It utilizes the Hilali Epic as an example of travel narratives. It discusses how the translator can reproduce the situational dimensions of the source text in the target text. {"title":"The Semantics of the Nominative and the Accusative Experiencer in Arabic","authors":"Hanan A. Ebaid","doi":"10.21608/ejlt.2015.224640","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21608/ejlt.2015.224640","url":null,"abstract":"The present paper is concerned with highlighting the importance and significance of the semantic-syntactic interface for the expression and interpretation of linguistic structures. This interface is represented by the correlation of role archetypes like agent, patient and experiencer and grammatical relations like subject and direct object. This study is conducted within the framework of Langacker’s model of cognitive grammar theory which asserts the indispensability of this interface for any satisfactory analysis of linguistic constructions. This functional approach is intended to be reactionary to formal approaches which advocate the autonomy of syntax from semantics. Thus in formal theories, some syntactic issues like grammatical relations are identified and characterised with no reference to semantic considerations. By contrast, cognitive grammar regards grammatical relations and syntactic aspects like case markers as notionally grounded. Thus their identity and description follow the cognitive psychology principle of figure/ground organization. Thus the subject usually corresponds to an entity that is the focus of attention or the most important participant in a certain structure while the direct object specifies a less prominent participant. This is due to the fact that the direct object usually represents an entity that is affected by the entity specified by the subject. A second objective of this study is to emphasize the crucial and pivotal role of construal for the semantic and syntactic structure of linguistic expressions. Construal simply means the expression of a situation in alternate ways for specific purposes. The use of this principle results in the choice of some elements or entities of a situation as more salient than others. These salient entities are assigned specific role archetypes and grammatical relations that are conformed to the construal of a situation. Thus in We find that the experiencer role, specified by the NP Ahmed in both sentences, receives the nominative case marking in 1 and the accusative in 2. It is also noticed that the semantic features of the verbs in 1 and 2 are dissimilar. This is ascribed to the fact that the conceptual organization of the elements in each situation determines the syntactic aspects in linguistic constructions such as case endings and verb form. {"title":"Problems of Translating the Anthropomorphic Images of Istwâ’, the Face and the Eye in the Qur’ân into English","authors":"Hassan Ahmed El Sayed","doi":"10.21608/ejlt.2015.224633","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21608/ejlt.2015.224633","url":null,"abstract":"The current study is set to investigate the problems that face translators in rendering the anthropomorphic images of the Face, the Eye and Istwâ’ of Allah in the Qur’ân. The anthropomorphic images are the physical movements and body organs used to refer to Allah in the Qur’ân and sunnah. The samples of the study are 14 images from the Qur’ân. The problem lies in the fact that two divergent Islamic trends differ in dealing with the anthropomorphic images. The Salafî trend affirms them without interpretation, likening, resembling, exaggeration, or denying. The other trend is the Khalafî who contradicts the Salafî. Seven translations are investigated in the study in order to have a broad scope of the problem and hence provide in-depth results. The study is qualitative and begins with a theoretical part followed by the analysis section. The study findings show that the anthropomorphic images aroused much argument and to solve this problem, there is an opinion that allows Ta’wîl (interpretation) when it accords with language, context, and jurisprudence. The study also finds that the image of Istwâ’ is not liable to interpretation or imagination for any reason, and hence must be translated literally or in transliteration with explaining the theological reasons behind that in the footnotes. On the other hand, the images of the face and the eye can be interpreted according to the contextual meaning with affirming that Allah has a face and eyes. This translation is achieved through semantic, rather than literal, interpretation. The slang items translated are often populated by the Egyptian media, cinema and literature. Thus, the article is considered a comparative overview of modern Egyptian artistic works, and how their discourse has been affected by socio-political background of Egypt today. Slang appears to be associated with the culture in which it is created, so I found it would be irrelevant ( as well as difficult for a non-native speaker of English who is not used to English culture and habits) to transfer the Egyptian-Arabic words and expressions into culturally-based English slang; rather they have been translated into standard ( formal or informal) English. The fears this article addresses are fear of the unknown and the unfamiliar, including fear of technical vocabulary and neologisms, fear of idioms and metaphors, fear of ambiguity, fear of mistranslation and of written texts, fear of mechanics, and fear of rhythm and rhyme. The article does not offer a panacea for any of these basic fears. A comparison is made between 14 Shakespearean sonnets and two of their Arabic translations: one by Badr Tawfeeq and the other by Gabra Ibrahim Gabra. An attempt is made to identify and categorize the metaphors that are used in the original poems. This is followed by examining the procedures employed by the translators in rendering the metaphors into Arabic.
