The purpose of this study was to promote the epistemic activity of students (critical and creative thinking) through collaboration (dialogic argumentation). The study analyzes the relationship between the intensity of student work using the tools provided in the virtual learning environment and the quality of academic products made by the teams. The students worked in 12 integrated teams in a Moodle platform. The teams conducted a case study (problem-based learning PBL) based on a topic of the curriculum chosen by them. The dynamics was modeled by means of collaboration scripts. The co-evaluation (peer review) was conducted through questionnaires and rubrics to evaluate the report of the case study and the collaborative process. As conclusion, we can say the teams that worked in collaboration had higher epistemic activity and therefore did better.","PeriodicalId":275003,"journal":{"name":"2014 9th International Conference on Computer Science & Education","volume":"272 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116119629","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The precipitation and deposition of crude oil polar fractions such as pitch in petroleum reservoirs reduce considerably the rock permeability and the oil recovery. In the present paper, the model based on a feed-forward artificial neural network (ANN) to predict pitch precipitation of the reservoir is pro-posed. After that ANN model was optimized by unified particle swarm optimization (UPSO). UPSO is used to decide the initial weights of the neural network. The UPSO-ANN model is applied to the experimental data reported in the literature. The performance of the UPSO-ANN model is compared with scaling model. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the UPSO-ANN model.","PeriodicalId":275003,"journal":{"name":"2014 9th International Conference on Computer Science & Education","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125922952","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we design and implement an automatic classification system for the stock comments, which is an important issue in discussing the relation between the trend of the stock market and the stock comments. A classifier based on support vector machine (SVM) is established in which the topic words are considered as the features of the classification for the stock comments. The number of the topic words is only a few dozen because the topic words are only related to the online stock comments. Therefore, our system does not suffer from the curse of dimensionality which is a challenge in the common text classification. The experiment results on some datasets of the stock comments show our method is effective and can be regarded as an automatic tool for the classification of the stock comments.","PeriodicalId":275003,"journal":{"name":"2014 9th International Conference on Computer Science & Education","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129832974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the use of talking-head animation has caused some emotional uneasiness among students when the design and realistic level of the animated characters were too human-like. This phenomenon is known as Uncanny Valley and was corroborated through a research by a Japanese robotics expert named Masahiro Mori in the year 1970, who also produced a graph explaining this phenomenon. Hence, this paper proposed a conceptual framework for talking-head computer animation, specifically for pronunciation learning and discussing the significance of choosing an appropriate animation character to avoid the emotionally unsettling effects of the Uncanny Valley phenomenon. The framework was developed based on theories, principles and literature review. This paper also suggests further studies to affirm the framework proposed.","PeriodicalId":275003,"journal":{"name":"2014 9th International Conference on Computer Science & Education","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124136518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a novel pavement crack detection method based on tensor voting is proposed. Firstly, the improved Retinex algorithm is adopted to eliminate the effect of uneven lighting. Then, a crack enhancement algorithm based on saliency is presented. This is followed by Otsu thresholding to acquire the crack seeds. Motivated by the framework of tensor voting, we remove noises and connect the crack seeds to generate integrated cracks. Finally, real cracks are extracted through non-maxim suppression algorithm. The proposed method has been tested on a real pavement crack database collected through a Chinese highway survey. The experimental results demonstrated that this method is more accurate and robust than traditional algorithms.","PeriodicalId":275003,"journal":{"name":"2014 9th International Conference on Computer Science & Education","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123003002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some methods of annotation have been proposed in the past years. In this paper, we introduce a novel annotation method based on non-linear regression model in order to annotate image accurately. Both the visual and the textual modalities are efficiently represented by a continuous feature vector, and are named by the visual blob vector and the semantic description vector, respectively. The task of annotation is to fit a rigorous mapping construction between the visual blob vectors and the semantic description vectors using a method based on least squares estimation. The advantages of the proposed method are conceptually simple, computationally efficient, scalable for huge amount of images and no priori knowledge of images and keywords. With a highly accurate approximation function, the experimental results demonstrate the improvement of annotation performance.","PeriodicalId":275003,"journal":{"name":"2014 9th International Conference on Computer Science & Education","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132537376","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach is based on a mechanism called grasp degree towards concepts, which can record the students' learning performance. Through grasp degree towards concepts, the learning system could provide adaptive guides for learners. On the basis of this mechanism, the study establishes a test question database for C programming course. The test question database is embedded in an adaptive learning platform, with B/S as the underlying framework, relying on Java web technology and SSH (Spring + Struts + Hibernate) framework for implementation.
