From the 1990s onward there has been a growing scientific interest in transitions towards holistic spiritualities, a trend that was complemented by an increasing emphasis on secular identities such as atheism after the turn of the millennium. A review of this growing stock of academic literature shows that the theoretical explanations of the various diagnoses are remarkably the same, emphasizing a rationalization and pluralization of (religious) meaning systems, and a growth of moral individualism. Although these notions are undeniably true, they hardly enable a differentiation between individual transitions to the complementing post-Christian identities. In this article I delve into this ‘explanatory gap’ by comparatively reconstructing the trajectories of post-Christian identity reshaping, while focusing on the transition to atheist disbelief and holistic spiritualities. From a series of life course interviews it appears that the strictness of one’s religious milieu is a paramount factor in the process toward apostasy and embracing a new religious or secular identity later in life.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125486647","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Philosophers have given us ideas about good care. Good care is maintaining the world as a place of good life (Tronto). But good care is also a practice participating in that good life itself (MacIntyre). This article seeks the answer to the question in a journalistic observation of the practice itself. This observation, a series of portraits of healthcare workers in a hospital during the first wave of the crisis, is subjected to narrative analysis. The analysis shows that the narrative of journalistic observation makes visible the healthcare values versus other competing values. The hospital crisis has placed healthcare practice in a dual narrativity: that of struggle – the hospital as a ‘battlefield’ – and that of care. The core value, however, is that of connection. The answer to the question of good care corresponds to the ideas of the philosophers, but fills them out further and shows how and where good care is realized in practice.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117166638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They came to the Netherlands as guest workers and for a temporary stay. At the beginning of their arrival, there was a need to practise the faith in little circles in a limited way. Later on, they decided to bring their family. With the arrival of the children the need for religious education expanded and its central orientation changed. Many mosques are established in the second part of the eighties of the previous century. Islamic schools are founded to support the faith based education at home and in mosques. The religious education at the Islamic schools are meant to support and confirm the religious life of Muslim migrants and to transfer it to the new generations. The protecting of the faith became the central effort of religious educators and parents, as a reaction of social pressure experienced by Muslims. In this article I am discussing some consequences of this protecting approach to the content of religious education, the didactical approach used as well as some of the challenges related to the public debate about religious education and presence of Muslims in the Netherlands. At the end of this essay I will answer the question of how to relate this issue with the Dutch culture and central orientations of our political order.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125488429","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is argued that public funding of these schools is not incompatible with these principles – attention is drawn to a recent law which ensures some structural funding of religious instruction even on public schools – and that there are no good reasons – perceived risks with regard to issues of quality, segregation, indoctrination – to put an end to such funding.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131515967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It serves two goals: (1) to show to what extent youth, committed in their philosophy of life, agree with each of four typologically distinguished models of the relationship between philosophy of life and state: autonomyliberalism; diversityliberalism; groupcommunitarianism; and statecommunitarianism; and (2) to test whether different religious and philosophical convictions and practices influence the agreement with these typological models of the relationship between philosophy of life and state. The analysis shows that youth prefer a cooperative but restrained relationship between philosophy of life and state. Differences in preference between religious and humanist groups (i.e. Catholics, Protestants, Moslims and Humanists) are bigger than differences between Dutch and Flemish youth. Analysis also shows that religious and humanist convictions and practices play a role in the levels of agreement with each of the typologically distinguished models.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126375474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
