and how to become politically active citizens. In Rural Walks the dialogues illustrate the overlapping theories on the formation of the self and the education of the woman.","PeriodicalId":302041,"journal":{"name":"Linguæ & - Rivista di lingue e culture moderne","volume":"15 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130588969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It argues that what started as the noble attempts to compensate for the grievous history of racism by way of inclusive speech and affirmative action has, in the end, generated new forms of discrimination and closure. In this context, instead of pushing the boundaries of what is considered acceptable in social, moral or aesthetic terms, art is itself being pushed back within these boundaries and rendered inert and ingratiating.","PeriodicalId":302041,"journal":{"name":"Linguæ & - Rivista di lingue e culture moderne","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133294233","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Rhythms, alliterations, the use of anaphora and onomatopoeia, and the variations of register in Dombey and Son constitute the most visible and ‘audible’ examples of the relationship between language and soundscape, as I explain in the first part of my work. Later, I explore how, in Dombey and Son, Dickens surprises and displaces the reader by using internal deviation and omitting the normally expected clues of context and coherence. I analyse these linguistic and stylistic aspects in the chapters that refer to the railway boom and the sounds of trains and ringing bells that accompany the troubled misadventures of one of the novel’s main characters.","PeriodicalId":302041,"journal":{"name":"Linguæ & - Rivista di lingue e culture moderne","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122477370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While many universities now offer linguistic and methodological training to the lecturers involved, it is essential that adequate training is also made available to non-academic staff. In 2015 the University of Padova Language Centre was asked to train administrative staff who deal with international visitors and students, many of whom lack effective communication skills in the local language. The language teachers involved find themselves in a new role, with challenges that differ from those associated with teaching students. This paper discusses how the specific language learning needs of university administrative staff are met by highly qualified and experienced university language teachers. It examines participant feedback and suggests training solutions that could enhance communication within an increasingly international academic community.","PeriodicalId":302041,"journal":{"name":"Linguæ & - Rivista di lingue e culture moderne","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123688237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The CLIL project is coordinated by the language center in agreement with Ufficio Scolastico Regionale USR and the Ministry of Education MIUR. Such initiative gave the opportunity to open the language center to the local community and to use its research and teaching knowledge to meet societal needs and fulfil the university’s “third mission”. The aim of this paper is to show the experience of CLIL teacher training courses focusing on the crucial aspects of plurilingualism, interculturality, creativity and internationalization. The strengths of CLIL methodology has been highlighted as well as the emerging profile of Italian CLIL teachers. Finally, the outcomes encouraged an innovative teaching method and helped CLIL teachers to adopt a student-centered teaching style. Obviously, the transition to the new style implies a lot of extra time to get used to this completely different approach.","PeriodicalId":302041,"journal":{"name":"Linguæ & - Rivista di lingue e culture moderne","volume":"365 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125827100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, it has created ad-hoc teacher education programmes for subject teachers to learn to teach their subject in a foreign language using CLIL methodology. This revolutionary step has involved the University Language Centres in the teacher education and it has generated the publication of a large quantity of teaching material (TM) for all school subjects, as well as academic research in this field. It is relevant both for the teacher trainer and for the subject teacher to develop a critical perspective of the TM available. Thus, this article aims to examine the published TM currently available on the market from a methodological viewpoint. The material analysed and the methodology applied here were used in teacher education programmes for future CLIL teachers in which the author of this paper was involved as a teacher trainer of the University of Cagliari Language Centre. Certain critical aspects of language learning, such as comprehensible input and adherence to the 4Cs (communication cognition, content, and culture) of the CLIL methodology framework were carefully considered in the study.","PeriodicalId":302041,"journal":{"name":"Linguæ & - Rivista di lingue e culture moderne","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127910064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the Web 2.0 society the virtual spaces of e-learning provide support for, and empowerment of, autonomous learning traditionally carried out individually in Self-Access Language Centres. Autonomous language learning is now enriched by cooperative activities in virtual communities of learning through forums, wikis and chats without limits either of space or of time. The present paper takes a critical look at an L2 autonomous learning pathway undertaken online by Chinese exchange students in a “virtual self-access”. This learning model proved to be engaging and motivating and facilitated the students’ first approach to autonomous learning.","PeriodicalId":302041,"journal":{"name":"Linguæ & - Rivista di lingue e culture moderne","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125368922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
