It has been developed and applied to monitor the harbor-related environmental impacts (primarily spreading of suspended particulate matter and oil spills) in the Estonian coastal sea. Besides the traditional in situ monitoring methods, the system incorporates operational modeling and remote sensing. Application and validation of the system is demonstrated in two particular coastal areas - Muuga Bay and Pakri Bay.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132182178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It makes a lot of problems: beginning from financial damage to impacts on wildlife or loses of aesthetic view. Various clean-up technologies are used for recovering oil spills. Dispersion is one of them. Dispersive measures (dispersants) - are substances that break oil slick into small droplets. Though modern dispersants are less toxic for environment than oil, however, they can cause danger to organisms. These pollutants (the dispersants and the oil) can affect live organisms synergetically with bigger harm if they work separated. So, the necessity of the real assessment of the environmental condition determines near direct (physical and chemical) methods to use such methods that are based on responsive reactions of the organisms to the pollution factors. The influence of oil and the dispersing agents “Simple green”, “Hydro Break Plus”, “Degradoilas”, “BR” and “BEC 400” on organisms in fresh (test - organisms Daphnia magna and Thamnocephalus platyurus) and the Baltic sea (test - organism Artemia salina) water determined using TOXKIT microbiotests. LC50's was calculated to compare the toxicity of these pollutants. The LC50 of petroleum hydrocarbons and the dispersing agents “Simple green”, “Hydro Break Plus”, “Degradoilas”, “BR” and “BEC 400” on water organisms are different though there is no doubt about their toxicity.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"363 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133463259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Remote sensors on satellites and aircraft offer cost-effective means for determining the rates and causes of ecosystem changes. The U. D. Center for Remote Sensing has been developing remote sensing techniques for observing changes of landscape-level, coastal environmental indicators, including wetland size, biomass, fragmentation; invasive species; riparian buffers; estuarine suspended sediment and chlorophyll concentrations. One particularly useful result is a method for detecting changes of wetland and upland vegetation using biomass as an indicator. By employing a vegetation index (MSAVI) which is locally normalized, we minimize the effects of atmospheric, weather and seasonal differences between images in a time series. This model is applied to a time-series of medium resolution (30 m) Landsat/TM images in a GIS to identify and “flag” areas where significant change has occurred. Only the “flagged” areas are then examined in more detail with more expensive high-resolution (1-4 m) IKONOS satellite or aerial imagery.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"467 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117289737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea and other Harmful Algal Blooms represent extreme events in aquatic ecosystems for which specially adapted ocean colour interpretation algorithms are needed. Here, an algorithm, developed for the Baltic Sea waters, derives information from MERIS satellite data on chlorophyll-like pigments, suspended particulates and dissolved organic matters. The presentation comprises demonstrations and intercomparisons of a local Baltic Sea algorithm and a global MERIS interpretation algorithm for the summer bloom events 2003.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132007750","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main sources of the pollution in the south-eastern part of the Baltic Sea are the effluent of industrial and domestic waste water and polluted water of rivers. Bacterioplankton data of the Curonian Lagoon were obtained during the period 1995-2003 at 8-9 ecological monitoring stations once a month from April to November. In the spring (May), summer (August) and autumn (October or November) of 1993-2003 sanitary-microbiological researches were performed in 11 stations of the Lithuanian coastal water. During the period of investigations a tendency of decrease in number of coliform bacteria was observed in the area influenced by the water of the Curonian Lagoon. It could be due to the fact that in December 1998 the treatment facility of Klaipeda started to work. The other, though less polluted with relatively pathogenic microflora zone was observed near Šventoji. The area of the sea between Juodkrante and Nida is to the least degree influenced by waste water and the water quality there may be evaluated in general as bacteriologically clean.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122685525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The quantitative estimation of components of the sediment budget evidences the existence of “deficit” of sediment gain compensated by bottom erosion. The mechanisms of this process were discussed. It was concluded that the Vistula Lagoon exhibits at present the unusual for estuarine inland waters tendency of general deepening and is in the transition to a new equilibrium in its sediment budget.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125261252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
