It also gives portraits of key players up until 1990. Kaseko does not deviate all that much from such other African music styles such as highlife from Ghana and soukous from Congo, which in turn have been influenced by calypso, samba, and Cuban music. \u0000\u0000One explanation of the world kaseko is that it is a corruption of ‘kase le corp’, Patois for ‘break the body’ (Patois is the creolized French spoken in neighboring French Guiana). In general, dance music in that country—and in the Lawa region of eastern Suriname—is also referred to as kaseko. A third possibility is that the word derives from the African language (presumably Ashanti) ‘kaiso’, which means both ‘shake’ and ‘bravo’. Ketwaru","doi":"10.2307/j.ctv20hcrm0.9","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2307/j.ctv20hcrm0.9","url":null,"abstract":"Surinamese of East Indian descent, arrived in the late 19th century from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in northern India, which is also the origin of Surinamese East Indian music, alternately referred to as Sarnami-Hindustani music. It arose in a country of several different ethnic groups. This means emotions and musical patterns of other population groups can be heard in it. The sitar and tabla are often used across the entire spectrum of the world of Surinamese music. An example is the interplay of tabla, the Creole apinti drum, and congas.\u0000\u0000This chapter discusses the instruments and Indian musical styles in Suriname such as Baithak gana, developed especially by a second generation of Surinamese Hindustanis. Musicians sit on the ground and make use of simple texts and a sober musical accompaniment, which usually consists of harmonium, dholak, and dandtaal. Gamelan, steel gamelan, terbangen, and kroncong were the main types of Javanese music that developed in Suriname. Due to a lack of brass, scrapped iron from abandoned railway ties were used to make the pans, and a lack of experienced gamelan musicians made for drastically reduced ensembles of five people. Gamelan in Suriname also came under the influence of the nearby Caribbean music, especially by steel bands from Trinidad. Islamic religious songs were accompanied by a terbangen ensemble, consisting of kinds of tambourines and large drum called bedug, Surinamese kroncong ensembles mostly use three or more acoustic guitars, a ukulele (sometimes a banjo), a double bass (or bass guitar), and a cello. Jazz and swing got their niche alongside other more traditional native music and European classical and ‘light’ entertainment music. Many Surinamers were inspired by jazz from the United States. A few of them founded their own jazz bands. This chapter deals with the rise and reception of Surinamese jazz musicians in The Netherlands from the 1930s through to the 1970s. \u0000\u0000“It cannot be a coincidence,” wrote Herman ‘Doctor Jazz’ Openneer, “that Surinamese jazz began in The Netherlands in 1935.” The fee people like Armstrong commanded for a performance was much too high for many promotors in those days. Someone soon came up with the idea of offering Surinamers contracts and giving them American names. From then on Theodoor Kantoor was known as Teddy Cotton, and Arthur Parisius became Kid Dynamite. The Dutch believed that all blacks who played jazz were American.
