For many practical purposes the required operation of the controllers in maintaining the healthy power system becomes a vital part. After performing power and frequency control within the permissible limit, a better appreciation of the operation of power systems can be obtained. It is extremely necessary that the output of the machines at any instant will be exactly equal to the load plus transmission and distribution losses on the system. If the output is higher than the demand, the machines will tend to accelerate and the frequency will rise, and vice versa. Hence the frequency is not a constant quantity, but continuously varies. These variations are normally small and have no noticeable effect on most consumers. The frequency is continuously monitored against standard time-sources and when long-term tendencies to rise or fall of frequency is noticed, the control engineers take appropriate action to regulate the generators' outputs. A continuous time transfer function model of the system for studying dynamic response for small load disturbances is presented here. A proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller based automatic generation control scheme is applied. There are different algorithms to find out the optimum parameters of a controller like Genetic algorithm, Particle swarm optimization (PSO), Backtracking search algorithm (BSA) etc. However, in this project work, BSA is employed to find optimum settings of PID controller constants for a two area power system network. Results obtained using BSA has been compared with those obtained using PSO.","PeriodicalId":301088,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Energy, Power and Environment: Towards Sustainable Growth (ICEPE)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122660715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This topology of the inverter is realized with asymmetrical configuration. The purpose of going for more number of voltage levels is to obtain less distortion and DC component in the output voltages. A combination of unipolar Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and comparison of sinusoidal modulating wave with DC component at fundamental frequency has been implemented for switching of power electronics devices. A Fuel-Cell generation systems is used as a source for this three-phase inverter for interfacing it to the grid. It is observed that the integrated inverter with grid satisfies all the grid requirements such as phase angle, frequency and amplitude of grid voltage. In addition to this the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the output voltages of the inverter are within the specified limits of IEEE 519 standard. Matlab/Simulink environment is used for the modeling and switching of three-phase multi-level inverter.","PeriodicalId":301088,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Energy, Power and Environment: Towards Sustainable Growth (ICEPE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129813683","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model of the system is designed using an industry level modelling software Ansys Maxwell. The model designed is a horizontal axis one and the philosophy behind the design principle is that of a passive magnetic bearing system. The model indicates two rotor bodies whose axis of rotation is the horizontal axis. Stator body in a discontinuous fashion surrounds the rotor body. The rotor and stator are both permanent magnets and the material chosen for their modelling purpose is NdFeB (Neodymium Magnets, an alloy containing the elements Neodymium, Iron, and Boron (Nd-Fe-B)). The simulated operational characteristics reveal that the system is unstable along the horizontal axis or the axis of rotation. To overcome the problem a simulation based PID control stability analysis is also been proposed with necessary justification.","PeriodicalId":301088,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Energy, Power and Environment: Towards Sustainable Growth (ICEPE)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130037570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All the areas are equipped with single stage of reheat turbines and appropriate generation rate constraints (GRC). The performances of the proposed 2-DOF-PIDD controller are compared with the commonly used classical controllers such as I, PI and PID controller to assess the best supplementary controller for LFC. Selection of the optimum parameter of the several controllers and speed regulation (R) parameters are done by a new metaheuristic optimization algorithm called Cuckoo Search algorithm (CSA). The main advantage associated with CSA is that it has only two controllable parameters that make the algorithm less complex and thus potentially more generic. Numerous simulation results clearly show that proposed controller guarantees better performance over others in terms of settling time, peak overshoots and reduced oscillations. Further, robustness of CSA optimized 2-DOF-PIDD controller is tested against different position of perturbation. Proposed 2-DOF-PIDD controller also provides better performances when subjected to higher degree of perturbation.","PeriodicalId":301088,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Energy, Power and Environment: Towards Sustainable Growth (ICEPE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129945871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sources of EMI may be natural sources, like atmospheric charge/discharge phenomena and extraterrestrial radiation, or may be man-made sources, like power lines, auto ignition, radio frequency interference, and radiation hazards etc. As important components, direct current (DC-DC) converters are embedded and employed in various electrical devices, thus forming main sources of EMI. Some measures, such as filters and electromagnetic shielding, have been taken to suppress EMI, but these methods have various drawbacks with respect to cost, volume, weight, and efficiency. Therefore, new theories and methodologies are desired to cope with the EMI problem. Spread Spectrum Technique or chaos control is an important method due to the continuous spectrum feature. This paper describe two methods to implement the Spread Spectrum Technique in a Boost Converter. An analogue chaotic carrier is designed to be embedded in a chaotic pulse width modulation (PWM) boost converter, and to be used for reducing electromagnetic interference (EMI) in dc-dc converters. Simulations study is conducted to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed analogue chaotic PWM in reducing EMI. Randomized carrier frequency modulation with fixed duty ratio (RCFMFD) Spread Spectrum scheme for pulse width modulation (PWM) boost converter, is implemented using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology. The simulations and experimental verification is done, so as to prove the effectiveness of Spread Spectrum scheme in reducing the electromagnetic interference (EMI) in dc-dc converters.","PeriodicalId":301088,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Energy, Power and Environment: Towards Sustainable Growth (ICEPE)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126077745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
