They were practicing medical doctors, who worked in the first medical institutions that addresses the mental problems of children. Frankl introduced the idea of a contact disorder. Frankl’s role in the history of autism was discovered in 2015 and is clarified here. His idea influenced Asperger and Kanner, who emphasized that autistic children have different contact with their environment. Asperger and Kanner are well-known founders of autism research, but the article presents new discoveries about their work. They show that all symptoms of autism had a logical place in their theories.","PeriodicalId":283749,"journal":{"name":"Wetenschappelijk Tijdschrift Autisme","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131168357","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With your friend, you can visit places, discuss your inner feelings, and they provide feelings of safety and belonging. Yet, does this apply to everyone? Friendships can also have downsides, characterized by pressure to join in, jealousy or dominance. In this article we discuss that autistic young people also need friendships and want to belong, but due to different expectations back and forth, this can be more difficult than for non-autistic young people. Outcomes of our study are also discussed, showing that for young people with and without autism, positive friendships are associated with fewer symptoms of depression, but also with more symptoms of anxiety in autistic girls. The pressure to camouflage their autism may play a role here. Autism as a form of diversity, as is also profiled during the World Autism Acceptance Week in April, can also have added value and give more depth to a friendship.","PeriodicalId":283749,"journal":{"name":"Wetenschappelijk Tijdschrift Autisme","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134307788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Deze interactie kenmerkt echter ons huidige werk. Vroeger praatten we vooral over autisme, tegenwoordig praten we veel meer met mensen met autisme. Op allerlei manieren zijn zij betrokken bij onderzoek en onderwijs, en soms zijn ze zelf de onderzoeker of docent. Dit is inspirerend en maakt het werk veel relevanter. Bijvoorbeeld met de vraag over taal. Welke taal gebruiken we om autisme te beschrijven? Is het iets dat je hebt, of dat je bent? Het lijkt misschien een triviale vraag, maar voor veel mensen is dit een wezenlijk onderscheid, en wetenschappelijk gezien ook interessant. “Autisme hebben” was vroeger gangbaar. Je bent in de eerste plaats een persoon, en in de tweede plaats heb je autisme. Maar autistische mensen zelf brachten daar verandering in, omdat autisme juist wel als centraal onderdeel van hun identiteit gezien werd. Dus: ‘identity first’. Autistisch persoon. Je bent toch ook geen persoon met vrouwelijkheid? Je bent een vrouw. En autisme is geen ziekte die we willen genezen.","PeriodicalId":283749,"journal":{"name":"Wetenschappelijk Tijdschrift Autisme","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133146362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This complex of factors – as described in detail in this article – gives rise to a process because of which this population cannot optimally participate in society regarding several areas, such as school and work. To prevent such a declining process, a sustainable, multi-sectorial approach is needed. For this purpose, currently as part of the Academic Workplace Autism, inter-disciplinary teams are co-creating a set of complementary, suitable innovations.","PeriodicalId":283749,"journal":{"name":"Wetenschappelijk Tijdschrift Autisme","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124795915","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Disruption of the composition of gut bacteria can potentially cause the gut-brain axis to malfunction, leading to behavioral and gut problems linked to Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Examples of interventions that potentially have an influence on the composition of gut bacteria include diet, poop transplants and probiotics. Th e restricted diet of patients with ASD may explain the disruption of the composition of gut bacteria. However, this does not appear to be a cause of ASD but the disturbance may be causing (worsening) of the symptoms. Another intervention that can aff ect the gut microbiota is a poop transplant. Improvement on several symptoms, such as social skills, hyperactivity, stereotyped behavior, and speech was observed, but the lack of a control group limits the validity of these results. A third type of intervention aimed at influencing the gut microbiota is probiotics. Although it is plausible that probiotics have an eff ect on ASD, this has not yet been scientifi cally established. This is because such research is inherently complex due to the large diversity of possible probiotics, the heterogeneity in the microbiota itself, external influences that are difficult to control, the range and heterogeneity in ASD symptoms, and the amount of factors that contribute to the development of ASD symptoms. In practice, it is difficult to establish “one size fi ts all” guidelines. Hence, working with an individualized approach that tailors interventions to each individual’s unique profile is recommended. For health care providers, this can be an opportunity to focus on what works in the specific situation of my patient.","PeriodicalId":283749,"journal":{"name":"Wetenschappelijk Tijdschrift Autisme","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126416324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this pilot-RCT (N = 24), we aimed to test the effi cacy of Competitive Memory Training (COMET) for low self-esteem in youth with ASD (8-16y). We compared the combination of COMET and Care As Usual (COMET+CAU) with CAU-only, to explore whether COMET had additional effects on low self-esteem and co-occurring symptoms of youth with ASD. Maintenance of effects was measured seven weeks later. Participants receiving COMET+CAU showed greater improvement on parent-reported self-esteem and externalizing symptoms than participants receiving CAU-only. Similar improvements between groups were found on self-reported self-esteem and depressive symptoms. Improvements remained stable until seven weeks after having received COMET+CAU, with depressive symptomatology improving even further. Given the small sample size and mixed results, this pilot study does not allow us to declare COMET as being necessary in enhancing low self-esteem in ASD. However, this study indicates that when given parallel to CAU, COMET can help to improve self-esteem and co-occurring externalizing problems in youth with ASD in only a short period of time.","PeriodicalId":283749,"journal":{"name":"Wetenschappelijk Tijdschrift Autisme","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127462972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
