In a majority of schools, the nature of the design studio pedagogy and the way that other courses are taught appear as two systems. Courses 'supporting studio' have been very much a teacher-centered didactic exercise, traditionally delivered in lectures. Understanding this background, this study examined the success of teaching technical courses such as construction technology by adapting different strategies mediated through a Web-based approach. This paper reports the findings of the study funded by The University of Hong Kong and the Universities Grants Commission of Hong Kong.","PeriodicalId":291817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2004. This toolkit is the result of a student's project at the University of Duisburg-Essen in collaboration with a local secondary school. Our approach uses PDAs in a wireless network to build an environment which emulates sending of short messages with mobile phones. The messages created by the students are collected in a database and establish a base for a discussion and analysis later on using Cool Modes, a graph based modeling and discussion system.","PeriodicalId":291817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2004. Ontologies play a pivotal role in authoring a SCORM-compliant learning objects, where they will provide an outline of precisely defined terms that can be communicated across teachers by visualized presentations. The outlines of teaching materials likely rely on conceptual models in the form of ontologies that open the way to move from learning object oriented view to a content framework oriented view in terms of authoring teaching materials. OBCE has an easy to use interface on the Web and allows teachers to exploit the full power of learning objects such as SCO or SCA (shared content object or asset). It provides functionalities to support outline design of learning materials more dynamically. The result of this study is that teachers can easily edit their outlines of learning materials on CRMS in terms of dynamic construction that fitting their teaching context or students' needs. Finally, the implications of this study for education are also included.","PeriodicalId":291817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2004. In this paper, we propose a schema-driven methodology to design a general learning management system supporting XML and Web-services technologies. This system is driven and controlled by schema processors, which provide the ability for users to freely generate and manage learning procedures such as replace learning activities. In addition, it can interact with legacy systems. We represent the procedures of controlling learning activities through schema management, such as dynamically establishing and allocating the main directories (e.g. the learning activity directory) from the central databases (e.g. the learning activity database) to a user in terms of his/her roles, sub-roles and requirements. This system can greatly improve the capabilities of existing learning management systems.","PeriodicalId":291817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2004. For Web-based electronic learning systems it is an indispensable feature, if we want to provide systems that meet the needs of the learners. In this article, we show how specifications of e-learning systems can be personalized to different learner profiles. For this we describe course outline(s) by directed graphs called outline graphs. Then we discuss several techniques for tailoring the graph according to the needs defined by a learner profile.","PeriodicalId":291817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2004. In this paper, the word 'design' refers to the organizational structures of learning communities thus our scope is the design of social processes. In particular, the focus is on the opportunities for professional development for the participating teacher. However, our main aim is to display how two different on-line projects can be compared by applying a model of design that derives from the theoretical framework of communities of practice by Etienne Wenger. Our research shows that Wenger's model provides a useful metalanguage that facilitates analyses of different learning communities.","PeriodicalId":291817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2004. Instructional Planning Assistant SyStem (IPASS) assists teachers in creating an instructional plan and arranging learning materials for learning activities on the instructional plan. In a wireless technology enhanced classroom (WiTEC), it is important to provide an easy method for resource and class management server (RCMS) to obtain the instructional plan. This investigation defines an instructional plan meta-data to describe the instructional plans, activities, and materials. Additionally, the specifications of an instructional plan package (IPP), which contains the meta-data and physical learning materials files, are presented.","PeriodicalId":291817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2004. The system trains the subject on sets, or \"lessons\", of paired associates in a cue/response format. The sequence in which items are presented can vary according to a particular algorithm, and/or to the particular subject's ongoing performance. The system was used to study the acquisition of Japanese vocabulary in English speakers with no prior experience of Japanese. A two-way ANOVA indicated that there were significant effects on retention at test of lesson number, and of the algorithms controlling the order and selection of items at acquisition, and that there was no interaction between these factors. In this paper, we consider the implications of these results for vocabulary instruction, and discuss how our system could be used to facilitate the study of other factors influencing learning and memory.","PeriodicalId":291817,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, 2004.
