Stochastic graphs which span a set of extracted image features can be constructed to yield consistent estimators of Jensen's entropy difference for between pairs of images. Unlike traditional plug-in entropy estimates based on density estimation, stochastic graph methods provide direct estimates of these quantities. We review the stochastic graph approach to entropy estimation, compare convergence rates to that of plug-in estimators, and discuss a geo-registration application.","PeriodicalId":291827,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2001 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. As a basis for the indexing, a novel K-Means segmentation algorithm is used, modified so as to take into account the coherence of the regions. A new color distance is also defined for this algorithm. Based on the extracted regions, characteristic features are estimated using color, texture and shape information. An important and unique aspect of the algorithm is that, in the context of similarity-based querying, the user is allowed to view the internal representation of the submitted image and the query results. Experimental results demonstrate the performance of the algorithm. The development of an intelligent image content-based search engine for the World-Wide Web is also presented, as a direct application of the presented algorithm.","PeriodicalId":291827,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2001 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. The research leading to this paper focused on this problem, i.e. efficiency and scalability. A novel representation of color histograms is presented. The introduced model is based on hierarchical image adaptive color histograms. One important aspect of the envisaged hierarchic definition is that details at various levels of scale can be obtained. For fast search of similar features in large databases large sets of non-similar images are discriminated at very low computational cost using low detailed descriptions. The search is then progressively refined until only a few very similar objects or images are found and ranked using higher levels of detail. To assess the performance of the approach several experiments have been conducted. Selected results are reported.","PeriodicalId":291827,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2001 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. We present the interpolated Mth band filters as the interpolation filters. The interpolated Mth band filters are obtained from the cubic spline interpolation of a prototype M/sub p/th band eigenfilter. The proposed filter can be calculated in real time, eliminating the need for a large on-chip memory. Scaled images using the proposed filters show superb image quality.","PeriodicalId":291827,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2001 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. We explore the potential of heteroassociative MNN (HMNN) for a practical task, such as that of robust scene recognition. Scene recognition could be of use for self-localization in a vision-based navigation framework for mobile robots. HMNN have a big potential for real time application because its recall process is very fast. We present some experimental results that illustrate our ideas.","PeriodicalId":291827,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2001 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. Traditional image compression has been designed to provide maximum perceived visual quality, and a direct application is sub-optimal for depth-map compression, since depth-maps are not directly viewed. In other words, the sensitivity of the rendering error depends on the image content as well as on the depth map, we propose two improvements to take this into account. Firstly, we consider region-of-interest (ROI) coding, where we identify those regions of the image where accurate depth is most crucial. Secondly, we reshape the dynamic range of the depth map. Our experiments show a significant improvement in coding gain (1.1 dB) and rendering quality when we integrated these two improvements into a standard JPEG-2000 coder.","PeriodicalId":291827,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2001 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. This model is built from a training set on which a principal component analysis (PCA) is applied. A local system of reference is computed for each sample shape of the learning set, which enables to align the training set. PCA then reveals the main modes of deformation of the class of objects of interest. Furthermore, the deformation field obtained between a given shape and a reference shape is extended to a local neighborhood of these shapes by using an interpolation based on the thin-plate splines. It is then used to register objects associated with these shapes in a local and non-linear way. The data involved here are cerebral data, both anatomical (cortical sulci) and functional (MEG dipoles).","PeriodicalId":291827,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2001 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. The results are applied to navigation and manipulation in a virtual environment. We choose a human face and hands as tracking targets for HCI. To extract the area of face and hands in a complex background, we transform an input color image using the GSCD (generalized skin color distribution). Based on the transformed image, we detect the area of face and hands by WUPC. Furthermore, the face and hands candidate region are estimated by a Kalman filter in the following frame. Then we can extract the depth information about the only corresponding region, respectively, by stereo matching. Finally, we can navigate and manipulate objects based on the extracted 3D information of face and hands naturally in the virtual environment without any additional device.","PeriodicalId":291827,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2001 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. Currently, the relevance feedback approach has attracted great attention since it can bridge the gap between low-level features and the semantics of images. We propose a new relevance feedback technique, which uses the normal mixture model for the high-level similarity metric of the user's intention and estimates the unknown parameters from the user's feedback. Our approach is based on a novel hybrid algorithm where the criterion for the selection of the display image set is evolved from the most informative to the most probable as the retrieval process progresses. Experiments on the Corel image set show that the proposed algorithm outperforms MindReader at the semantics based search.","PeriodicalId":291827,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2001 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat. We present a simple backward adaptive classification scheme to separate the image source into three classes: smooth regions, text regions and image regions. Different probability models are assigned within each class to maximize the compression performance. We also extend our scheme to exploit the interplane dependency for coding color images. The segmentation results of the reference color plane are used as the contexts for the classification and coding of the current color plane. Our new lossless coder significantly outperforms current state-of-the-art coders such as CALIC and JPEG-LS for compound images with modest computational complexity.","PeriodicalId":291827,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2001 International Conference on Image Processing (Cat.
