Return stroke models help to characterize and quantify the electromagnetic fields produced by return strokes at different distances. For engineering applications, the most important parameters are the return stroke current and its generated electromagnetic fields. Therefore, return stroke models should be capable of generating electromagnetic fields and channel base currents similar to those obtained experimentally. In this paper, a review of the most commonly used engineering return stroke models is developed. A brief description of the models is presented, and using a typical channel base current waveform and return stroke speed as model inputs, the electric fields at different distances are calculated and compared with those observed in nature. The workers involved on this job may be subjected to risks related to lightning strikes. This article deals with risk analysis in maintenance job. A study of references about lightning protection systems is made. The IEC 62305-2 toll for risk calculation is present and a tolerable risk is defined. Risk of loss of human life is calculated in several situations and the necessity of implementation of measures to reduce the risk is analyzed. Initiation conditions of upward lightning are still subject of ongoing research and probably needs consideration of local conditions. In this paper results of measurements of upward lightning from the Gaisberg Tower (GBT) in Austria are summarized and compared with some other measurements on towers or rocket-triggered lightning. Upward lightning initiated by a positive upward leader is the most common type (93%) of lightning observed at the GBT, nevertheless 3% of the discharges are bipolar and 4% of the tower flashes are lowering positive charge to ground. This paper investigates the influence of interconnection on the lightning surge response of wind turbine grounding system. Two different numerical methods, Numerical Electromagnetics Code (NEC-4) based on Method of Moments (MoM), and Virtual Surge Test Lab (VSTL) based on Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method are used for electromagnetic analysis of lightning surge response of wind turbine grounding system. Comparison of results using NEC-4 and VSTL are made to clarify the usefulness of these methods for transient analysis of a large grounding system. Field measurements were carried out regarding both soil resistivity and tower footing resistance, as well as laboratory tests to determine the positive and negative critical impulse flashover voltage (CFO) of insulator strings. In the new IEC 62305 series the negative first stroke became part of the standardization process the first time. Up to now the calculation of separation distances in the IEC-Standard is determined only by the parameters of negative subsequent strokes. The paper shows, that the parameters of the negative first stroke have a big impact on this calculation. By means of three different examples the influence of first and subsequent strokes on the probability of insulation failure per flash was investigated. These examples represent insulated standoffs and insulated down conductors which are the main technologies currently used in isolated LPS. The calculations are done using the logarithmic normal distributions of I and di/dt. As a result it is shown that the probability of insulation failure of an insulated LPS depends strongly on the technology used. It seems to be that the rod-rod spark gap which is basis for the calculation of separation distances according to the IEC standard as well as the insulated stand-off show a similar performance.
