Tepavcevic","doi":"10.11567/MET.33.1.3","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11567/MET.33.1.3","url":null,"abstract":"This paper explores the relationship between migration, entrepreneurship, and foreign direct investments by focusing on entrepreneurial activities of post-Soviet (im)migrants in Hungary in periods between 1991 and 2016. Post-Soviet migrants are in focus because between 1956 and 1989 the Soviet Union coercively kept Hungary in the Socialist bloc. Based on surveys and in-depth interviews, this paper reveals that there are considerable differences in patterns of entrepreneurship among post-Soviet immigrant entrepreneurs depending mostly on time of their arrival to Hungary. Similarly, motives for entrepreneurship among the first-wave migrants combine negative factors in the former Soviet Union with positive factors encountered in Hungary, while factors in Hungary recognized as positive by most post-Soviets prevail in motives for later waves of post-Soviet migration and entrepreneurship in Hungary. The paper also demonstrates that many relatively small investments have been conducted since 2000 by citizens of post-Soviet countries to Hungary. Some of them are transforming into an entrepreneurial activity, serving also as a basis for immigration to Hungary. U nedostatku kohortnih podataka o unutarnjoj migraciji primjenom metoda tablice doživljenja omogucena je procjena cjeloživotne prostorne pokretljivosti stanovnistva. Ishod je ocekivana migracija, odnosno prosjecni ocekivani broj preseljenja za pojedinca tijekom njegova životnog vijeka (uz uvažavanje djelovanja mortaliteta). Za izracun ocekivane migracije upotrijebljeni su popisni podaci o stanovnistvu koje je promijenilo mjesto stanovanja od 1. travnja 2010. do 31. ožujka 2011. Rezultati provedene analize pokazuju sljedece: žene u Hrvatskoj prostorno su pokretljivije od muskaraca, a to vrijedi i kad se u obzir uzmu spolne razlike u mortalitetu ; ocekivana migracija s dobi postupno pada, no distribucija preseljenja neujednacena je tijekom životnoga ciklusa. Najveca sklonost unutarnjoj mobilnosti bilježi se, nimalo iznenađujuce, kod mladoga odraslog stanovnistva, sto potvrđuju i procjene modelskoga dobnog profila unutarnjih migranata u Hrvatskoj. Vrhunac intenziteta unutarnje migracije javlja se tijekom dvadesetih godina života. Istovremeno, unutarnja mobilnost stanovnistva u Hrvatskoj komparativno je jako niska, sto se, između ostaloga, može pripisati nacinu rjesavanja stambenoga pitanja, ekonomskim i drustvenim prilikama. Pri interpretaciji istraživackih nalaza izloženih u ovome radu valja imati na umu da se ocekivana migracija temelji na presjecnim podacima i iskustvu sinteticke kohorte. Rijec je o pokazatelju koji se odnosi na prosjecne vrijednosti, zbog cega može prikrivati važne informacije o varijacijama u migracijskome ponasanju. Čačič-Kumpes","doi":"10.11567/MET.31.3.4","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11567/MET.31.3.4","url":null,"abstract":"Through reviewing different and often opposing views on the relationship between Islam and the West, the paper aims to offer a better understanding of this relationship, and of Islamophobia as an old yet increasingly actual and in many respects relevant social problem. A short historical overview of the understanding of the relationship between Islam and the West, and various definitions of Islamophobia, are followed by examination of some recent works that from different perspectives deal with the issue. Firstly, is given insight into the works written by Western theorists who describe the relationship between Islam and the West within the framework of the idea of the clash of civilizations while, at the same time, labeling Islam often as a non-modern religion and culture whose members reject Western values such as democracy, freedom and gender equality. In contrast to them are introduced the authors whose argumentation opposes stereotypical views of Islam; among them are also those that critically address Islamophobia in today's Western society, either by presenting results of their research on Islamophobia or by documenting the dominant media image of Islam, which has been perpetuating stereotypes, especially in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on New York in 2001. Lastly, it is concluded that, regardless of the origin of works dealing with the relationship between Islam and the West or of the type of their arguments, they more often than not interpret Islam and the West primarily as two separate, self-contained and in itself incompatible worlds. In doing so, the authors here argue, they employ an essentialist and reductionist approach not only to Islam – as it might be assumed – but also to the West, while the relationship between Islam and the West is simplified and schematized. Paralelno s povecanjem broja izbjeglica koje pokusavaju uci na teritorij EU-a poostravaju se mjere za upravljanje migracijama, a pravo na azil na razini država clanica sve se restriktivnije tumaci. Traženje zastite od proganjanja postaje razlogom za zatvaranje granica i onemogucivanje pristupa teritoriju i sustavu azila. No pristup sustavu azila prvi je korak u ostvarivanju prava na azil kako je ono zajamceno međunarodnim, europskim i nacionalnim pravom. Osim omogucivanja pristupa teritoriju i sustavu azila koji implicira obvezu država na prihvacanje izbjeglica kako bi se u pravicnom i ucinkovitom postupku utvrdila potreba za međunarodnom zastitom, države su dužne postovati nacelo zabrane vracanja (non-refoulement). Razjasnjavanje povezanosti omogucivanja pristupa sustavu azila i zastite nacela zabrane vracanja svrha je ovog rada. Analiza u radu izvedena je pravnodogmatskom metodom istraživanja i tumacenja pravnih akata i drugih izvora prava te relevantnih preporuka i dokumenata UNHCR-a. Polazi se od pretpostavke da se bez omogucivanja pristupa teritoriju i sustavu azila ne može postovati nacelo zabrane vracanja. Osim iz međunarodnoga izbjeglickog prava i doktrinarnih tumacenja to proizlazi i iz prakse Europskog suda za ljudska prava u pogledu zabrane mucenja ili drugoga necovjecnog postupanja ili kažnjavanja zajamcene Konvencijom za zastitu ljudskih prava i temeljnih sloboda. Jovanić","doi":"10.11567/MET.31.2.4","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11567/MET.31.2.4","url":null,"abstract":"In this article the authors deal with the changes in the ethnic structure of Karlovac and Lika-Senj counties in the period from 1991 to 2011 and analyse the factors influencing these changes. Special attention is given to the two most represented ethnic groups in Croatia – the Croats and the Serbs. Analysing the census data the authors emphasize that the most significant changes have been registered in the first analysed inter-census period from 1991 to 2001 what is ascribed to emigration, the Croatian War of Independence, population ageing and changes in the population census methodology. According to the population census from 1991 both counties recorded the majority of residents of Croatian ethnicity, while the population of Serbian ethnic group represented the most numerous national minority counting significant proportion of 25.4% in Karlovac and 36.4% in Lika-Senj County. The 2001 population census recorded national homogenization in the ethnic structure of both counties determined by the domination of Croats (counting around 85% in both counties). The data gathered by the most recent 2011 population census have not brought any significant changes in relation to the previous ones in Karlovac County, while in some parts of Lika-Senj County they registered a significant change associated with the return of the Croatian citizens of Serbian ethnicity.
