It is based on a direct drive system where the contra-rotating blades are directly fixed on the rotors of an axial-flux permanent magnet motor. The latter one is constituted by two external rotors and a single internal stator divided in two different sides. The study is focused on a 6 slots-4 poles three-phase motor and on a 10 slots-4 poles five-phase motor, characterized by single-layer armature windings. In a first step, both a high speed (1200rpm) Salient-Pole Synchronous Generator (SPSG) and a low speed (400rpm) direct driven Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) of the same nominal power with the SG installed in the investigated ship are designed and geometrically optimized, based on the specified operating characteristics. The generators are quantitatively compared and assessed in terms of their torque capability, efficiency and produced power quality, illustrating that the low-speed PMSG constitutes a favorable option for SG applications. In a second step, assessing the benefits of the low speed PMSG, a drive system is designed for the implementation of PMSG in the ship's electric grid. Appropriate converter topology and advanced generator control methodology are adopted enabling successful interconnection of the SG system with the electric grid as well as high quality electric power supply. In this paper, a method for the calculation of reliability (i.e. number of failures / 106 hours) of a three-phase full-bridge inverter, which is employed in the dynamic waste heat recovery system of an aircraft, is presented. The main factors for the reliability analysis that have to be considered is the topology of the inverter, the ambient temperature conditions, the power switches (type and modulation technique), and the harmonic filter. The power inverter reliability has been calculated using a software program developed under the Matlab platform, which was used to calculate the failure rate of each device of the inverter, such as the power switches, the DC-bus capacitor and the filter inductor, given the operating switching frequency value. The energy consuming brake is a kind of electric brake process, which is realized by motor, brake resistor and its heat dissipation subsystem. In this study, the calculations and numerical simulation models of the brake resistor and its cooling subsystem of a heavy duty series-parallel hybrid electric vehicle is developed to investigate the heat transfer regulations in the electric brake process. The factors that affect the requirement of system cooling air mass flow and power consumption of the whole thermal management system in electric brake process are identified and studied. The results show that the main influencing factors of heat transfer in electric energy consuming brake process include ambient temperature and initial brake velocity. When ambient temperature is constant, the needed cooling air mass flow is basically unchanged as initial brake velocity varies between 15km/h and 30km/h for the small brake energy. The requirement of system cooling air mass flow increases as initial brake velocity grows between 30km/h and 70km/h. They perform three times power function relationship. The requirement of system cooling air mass flow increases as ambient temperature grows when initial brake velocity is constant. They perform exponential function relationship. Due to the proximity effect, the impedance of the wires bunched together compared to that of the wires installed singly has greatly changed. Impedance changing causes changes in the voltage drop on the wires, and the load may not work well. In this paper, Maxwell is used to model the bunched wires, and co-simulation of Maxwell and Simplorer is adopted to obtain the impedance value of the wire under test. The logical behaviour is represented by Statechart diagrams using the Statemate™ Magnum Tool. The model pointed out permits to describe the specification in scalable way, giving both a high level of abstraction and a more detailed level of description. The proposed methodology has been applied to represent the Bologna-Firenze and Milano-Bologna ETCS lines. Each of these entities can play a significant role in an integrated energy management system. For dealing with such a complex system, a multi-agent system (MAS) is proposed in this paper to distribute the intelligence among individual actors and to tackle the scalability challenge. The proposed multi-agent system applies concepts typical of the smart grid for defining functionalities, actions and information.
