The end users of the database will mainly be neuroscientists, especially those studying the invertebrate nervous system. It is mainly a document database, collecting papers on the leech nervous system, which is maintained in a largely automatic fashion. The database is composed of three subsystems: (1) an object oriented, relational database management (sub)system, devoted to storing and maintaining the data and to provide input/output tools to the end users; (2) a document understanding subsystem, which transforms paper documents into an electronic format which can be stored in the database; (3) an information retrieval subsystem, through which end users extract information from the database. The actual system has been developed as a combination of original modules (the document segmentation module, the field extraction module, parts of the information retrieval subsystem, the user interfaces) with commercial products (the database management subsystem, the OCR module), and a relevant part of the effort has been put into the integration of the several modules into a common framework.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. However, this practice often has unwanted side-effects such as unauthorised copying, redistribution or modification of these documents. Moreover, the recipient usually has no convenient means of confirming the authenticity of the document, while the sender has no proof of receipt. In this paper we present the major requirements for the commercialisation of electronic information and describe an agent-based framework for the exchange of arbitrary electronic documents over open networks.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Reliable requirements through the quality gateway 可靠的要求通过质量网关

However, if the software is based on inaccurate requirements then, despite well-written code, the software will be unsatisfactory. Instead of limiting our testing to code, we should start testing as soon as we start work on the requirements for a product. This paper describes a quality gateway process for testing relevance, coherency, traceability, consistency and other characteristics that contribute to successful requirements. The starting point of the tests is that each requirement must have a testable fit criterion. The fit criteria are used to test whether any given solution satisfies, or does not satisfy, the requirement. The aim of the quality gateway is to find requirements-related defects as early as they can be identified and hence prevent them from being incorporated in the design and implementation.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. In recent years several studies have been conducted into the development of spatial database systems, but a formal definition of maps as hierarchies of spatial objects has yet to be found. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a model of a map as close as possible to its concept in the real world. A logical system for formal manipulation of spatial objects is then introduced and operations on these objects are defined. Our system of spatial objects originates in a different manner than systems of mereology. The concept of map as formally defined here enables us to model various aspects of real world geography and implement adequate operations for answering a wide range of queries.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Such applications usually use a large number of XML data. First, we must allow users to retrieve only necessary portions of XML data by specifying search conditions to flexibly describe such applications. Second, we must allow users to combine XML data from different sources. To this end, we will provide a query language for XML data tentatively called XQL. We have designed XQL, keeping in mind its continuity with database standards such as SQL and OQL although we don't stick to its strict conformity. In this paper, we describe the requirements for a query language for XML data and explain the functionality of XQL including XML version of database operators such as select, joint, sort, grouping, union, and view definition. We make brief comments on the implementation and semantics.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Tenth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications. The article presents the methodological setup of the author's research about legal causal knowledge and it shows that merging legal-theoretical and AI-like views on causation requires a preliminary thorough ontological specification of the notion of 'Event', which is generally considered as the basic building block of causal reasoning.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. IT-security in electronic commerce: from cost to value driver 电子商务中的it安全:从成本到价值驱动

{"title":"IT-security in electronic commerce: from cost to value driver","authors":"R. For that reason, we call IT security a value driver and introduce a first proposal for quantification of benefits that will allow to improve economic calculations in security management. In order to appropriately address the role of IT security, this must be done in a highly professional way. Therefore, we introduce a management approach that has been designed for enterprise-wide as well as daily business handling of IT security within EC environments. As part of this approach, we aim to support decisions on the appropriateness of security measures by introducing the quantification of IT security benefit. This will allow IT security to be managed more efficiently in the future. The paper is intended as a starting point to define and improve methods and procedures for determining efficient balances between IT security costs and benefits.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The life courses of most individuals are built around three interlocking successions of events: household history, residential trajectory and occupational career. As a result of societal evolution, these patterns of events became more complex during last decades, creating new challenges for urban and regional planners. Therefore, in-depth understanding of these intertwined sequences of events and decisions should provide useful information aimed at improving planning. The paper develops a modelling framework capable of handling complex life trajectories, by using standard database principles. A conceptual model describes successive or simultaneous events and statuses forming each of the three trajectories, as well as their intersections. This model is mapped into the MapInfo GIS, to handle successive and/or simultaneous home and workplace location changes. Example queries use data coming from a detailed retrospective survey of a spatially stratified random sample of professional workers living in the Quebec Metropolitan Area. The georelational database describes successions of events forming their biographies. The model produces data structures serving as input to \"spatial\" event history analyses, performed by regression techniques which consider \"censoring\" as well as time-varying and space-varying explanatory variables. A summary is given of this application issue, followed by an evaluation of relational GIS and database capabilities to handle such a project.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Given a set of points in an n-dimensional space (the points can be derived from images, sounds, or other multimedia objects), KL provides a mapping which reduces the dimensionality of the input patterns to k (k/spl epsiv/3qn), without altering their structure too much. Unfortunately, KL suffers from some scalability problems: in fact, as the size of the database increases, the efficacy and efficiency of the transform progressively vanish. In this work we introduce the basics of a new generalization of KL (named MultiSpace KL or MKL) which allows the scalability problems to be solved and we show how MKL can be used for similarity searches in multimedia databases. The paper reports some preliminary experiments where MKL outperforms KL as the size of the database increases.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
