Cladding removed portions of a multimode fiber act as sensor which works on evanescent wave interaction principle. The sensing principle is based on intensity of light which is disturbed by the change in proximity of air or oil to the sensor. The phenomena of refraction, total internal reflection are taken into account for experimentation and verifications. The intensity of light is detected and analyzed by using light dependent resistor (LDR) and LabView respectively at the detecting end which provides the corresponding reading for the level of transformer oil in which the optical fiber is immersed. Besides the magnetically coupled float operated conventional level indicator this sensor has many advantages which includes electromagnetic interference resistance, low temperature influence, intrinsically safety, low cost and simple design. A reference fiber is introduced in parallel with the sensing fiber to eliminate the intensity variation of source light and temperature variation of the transformer oil. The optical sensor used is well suited for real time monitoring of transformer oil in power transformer.","PeriodicalId":301088,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Energy, Power and Environment: Towards Sustainable Growth (ICEPE)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134370957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dynamic equations of the system are done by using Lumped parameter method. Quasi-SMC is used for chattering elimination which is present in the case of normal-SMC. Lyapunov stability theory is used to achieve the stability of sliding surface. Since, SMC is insensitive to parameter uncertainties and disturbances within some bounds; it helps in tracking the desired trajectories and controlling the dynamics. Tip deflection and hub angle are controlled using SMC with payload variation of 0.0Kg, 0.1Kg, and 0.5Kg. To demonstrate the results, MATLAB simulations are used for the proposed control approaches.","PeriodicalId":301088,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Energy, Power and Environment: Towards Sustainable Growth (ICEPE)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133994410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A damping controller is universally adopted to reduce the low frequency of oscillation in a power system. Finding the controller parameters is considered to be an optimization problem. The estimation of optimum values for a damping controller requires strong and efficient optimization methods. A hybrid algorithm which combines the concept of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) termed as hybrid PSOGSA (hPSO-GSA) is used to tune the parameters of the FACT based damping controller. The objective of this algorithm is to integrate the exploitation property of PSO with the exploration property of GSA. The main focus here is, how the system stability can be improved by the optimal settings of the variables of a damping controller that can be obtained by using the hybrid algorithm. In this proposed work, the comparison of the hPSO-GSA algorithm with the GSA and PSO algorithm for the design of UPFC based damping controller is also carried out. The simulation results presented here concludes that the controller design using the proposed hPSO-GSA provides better solutions as compared to other methods.","PeriodicalId":301088,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Energy, Power and Environment: Towards Sustainable Growth (ICEPE)","volume":"86 22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116608595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The battery ESS is characterized by high energy density, low power density, degradation due to frequent and partial charge/discharge cycles. By incorporating supercapacitor ESS which possesses high charge/discharge rates, a system having high energy and power capabilities can be designed. In the proposed control scheme, high frequency current reference in addition with battery error current is used as the reference for the SC ESS resulting in a better voltage profile as compared to that of the traditional methods. Also, a state of charge (SOC) controller is employed to maintain the SOC within the desired limits. When the SOC limit is violated, battery SOC is controlled by diverting charge/discharge currents to SC. The system results in overall life span improvement, reduction in size and cost of the battery. The control scheme is verified using Matlab/Simulink models under varying conditions of irradiation and load.","PeriodicalId":301088,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Energy, Power and Environment: Towards Sustainable Growth (ICEPE)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124994971","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It presents the implementation of both intelligent and nonlinear control in a highly open loop unstable nonlinear system. Instead of fuzzy PID controller, PD+I controller is implemented for both the fuzzy controller for avoiding problem of integral windup. A robust SMC is designed without transforming into the canonical form. Important control problem i.e. tracking of ball position of magnetic ball levitation system (Maglev), which is very difficult to control, is done on the practical platform and the performances of all the controllers are compared. Simulation is performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of control strategies. Simulation result reveals that control schemes are working satisfactorily. This leads to the turbine generator shaft failure and electrical instability at oscillation frequencies lower than the normal system frequency. In this paper a fuzzy logic control (FLC) is proposed for static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) for damping the oscillations caused by SSR. The performance of the controller has been analysed using IEEE benchmark model to study the sub-synchronous resonance characteristics and to mitigate the problems caused by the SSR using a FLC along with FACTS device (here SSSC is used).
