The decentralized design of low-order robust damping controllers is presented based on a weighted and normalized eigenvalue-distance minimization method (WNEDM) employing several superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) devices. These controllers an aimed at enhancing the damping of multiple inter-area modes in a large power system. This paper describes a comprehensive and systematic way of designing these controllers. In a first step, a set of training scenarios is set up, corresponding to various operating conditions and disturbances. Each scenario is analyzed to determine the minimal load shedding which stabilizes the system, with due consideration for the shedding location and delay. In a second step, the parameters of a closed-loop undervoltage load shedding scheme are determined so as to: (i) approach as closely as possible the optimal sheddings computed in the first step, over the whole set of scenarios; (ii) stabilize the system in all the unstable scenarios; and (iii) shed no load in the stable ones. The corresponding optimization problem is solved using a (micro-)genetic algorithm. The Newton Raphson and fast decoupled load flow solution technique and a host of their derivatives have efficiently solved the well behaved power systems for a long time. However, the distribution networks, because of the some of the following special features, fail in the category of ill-conditioned power systems for generic Newton Raphson and fast decoupled load flow methods: radial or near radial structure (weakly meshed); high R/X ratios; multi-phase, unbalanced operation; unbalanced distributed load; and dispersed generation. Using a simplified model developed, some useful expressions pertaining to the UEL controller design have been derived. A tuning method which is based on the frequency response technique is proposed. Extended interconnected systems experience stability problems and inter-area oscillations, which can lead to system interruptions. Furthermore, long distance AC transmission requires reactive power compensation, introducing stability constraints that limit transmitted power. These conditions can be improved by the use of FACTS controllers. These improvements can be predicted by the proper simulation of FACTS controllers, which include all controls and a detailed representation of the system. Hence, this paper discusses FACTS controller models used through various analysis and design steps on FACTS projects. A versatile distribution system simulation known as VIPCROP, which integrates load flow, fault current calculation and modeling of overcurrent relays and breaker operation, is proposed and developed. It is aimed to provide a visually integrated tool for operational planning, assessment of overcurrent relay settings, evaluating network proposals and for real-time fault diagnosis and supply restoration. The simulator implements the SCADA type of full graphic display of the single-line diagram superimposed with the calculated line current flow during normal condition, and the calculated fault current distribution and breaker tripping time during fault conditions. In contrast with the conventional load flow and fault current calculation programs, the proposed simulator-type of approach enables the user to operate a circuit breaker, activate a fault at a particular location, start a large motor at a particular bus, or change a transformer's tap-ratio. The immediate effects of the user's operation are modeled and the results are visually displayed on the single-line diagram similar to the real time display of operating a network in a control center. In addition, while operating the system, the user can visually modify the network such as adding a new bus, a new line or changing the settings of a particular relay. Such is the case of micro turbines to generate electric power, whose original design contemplated the feeding of remote loads which could not be assisted by the distribution network of any utility. However, the fact that these micro turbines operate at very high speed and frequency (96000 RPM and 1600 Hz) force the use of power electronics in order to have 240 volts output at 60 Hz. This described flywheel energy storage system is designed to replace of the conventional EMB (electromechanical battery) system. To realize the high efficiency and to minimize the torque ripple, the waveform of the converter output current is controlled to be sinusoidal and in phase or inverse phase with the electro-motive voltage in motoring mode and regeneration mode, respectively.
