Recently, some commercial databases started to support user-defined periodicity in the queries, providing high level languages to this purpose (e.g., TimeSeries in Oracle 8). On the other hand, existing relational data models do not support user-defined periodicity in the data, with few exceptions. We sketch a high level \"symbolic\" language for representing periodicity in a \"human oriented\" way, and propose a temporal relational model which supports user-defined \"symbolic\" periodicity in the validity time of tuples. We also define the temporal counterpart of the standard operators of the relational algebra, and introduce new temporal operators and functions. Finally, we sketch a symbolic implementation of the algebraic operators.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The system named WHOWEDA (WareHouse Of WEb DAta) stores extracted Web information as Web tables and provides several Web operators, eg. Web join, Web select, global coupling, etc., to manipulate Web tables. During the implementation of WHOWEDA, it is necessary to perform systematic testing on the system and to evaluate its system performance. While it is possible for WHOWEDA to be tested or evaluated using actual Web pages downloaded from WWW, the amount of time required for such testing and evaluation would be so high that a comprehensive experimentation would not be possible. To overcome these difficulties, we have proposed to develop a synthetic Web database generator called WEDAGEN to efficiently generate synthetic Web information for performance evaluation and testing purposes. We present the major objectives to be accomplished by the proposed synthetic Web database generator.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. To the best of our knowledge, most tools which achieve this goal are not designed to find the geographic location of information sources. In many instances such information could prove to be extremely useful to answer queries with certain geo-spatial elements. The main contribution of this paper is the idea of discovering the geographic location of webpages obtained via a search engine query and visualizing the results by placing them on a map in an attempt to convey spatial attributes such as location and distance. Current search engines ignore the existence of such geographic meta-data and therefore are unable to process queries which are inherently geo-spatial in nature. Our system (Geo Viser) integrates this functionality to supplement the current capabilities of a search engine.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Most interfaces to digital libraries present themselves as various forms of sorted lists, providing metadata information on the documents in textual form. This prohibits intuitive understanding of document archives or Web search results. We present the libViewer, a Java-based user interface to digital libraries using metaphor graphics to display information on the elements in a digital library in an intuitively understandable way. Metadata on digital libraries based on the Dublin Core Initiative is mapped onto a set of metaphors to allow instant recognition and orientation in an unknown document collection, facilitating interactive retrieval and exploration.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The view developed in this paper is that scenario based approaches should be looked upon as reusable components. Our concern is therefore twofold: first, to represent scenario based approaches in a modular way which eases their reusability and second, to specify the design context in which these approaches can be reused in order to facilitate their integration in existing methods. The paper presents also an implementation of our proposal using SGML-HTML to store scenario based approaches in the multimedia hypertext documents and illustrates the retrieval of components meeting the requirements of the user by means of SGMLQL queries.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. This requires adequate tools to facilitate indexing, storage, and retrieval of documents written in different languages. We present a method for semi-automatic indexing of electronic documents and construction of a multilingual thesaurus, which can be used for query formulation and information retrieval. We use special dictionaries and user interaction in order to solve ambiguities and find adequate canonical terms in the language and an adequate abstract language-independent term. The abstract thesaurus is updated incrementally by new indexed documents and is used to search documents concerning terms in a query to the document base.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. A lot of corporate GIS databases are in development, they support the legal management and distribution of cadastral maps. However, the management of the propagation of geographical updates toward relevant user databases is still a methodological and technical problem to address in the context of a corporate application. This paper proposes a lineage metadata model that supports the management of geographical changes in the context of a corporate cadastre application. Geographical changes are identified from an analysis of the French cadastre which acts as a case study for the development of our model. The lineage metadata model is based on the application of a filiation tree that permits the management of the evolution of geographical objects and the generation of historical queries. The proposed model is specified and validated with the O/sub 2/ object-oriented database.","PeriodicalId":276867,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
