While market structure differs by region, the common denominator has been the high level of price volatility experienced in these markets. As power suppliers, marketers and consumers seek to manage their positions in this volatile environment, understanding the locational spreads in power prices is becoming increasingly important. The paper develops a dynamic model describing the interplay of electricity prices in a multi-market environment. In contrast to most existing price models, it is based on the fundamental interaction of demand and supply processes. We illustrate how delays in the information flow to market participants causes price differentials to occur between markets with unconstrained transmission interfaces. Furthermore we examine how correlation between load processes translates into a correlation between the price processes in a dual-market environment. These results are illustrated in a simulated example. In the context of the new model we examine current state of the art algorithms for valuing locational spread options. The work presented suggests that a single correlation factor may not be sufficient to describe the interplay of prices in a dual-market environment. The model illustrates how the price correlation shifts between two states based on the state of congestion on the system. Possibilities for extensions of current option valuation schemes are discussed.","PeriodicalId":286352,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Power Engineering Society Winter Meeting. While the purpose of any of the filtering schemes is for the attenuation of the high-order harmonics due to the inverter switching, the introduction of either of the filtering schemes will incur problems that must be understood and properly handled. Based on the electric circuit theory, the two filtering schemes are examined. Factors considered include the attenuation of harmonic voltages on the load-side of the series transformer, minimization of the inverter rating and the alleviation of other undesirable effects incurred by the filter installation.","PeriodicalId":286352,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Power Engineering Society Winter Meeting. The computer models provided to the customer at the proposal or project stage should reflect the transient gain required to meet the project specification. Settings and models with lower gains may not be adequate to give desired performance. Higher gains, to meet response times, may result in dynamic instability if the system becomes weaker, such as during contingency events. The benefits of power system stabilizer (PSS) control to improve stability margins in these cases are reviewed by the authors in this paper.","PeriodicalId":286352,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Power Engineering Society Winter Meeting. Polypropylene laminated paper (PPLP), a new insulating material with high dielectric strength and low loss was employed to this important outgoing lines from the newly-installed most modern power station. PPLP has been developed since 1970 by Sumitomo Electric and applied to various AC 154-500 kV and DC 500 kV transmission and/or submarine cables. Furthermore, the development of AC 800 kV PPCP cables has been already completed. Not only oil-filled cable, PPLP has been also proved to be very prospective solution to solid DC submarine cables. This paper covers the present state of the application of PPLP to EHV and UHV power cables as well as the prospect of application of PPLP to solid DC submarine cables.","PeriodicalId":286352,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Power Engineering Society Winter Meeting. Unfortunately they have some limitations, especially in the presence of hard nonlinearity as produced by switching of power electronic devices. Switching occurs most frequently between time steps and rarely coincide with them. This introduces an error on the switching instant. Without corrections, this error causes jitter and noncharacteristic harmonics. This article presents a simple yet effective method to achieve a very accurate switching representation in fixed-step simulations of power systems. A piecewise integration is performed and interpolated to the exact switching instant. From that point on, a second integration is performed with the usual fixed step using the final conditions present before the discontinuity as initial conditions. Finally, a second interpolation yields the current step results. The method has given very satisfactory results in various configurations such as HVDC converters, PWM inverters and STATCOM devices. Some of these results are presented and compared with those obtained with a precise simulation software based on variable-step integration methods.","PeriodicalId":286352,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Power Engineering Society Winter Meeting. The small-signal dynamic characteristics and control system performance are assessed using individual channel analysis and design (ICAD). ICAD is motivated through the need to understand the effect of system interaction on both the control design task and robustness. System interaction on individual transmissions is explicitly considered through the use of multivariable structure functions which, although scalar, encapsulate the multivariable nature of the system. The strength of such an approach is that highly successful single-input single-output classical control techniques such as Nyquist/Bode can be used without loss of multivariable information. For the example network, ICAD enables the design of the individual controllers to be performed independently of one another and determines that the effect of system interaction is not detrimental to network stability. It therefore potentially provides a strong platform for consideration of large-scale networks with embedded generation. Finally, the ICAD network control analysis and design is corroborated by nonlinear dynamic simulation running in PSS/E.","PeriodicalId":286352,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Power Engineering Society Winter Meeting. It is hard to determine which generators in the system or sub-system and which state variables should be used to get the maximum effect for quieting down the disturbance. An approach using the state variables feedback of the local generator, but including information of the closed sub-system, is proposed. Only sub-optimality is obtained here.","PeriodicalId":286352,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Power Engineering Society Winter Meeting. Conference Proceedings (Cat. The proposed procedure employs simplified expressions very similar to those adopted by IEC Standard in sinusoidal conditions, being the harmonic presence taken into account by a new proper definition of the load-loss factor and by the introduction of harmonic coefficients easily available. Numerical applications to low voltage and medium voltage cables are developed and discussed. The conclusion is that it is more needed to take into account the harmonic presence in the evaluation of cable cyclic rating than when dealing with 100% load factor.","PeriodicalId":286352,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Power Engineering Society Winter Meeting. Due to the difference in their inter-turn connections, the behaviours of electromagnetic transients in these windings are very different, especially at high frequencies. Although several winding models have been developed in the world for the calculation of impulse voltage distributions along transformer windings, no work has been done to determine the detailed high frequency characteristics. The authors have examined an interleaved and an ordinary disk winding of the same size and structure using a new transformer model and software package developed by Electricite de France. It has been found that for the interleaved winding, there exists a certain frequency range in which the winding behaves as a capacitive ladder network. However, the ordinary disk winding does not show such a frequency range. This result agrees with the previous measurements on several 66 kV to 220 kV power transformers. Comparison has also been made for these two windings in their impulse and sinusoidal voltage distributions. From theoretical analysis, an explanation is given to the difference of high frequency characteristics between interleaved and ordinary disk windings.","PeriodicalId":286352,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE Power Engineering Society Winter Meeting.
