Significant agreement between the simulation and field observations was achieved, and carried out statistical analysis allowed a qualitative assessment of model data used for analysing and predicting wind conditions over the open sea. Oxygen, iron(II), total dissolved iron, manganese, copper and lead fluxes were calculated. For the first time the fluxes of metals bonded with organic matter of sea water were studied. The contribution of metals bonded with organic matter to the total flux was varied depending upon conditions and may reach up to 70 %. It was found that metal fluxes at the coastal zone are larger than at the center of the lagoon by the factor of 2-4.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121277214","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Damping of wind waves due to films of different organic substances is studied in a wide wavelength (from decimeter to millimeter-scale) range, and is shown to be maximal for mm-scale waves. An effect of changing of Ka-band radar Doppler shifts in slicks is revealed in the experiments, the Doppler shift changes are shown to depend strongly on the film elasticity. Physical mechanisms and simple theoretical models of the effects of films on short wind waves are discussed.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134395239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Influence of the vertical salinity gradient is discussed on an example of the Baltic wintry conditions; the horizontal salinity gradients are considered in the Vistula lagoon and the Baltic Sea. On the basis of an available field and remote sensing data obtained in the river Pregel mouth, the Vistula lagoon and the Baltic Sea we analyzed the thermal bar structure, formation and propagation. In particular, we have arranged the dates in spring and in autumn, when water in the hydrological system of the river Pregel - the Vistula lagoon - the Baltic Sea reaches the temperature of maximum density (depending on water salinity). An average speed of the thermal bar propagation in the given system is estimated and compared with ones observed for lakes. Peculiarity of the structural front formation and propagation in the Baltic are discused.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129532566","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper will deal with some physical boundary conditions which have to be regarded when using passive means at sea. In particular the characteristics of booms and barriers will be briefly discussed as well as the physical differences and the typical ways of application addressed. The paper will then concentrate on mechanical booms and discuss some of the physical properties that govern the behaviour of oil in front of a boom, show the limits of containment, and will give some aspects on the application of booms at sea. Finally the influence of waves on booms will briefly be addressed and the use of sorbent booms at sea considered.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116402731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The biomarkers in flounder from the Klaipėda offshore (reference site) zone were analyzed in December 2001 and 2002. The study results showed the lowest level of genotoxicity and cytotoxicity in organisms inhabiting offshore and Palanga localities in spring 2001. The Palanga zone was originally considered as a coastal reference site, whilst an oil spill occurred in the Būtingė oil terminal in November 2001, causing contamination of this area. After the oil spill the significant increase in genotoxicity and cytotoxicity was detected in mussels and flounder from the Palanga and Būtingė localities. The levels of PAH metabolites, lysosomal membrane instability, as well as neoplastic lesions increased also significantly in flounder after the oil spill. Further elevation of cytogenetic damage caused by the oil spill in mussels was also observed in June 2003. Nevertheless, recovery of flounder was shown by some biomarker responses 10 months after the oil spill.","PeriodicalId":287811,"journal":{"name":"2004 USA-Baltic Internation Symposium","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128647042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
