The study was a cross-sectional descriptive chart, conducted at the Jos Central prisons on eighty-six (86) older prisoners between June 2012 to December 2012. Bio-demographic data and history of any chronic medical condition as well as that of psychiatric condition were also obtained from their clinical records in the clinic located within the prison. Depression was assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) on all the volunteers 50 years and above. The GDS measures cognitive, affective, functional state and a factor that reflects helplessness and fear for the future. The study was largely composed of male making up to 99%. The age range was between 50 to 75 years with a mean 54.36 (SD 3.24) with most of them between 50 to 60 years (90%). A quarter (25%) had not received any form of education while 7 out of 10 had received some form of education. Majority of them were employed (skilled or un-skilled employment) before incarceration. Only 2% were unemployed before their incarceration. Those incarcerated for violent crimes (65%) nearly doubled those in prison for non-violent crimes 35%. Occupational status, pre-existing medical conditions and the perception of their health status before incarceration were found to be statistically significant. Type of crimes committed was not statistically significant. Known chronic medical condition(s) was a risk factor in the inmates developing depression (P-value =0.009). In comparing the specific medical conditions with depression, significant findings were found (P-value= 0.003). The study revealed a prevalence of depression at 59% in older prisoners of 50 years and above. The significant predictors of depression include occupational status, pre-exisitng medical conditions, and the perception of their health status before incarceration were found to be statistically significant.","PeriodicalId":301476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of BioMedical Research and Clinical Practice","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125433977","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They may be due to underlying pathologies such as slipped disc, low back pain, TB spine, paraplegia, spinal tumour, degenerative disc disease, lumbosacral spondylosis, cord compression syndrome, traumatic spinal cord injury, caudaequina or fractures of any part of the vertebrae below T12 down to the gluteal fold. Degenerative disc disease, lumbar spondylosis, degenerative disc disease and exit nerve root compression are common findings in the MRI scan of patients with lumbosacral conditions. The MRI scan of patients with lumbosacral conditions seen between 2016 and 2017 were evaluated for the study. The features assessed were degenerative disc diseases, lumbar spondylosis, degenerative disc disease with exit nerve root compression, spinal cord contusion/injury, Pott's disease and lumbar spondylolisthesis. myelitis, lumbar spondylosis with degenerative disc disease, as well as lumbar fracture were also assessed. A total of 233 patients with lumbosacral pathologies were included in this study. There were 132 (56.7%) males and 101 (43.3%) females. Of all the patients with radiculopathies, patients with low back pain as the major indication constituted 23.2%, followed by those with lumbosacral spondylosis (19.3%), paraplegia (15.5%) and slipped disc (13.7%), while patients with caudaequina and spinal tumour represented 2.6% and 1.7% respectively. Degenerative disc disease was the most common finding representing 38.2% patients, followed by lumbar spondylosis (14.6%) and degenerative disc disease with exit nerve root compression (14.2%). Lumbar fracture was the least common finding in 1.3% of patients with lumbosacral conditions. MRI can be used to identify pathologies of lumbosacral tissues in a non-invasive manner. There was a high prevalence of radiculopathies in the lumbosacral spine of patients.","PeriodicalId":301476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of BioMedical Research and Clinical Practice","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131930349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hand hygiene is the cornerstone of infection prevention (IP). When optimally performed, hand hygiene reduces healthcare-associated infections (HAI), spread and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Poor compliance with hand hygiene practices remains a challenge for IP practitioners all over the world. More than 250 foodborne diseases are caused by bacteria or parasites. This study was conducted using a descriptive cross-sectional study of 138 respondents in Wadata market. Peer-reviewed and pilot tested questionnaires were employed. The questionnaires were classified into four sections namely-socio - demographic characteristics, knowledge on hand hygiene, attitude towards food hygiene and hygiene practices. Data analysis was done using Epi info a software package for statistical analysis version 23. Majority (40.6%) of the respondents were between the ages of 21-30 years. There were more females (80.6%) food vendors than males. Over 65% of the respondents had education above secondary school; and most of them obtained information on hand hygiene from mass media. Over 62% could define hand hygiene correctly while more than 90% had positive attitude towards hand hygiene. The practice level of the respondents of hand hygiene in this study was poor 42.7%. There was significant association between educational status and knowledge of hand hygiene (p<0.05). Overall knowledge of hand hygiene of the respondents was good and they had positive attitude towards hand hygiene but this did not strictly translate to good practices of hand hygiene.","PeriodicalId":301476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of BioMedical Research and Clinical Practice","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124211746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study objective was to compare the knowledge, attitude and acceptance of cervical cancer screening among female health Personnel and non- health Personnel in Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH). JUTH. This was a across-sectional study conducted in JUTH between 15th June and 31st July, 2008. There was significant difference in knowledge between the health personnel 288(91.4%) and non-health personnel 145(36.2%) p value < 0.01. Most (73.7%) of the health personnel had correct knowledge about pap smear as a screening procedure for cervical cancer. Doctors had the highest correct knowledge of 97.5%. Only 64(16.0%) of the non-health personnel had correct knowledge about pap smear. Teachers and those attending Gynaecological clinics had the highest correct knowledge of 45.0% and 24.0% respectively. There was significant difference in the overall rate of screening between the health personnel 75(23.8%) and the non-health personnel 44(11.0%). Out of the respondents that had knowledge about pap smear 42(29.0%) of the 145 non-health personnel and 75(26.0%) of the 288 health personnel had screened with no significant difference between the two groups. The two groups had similar reasons why those that were yet to screen had not screened. About 81.3 % of the health personnel and 87.1% of non-health personnel who were yet to screen would like to be screened. The Eye theatre register was retrospectively reviewed. Data on children who had DES from 1st January 2008-31st December 2017 was retrieved. These included biodata; clinical presentation, diagnosis, indication and type of surgery, and outcome of management. The total number of paediatric ophthalmic surgeries within the study period was computed. The data were entered into Epi Info statistical software, version 3.4 for analysis. Descriptive and analytical statistics were applied, p-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. A total of 634 ophthalmic surgeries were performed on children within the study period, 50(7.9%) eyes of 49 children had destructive eye surgeries. Thirty-three (67.3%) were males and 16(32.7%) were females; M:F ratio was 2.1:1. The mean age was 6.7±5.0 years with a range of 1.7-11.7years (Mean±SD). Most, 27(55.1%) of the participants had evisceration, 15(30.6%) had enucleation while 7(14.3%) had exenteration. More males, 24(72.7%) had evisceration while more females 10(62.5%) had enucleation (Fisher’s exact test=13.8, p=0.001). The main indications for DES included tumour in 22(44%) eyes, trauma to eyes in 13(26%) and intractable infections in 8(16%) eyes. All the 15 eyes enucleated were confirmed cases of retinoblastoma. Seven (14.3%) persons had orbital exenteration of which 6(85.7%) were retinoblastoma. In all, 42(84%) destructive eye surgeries in this study were avoidable. Micro-RNA 466i up regulates the expression of interleukin-10 and may contribute to the pathogenesis of the complications in SCA. We sought to investigate the relationship between changes in the level of micro-RNA 466i and the frequency of vaso-occlusive complications in SCA patients. Red blood cells were lysed using ammonium chloride. The resulting white blood cell pellets were lysed in guanidiumisothiocyanate (GITC) lyses buffer. From the GITC lysate, total RNA was extracted. Thereafter, the amount of micro-RNA 466i was quantified. There were no relationships between microRNA 466i and the frequency of complications in SCA patients. This is often reflected in delayed presentations, frequent relapse and non-treatment, with dire consequences on affected individuals, family, and society. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pattern of presentation and diagnoses of psychiatric illness among attendees of a psychiatric facility in a tertiary hospital in North-Central Nigeria. This was a descriptive, explorative, cross-sectional study. A pro forma was designed to obtain information about patients’ socio-demographic variables, diagnoses, duration of untreated illness, GAF Score and other clinical data, from case files, spanning over a three year period. A total of 720 case files were analyzed with 54% of the patients being male. Only 66(9.2%) comprised of children and adolescents with 83% making up the adult population and 7.5% being elderly (60 years and above). While 129(17.9%) were employed (government and self), most (88%) of the patients reside within the state. Only 12.2% were clinically stable at 6 months follow-up assessment even though most (79.3%) of the patients had absconded at 6months follow-up. Mean duration of untreated illness was 117.5 weeks (SD±226.3) (approximately 2.3years) with Psychotic disorders predominating 355(41.8%). Only 13.4% were diagnosed with depression and 0.6 % mental retardation. Mean GAF score at presentation was 43.23(SD±14.87), a reflection of illness severity at presentation. Mental illness is a common occurrence, however, the majority of patients only present when symptoms become severe or when patients become disruptive. Mental disorders of childhood and old age are particularly underrepresented, underscoring the need for more public enlightenment programs that are geared towards detection, early presentation, treatment and stigma reduction.","PeriodicalId":301476,"journal":{"name":"Journal of BioMedical Research and Clinical Practice","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127880595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These groups of patients are often considered high-risk, as they are prone to complications from seeking alternative healthcare services, which might be detrimental to their health. The objective was to determine the characteristics of patients signing against medical advice and the subspecialty with the highest prevalence of patients leaving the hospital against medical advice. A quantitative cross-sectional study design was chosen to accomplish the objectives of the study. A retrospective study was carried out in the Accident & Emergency Department (A & ED) of Federal Medical Center, Owerri (FMCO), to determine the characteristics of this distinct group of patients who left the hospital against medical advice. A review of the records of all patients who left against medical advice between 1st of August 2012 and 31st of July 2014 was done. There were 137 DAMA cases during the study period. The mean age of the DAMA study group was 32.3 years +/- 15.9. The major subspecialty involved was Orthopedics and Trauma with 51.8% (n = 71). The modal age group was between 21 – 30 years with 41.6% (n = 57) while 77.4% were males. In conclusion younger males with orthopedics and trauma cases were the most involved in DAMA and so this group of patients should be counseled as soon as they arrive the Accident and Emergency Department.
