Such design solutions are often carried out amateurishly and used in small domestic wind power plants. The premise priority of creating a mathematical model of the generator, presented in this article, was simplicity and reference to the classic solutions of electric machines. The interaction of higher harmonics of flux density distribution on the Electromotive Force (EMF) shape is considered. The algorithm is designed to be specifically useful to control Synchronous Reluctance Machines. In the algorithm flux linkage values in the direct and quadrature axis are treated as state variables. Those flux linkage values and the electromagnetic torque are estimated using the aforementioned model. The algorithm is divided into two modes, first to ensure fast reaching of the commanded angular velocity and second to ensure stable operation of the drive when it is obtained. Additional criterion used in the control algorithm is to minimize the ohmic losses in the phase windings. In the paper the way of formulation of the needed mathematical model by the drive controller, based on the measurement results, is also presented. At present this structure is frequently used especially in renewable energy systems of low power. Simulation of this system is troublesome due to the high switching frequency of semiconductors. To avoid this problem an average value modelling is applied. Presented analysis considers only fundamental harmonic components of current and voltage. The system components are structured in the form of equivalent circuits that include also power losses. Torque versus speed characteristics were executed for different control parameters. The energy converter designed to this motor allows to control phase current and switching angles independently. The experimental results show that the shape of the mechanical characteristics heavily depends of the switching angles and maximum phase current. The cause of this phenomenon is a different relationship between the parameters of the components of the short-circuit equivalent impedance. In small transformers short-circuit equivalent resistance is usually greater than the short-circuit equivalent leakage reactance. The rated data of the designed generator are following: power − 15 kVA, voltage − 400 V (Y), rotation speed − 93.75 rpm. The design assumptions, chosen results of the design process and experimental tests of the prototype PMSG are presented. The considered PMSG can be used in low-power wind plants applied for vessels (ships, yachts) and stationary prosumers power installations. The whole project realization (concept, design, engineering documentation, building and testing) of the prototype low-speed PMSG was commissioned by company ALU ECO Sp. o.o. The torque static characteristics were determined based on numerical calculations and they were compared with results from laboratory tests. Waveforms of currents, voltages and electromagnetic torque were determined at the specified working point. Mechanical and drive overall efficiency characteristics were determined. Numerical simulations were carried out for a selected number of shorted turns. The elaborated model consists of field, circuit and motion equations. Based on the models, torque waveforms have been charted. Torque waveforms have been designated for two states of the machine - one with a rated load and the other with no-load. Special attention was paid to analysis of torque during the startup state.
