With a brief discussion on the fundamental ideas of continuous and discontinuous quantum phase transitions, we discuss the Kibble-Zurek scaling of defect generation following a ramping of a quantum many body system across a quantum critical point. In the process, we discuss associated models, both pure and disordered, and shed light on implementations and some recent applications of the quantum annealing protocols. Furthermore, we discuss the effect of environmental coupling on quantum annealing. Some possible ways to speed up the annealing protocol in closed systems are elaborated upon: we especially focus on the recipes to avoid discontinuous quantum phase transitions occurring in some models where energy gaps vanish exponentially with the system size. The final spin configuration in the Ising model can adiabatically arrive at a solution to a Hamiltonian, given a known set of interactions between spins. We enhance two photonic Ising machines (PIMs) and compare their performance against classical (Gurobi) and quantum (D-Wave) solvers. The temporal multiplexed coherent Ising machine (TMCIM) uses the bistable response of an electro-optic modulator to mimic the spin up and down states. We compare TMCIM performance on Max-cut problems. A spatial photonic Ising machine (SPIM) convolves the wavefront of a coherent laser beam with the pixel distribution of a spatial light modulator to adiabatically achieve a minimum energy configuration, and solve a number partitioning problem (NPP). Our computational results on Max-cut indicate that classical solvers are still a better choice, while our NPP results show that SPIM is better as the problem size increases. In both cases, connectivity in Ising hardware is crucial for performance. Our results also highlight the importance of better understanding which CO problems are most likely to benefit from which type of PIM. We revisit the numerical investigations on the spin glass order parameter distributions, which identify a low temperature along with high transverse field spin glass phase where the order parameter distribution becomes a delta function in the thermodynamic limit indicating the restoration of replica symmetry and ergodic nature of the system. In the remaining spin glass phase associated with high temperature and low transverse field, the observed distribution is broad akin to the Parisi order parameter distribution. This essentially indicates the non-ergodic behaviour of the system. We further discuss the annealing dynamics studies on the quantum SK model. Such investigations reveal the system size independence of annealing time when the annealing paths go through the ergodic spin glass region. Interestingly, when such dynamics are performed in the non-ergodic spin glass phase the annealing time becomes an increasing function of the system size. Spin autocorrelation shows faster relaxation in the ergodic spin glass region compared with that found in the non-ergodic spin glass region. We discuss how this is relevant to quantum annealing, but also many gate model algorithms such as VQE and QAOA. We theoretically show that for problems of practical interest for quantum computing and assuming only quadratic interactions are available between the binary variables, it is not possible to have a more efficient general encoding in terms of number of binary variables per discrete variable. We furthermore use a D-Wave Advantage 1.1 flux qubit quantum annealing computer to show that the dynamics effectively freeze later for a domain-wall encoding compared with a traditional one-hot encoding. This second result could help explain the dramatic performance improvement of domain wall over one-hot, which has been seen in a recent experiment on D-Wave hardware. This is an important result because usually problem encoding and the underlying physics are considered separately, our work suggests that considering them together may be a more useful paradigm. We argue that this experimental result is also likely to carry over to a number of other settings, we discuss how this has implications for gate-model and quantum-inspired algorithms. The fatigue performance of hybrid composites has not been extensively investigated yet. The paper presents an overview of the available knowledge on the fatigue of hybrid fibre-reinforced plastics, and, more specifically, reports the fatigue behaviour of a quasi-isotropic pseudo-ductile all-carbon fibre interlayer hybrid composite by experimental measurements and observations, with emphasis on the damage development. The fatigue conditions are tension-tension stress- and strain-controlled cyclic loading. The results include fatigue life for different maximum stress and strain levels, stiffness evolution and damage observations by X-ray micro-computed tomography. The studied hybrid all-carbon fibre quasi-isotropic composite exhibits pseudo-ductility in quasi-static testing. For stress-controlled fatigue, the fatigue load over the limit of elastic response is not sustained. Contrary to that, the composite retains its load-carrying ability in the pseudo-ductile regime for a strain-controlled regime, albeit with lowered stiffness. Frequently, this effect is coupled with the mechanical action of the compressive stress exerted by the pressure of the fluid phase that, in contrast, promotes an increase in the <i>T</i>g. This issue is relevant for technological and structural applications of composites with high-performance glassy polymer matrices, due to their significant impact on mechanical properties. We propose an approach to model and predict rubbery-glassy states maps of polymer-penetrant mixtures as a function of pressure and temperature based on the Gibbs-Di Marzio criterion. This criterion establishes that a 'thermodynamic' glass transition does occur when the configurational entropy of the system vanishes. Although questioned and criticized, this criterion constitutes a good practical approach to analyse changes of <i>T</i>g and, in some way, reflects the idea of an 'entropy catastrophe' occurring at the glass transition. Several polymer-penetrant systems have been analysed modelling configurational entropy by means of the Non-Random Hydrogen Bond lattice fluid theory, able to cope with possible non-random mixing and occurrence of strong interactions.
