Allergic asthma is the most common phenotype in childhood. Definition of allergic asthma is typically based on presence or absence of atopy. In asthma, platelets have been found to actively participate in airway inflammation. The aim of this study is to evaluate levels of platelet indices in atopic and non-atopic asthmatic patients and to investigate the usefulness as a marker for the detection of atopy. Patients with asthma between January 2014 and January 2015 were retrospectively screened. 142 patients who fit for inclusion exclusion criteria enrolled into the study. Patients were grouped according to the skin prick test. The results of a complete blood count, serum total Ig E results were obtained from the laboratory information system. The percentage of eosinophils, total Ig E levels, platelet distribution width; was significantly higher in the group with atopic asthma (respectively p=","PeriodicalId":290827,"journal":{"name":"Gaziantep Medical Journal","volume":"142 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115799571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Symptoms occur in the third and fourth decade of life and manifest as involuntary choreiform movements, ataxia, and progressive mental deterioration. Only a few case reports have been published describing the anesthetic management of patients with HC. Patients are at greater risk for some intraoperative complications (e.g., regurgitation and pulmonary aspiration), poor respiratory function, prolonged response to succinylcholine and thiopental, increased sensitivity to midazolam, and postoperative shivering leading to rigid spasms. All these factors make an ideal anesthesiological management necessary for this group of patients to guarantee an absolute airway protection during all the anesthesia and a fast and safe recovery. To the best of our knowledge, epidural anesthesia in HC patients has not been reported in the literature. Herein, we present our successful experience using epidural anesthesia in a HC patient.","PeriodicalId":290827,"journal":{"name":"Gaziantep Medical Journal","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134113769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Renal pathology such as nephrotic syndrome has been found to be associated with Kimuras disease which states a common etiopathogenesis between renal lesion and Kimuras disease. We present an eleven years old Malay boy with recurrent nephrotic syndrome presented with left post auricular swelling. This study included 30 healthy Wistar albino rats, each weighing 250-300 gr. Following cecal-ileal abrasion to rats in each group, the following treatments were applied: Group 1 (control, n:10) 5 ml saline irrigation; Group 2 (n:10) 5 ml 4% icodextrin solution; Group 3 (n:10) 3 ml auto-crosslinked hyaluronic acid gel. After 14 days, following a second operation, adhesion intensity scoring, histopathological assessment (inflammation, fibrosis) and costs were compared between groups. The lowest postoperative adhesion intensity score was found in the group 3 and the highest score was found in the group 1 (p=0.028). Group 3 had a non-significantly lower adhesion intensity score than group 2 (p>0.05). In terms of inflammation and fibrosis, group 2 had the lowest score, but there were no significant differences between all the groups (p>0.05). In terms of cost, 4% icodextrin is less expensive than hyaluronic acid. The results demonstrated that both hyaluronic acid and 4% icodextrin are similarly effective in reducing postoperative intraabdominal adhesions. In addition, 4% icodextrin is more cost-effective, which can be an advantage for clinical studies.","PeriodicalId":290827,"journal":{"name":"Gaziantep Medical Journal","volume":"602 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132755170","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Findings of disease are with fever, myalgia, chills, headache, vomiting and hemorrhagic manifestations. Infection is transmitted to humans by tick bite or by close contact with freshly slaughtered meat or blood from viremic animals. Since the tests of virus load consume much time, we preferred to study whether the findings obtained from anamnesis and physical exams of patients would be beneficial in predicting the clinical courses of patients. Files of 13 cases, who admitted to our clinic in the years 2006-2007 with the complaint of tick bite, were examined in this study. Anamnesis, physical and laboratory findings were recorded. Eleven of the cases were male. The age average was found to be 8.4 years (3-15). The period of first reference to our clinic was 3.4 days (1-8) on average. Bite size were 0.7 mm (0.4-1.4). The biggest bite was related to an adult tick. While serologic tests from the cases were found to be negative in twelve cases (92.3%), CCHF Immunoglobulin M taken on the third day was positive in one case (7.7%).This case was the one with biggest bite. In conclusion, the severity of the findings of CCHF is in correspondence with the size of virus load transferred. According to this study findings, size of tick and tick bite may be informative about the virus load and indirectly about the clinical outcome. Recording these findings for the future cases would be advised.","PeriodicalId":290827,"journal":{"name":"Gaziantep Medical Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133189684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We presented a 55 year old patient with complaint of cough. She had palpable supraclavicular and cervical lymph nodes. Thorax CT revealed multiple conglomerated mediastinal lymph nodes. Multiple swollen mucosal nodularities were observed on bilateral endobronchial area during fiberoptic bronchoscopy. Although acidfast bacilli were negative in bronchial lavage fluid, biopsies obtained from the endobronchial nodules revealed caseous granulomatous inflammation compatible with tuberculosis. Improvement was achieved one month following antituberculosis therapy. However, recent investigations have shed a light on this condition. According to the severity of the disease, the result may be regurgitation or rarely stenosis of the mitral valve. In addition to the local effects, mitral annular calcification is considered as a surrogate for systemic inflammation, widespread calcifications and cardiovascular risk factors. Treatment is considered when calcification is severe enough to cause hemodynamic effects or is suspected to be a source of systemic embolization. Different surgical techniques are employed according to the localization and severity of the calcium deposition, the function of the valves and overall patient condition.","PeriodicalId":290827,"journal":{"name":"Gaziantep Medical Journal","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124162150","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 35 patients who were treated for sepsis in hospital were included in the study. Chronic renal failure, hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, known history of diabetes and patients with heart failure were excluded from the study. Cystatin-C, pro-BNP, procalcitonin and CRP levels were measured besides the routine biochemical examinations. Patients were divided into two groups according to their in hospital outcome in terms of mortality. There was no statistically significant difference in patients age, CRP, cystatin-C, pro-BNP, procalcitonin, BUN, creatinine, leukocyte count, hemoglobin and platelet count according to the etiology of sepsis. However there was a significant difference in mortality rate between pneumonia and cholangitis groups with the others. Cystatin-C (p=0.031) and pro-BNP (p=0.023) levels were significantly higher in mortality group when both groups were compared. Increase of cystatin-C and pro-BNP levels were detected in elderly patients with sepsis or septic shock. The cystatin-C and pro-BNP levels can be used as an indicator of early mortality in these patients.","PeriodicalId":290827,"journal":{"name":"Gaziantep Medical Journal","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124075582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
