Whereas the electric and electronic equipment can be protected by a comprehensive surge protection concept, outer structures particularly the rotor blades are hit by direct lightning strikes. In defined maintenance cycles these damages are inspected and repaired in costly operations. In this paper a method for lightning current measurement is presented. It enables the operator to measure lightning currents directly and to determine their parameters like amplitude, current rise time and charge. The presented system with three sensor units is originally developed for wind turbines, to adapt maintenance cycle times to the real number of lightning strikes. So, cost-effective installation schemes depending on the condition of lines have been sought. In recent years, due to the reduction of the cost of line surge arresters for lower voltage transmission lines, installation rate at some lower voltage transmission lines in Japan has much improved, and failures of line surge arresters have been reported along with it At such transmission lines, failures of surge arresters need to be taken into account in evaluating the lightning performance. In this paper, we propose a calculation model for lightning overvoltages on the railway level crossing system as typical railway signalling equipment. Complementary procedures are also described, such as the treatment of external conductors and antennas. For these networks, single phase faults can lead to enduring overvoltages on the sound phases, stressing equipments like arresters. Usually, this is not a problem when the network is planned to operate with resonant grounding. But the situation changes when a solidly grounded network is adapted to operate with a resonant grounding. In this case, the natural solution is the replacement of the arresters by equipments with higher rated voltages, implying in higher costs and raising the residual voltage on arresters during a current surge. In contrast to the classic rolling-sphere it does not use fixed radii, it works with a varying radius. The method only uses existing and in international standards accepted results, fundamentals of lightning physics, and investigations; on that base a numerical method is elaborated. Using the dynamic electro-geometrical model, secondly some examples of protection with air-termination rods planned with the classic rolling-sphere according to IEC 62305-3 and for the classes of protection I–II–III–IV are investigated. It is shown, that the interception efficiencies are much higher than documented in the standard series IEC 62305. Reason is, that the method of the rolling-sphere is conservative, and that it gives the planner of lightning protection systems only the points, where lightning may strike, but without a rating with a striking probability. Soibelzon","doi":"10.1109/SIPDA.2011.6088448","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/SIPDA.2011.6088448","url":null,"abstract":"This paper analyses virtues and limitations of a new risk assessment software tool called TUPÃ developed by the IEE-USP (Institute of Electrotechnics and Energy — University of São Paulo) in Brazil, compared to the widely distributed Software Risk Assessment Calculator (SIRAC), developed by IEC. Besides, it checks its accordance with the risk evaluation methodology proposed by the IEC 62305-2 ed1.0 standard, through manual calculations applied to the selected example. An analysis of the data entry interface of the TUPÃ software tool, including accessibility, limitations and different alternatives for the parameter values is developed in comparison with the SIRAC tool. Aiming to compare the performance of both software, the document includes a risk assessment calculation against lightning for a building belonging to our University in La Plata, Argentina. In order to limit the extension of the paper, just some of the risk components are considered. Final results are compared, as well as partial results, when available. As simplified tools, the overall advantages and limitations of both software were fairly balanced. For instance, the SIRAC software allows for more than one service, while TUPÃ only considers one at a time. On the other hand, TUPÃ allows for the influence of an adjacent structure, which SIRAC ignores.
