An integrated health care device is proposed to monitor glucose, pulse rate and bmi index of a patient. In the proposed approach, the spectral sensor is utilized to measure near infrared wavelengths, the IR sensor of 940nm wavelength is used to transmit the light from finger to photo-diode. The measurable voltage from the photo-diode is converted to glucose value (in mg/dl) using appropriate signal conditioning circuits. The complete circuit is integrated with mobile app to display the glucose level concentrations and also to indicate whether any further treatment is required. The IR sensor and photo-diode are mounted in a structure made of nylon material. The results show that the prediction of glucose level concentration using non invasive is comparable with invasive approach. Also, the pulse sensor is integrated with the mobile app to display pulse rate. The desired pulse rate of 70 to 80 bpm is obtained by placing the sensor near the wrist and ear lobe.","PeriodicalId":274260,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing, VLSI, Electrical Circuits and Robotics (DISCOVER)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134387350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various control techniques have been proposed in the literature to improve the performance of SMPS. However, each and every controller has its own merits as well as demerits. This paper used three different kinds of control schemes such as IMC-PID control, state feedback integral control, and sliding mode control, applied to the traditional buck converter to show their effectiveness. Firstly, a detailed small-signal model of a buck converter is developed. The small signal transfer function derived from the small signal model is used to calculate the control parameters. The working principle and control parameter tuning of above-mentioned control schemes are clearly shown with mathematical expressions. Finally, the effectiveness of the given controllers is validated by using MATLAB/SIMULINK software platform.","PeriodicalId":274260,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing, VLSI, Electrical Circuits and Robotics (DISCOVER)","volume":"700 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116965502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Multi-variate fault detection (FD) technique based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is restricted in capturing gaussian features of industrial data and it also assumes that observations at present time instant are not dependent on previous time instant. These assumptions do not apply for industrial processes due to the random characteristics of the variables and the underlying dynamics of the process. Another multi-variate FD technique named Indendent Component Analysis (ICA) has the ability of representing data as a function of latent variables (IC‘s) which are independent and this assumption is crucial to capture non- gaussian features in the data. The dynamics in the process data could be incorporated through dynamic ICA modeling where ICA model is embedded with lagged variables for capturing plant dynamics. In the current work, dynamic ICA (DICA) is used as the modeling frame-work while I2d, I2e and SPE statistics are the fault detection indicators. In ICA model development, the conventional FastICA algorithm involves random initialization of matrix B which results in different solutions for each iteration. To avoid this concern, in the current work, the matrix B is be initialized to a identity matrix to provide constant solution in each iteration. The performance of developed DICA strategy is demonstrated on a multi-variate process and a simulated quadruple tank process. The simulation results clearly suggest that the DICA strategy is able to detect anomalies effectively.","PeriodicalId":274260,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing, VLSI, Electrical Circuits and Robotics (DISCOVER)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129550524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In these lines, a novel, computationally efficient method for (front-view) road identification and tracking based on monocular vision is proposed which is designed to work on roads independent of markings. Road identification is implemented using a combination of spectral component analysis, edge energy-based filtering and morphological processing. Road identification and tracking works at 30 frames/sec for a frame size of 120 x 160 pixels, which is profiled on an Odroid XU4 mini-computer. Results indicating the performance of the proposed method as assessed on Cityscapes and KITTI datasets are presented.","PeriodicalId":274260,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing, VLSI, Electrical Circuits and Robotics (DISCOVER)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127701240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The need for a reliable standard to monitor/predict rehabilitative outcomes and an efficient control to drive orthotics and exoskeletons has motivated this work to use sEMG as an estimate for joint angle prediction. This work involves acquisition of 8 channel sEMG signals from lower extremity during knee articulation, involving flexion and extension for 20 able bodied subjects. Simultaneous knee joint angle measurement from goniometer is used to train a Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) to estimate knee Range of motion (ROM) with Root Mean Square values of 8 sEMG signals as input. Knee joint angles at full ROM for flexion $(90.9pm 2.4)$ and extension $(19.1 pm 2.6)$ were obtained. Estimation accuracy based on average Mean square error for flexion (0.146 $pm 0.197$) and extension $(0.098pm 0.129)$) with correlation factor (r) between actual and estimated values were found to be 0.93 and 0.95 respectively. Estimated flexion and extension angles were used to actuate the knee joint of a Virtual Human model. The results suggest that a high degree of correlation can be achieved between sEMG and kinematic measurements.","PeriodicalId":274260,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing, VLSI, Electrical Circuits and Robotics (DISCOVER)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133026909","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation (ICNIRP) provides the guidelines for protection against NIR. It suggests the reference electric field (e-field) value of 10 kV/m for occupational exposure and 5 kV/m for general public exposure for the substation. In view of this, e-field prevailing in a 765 kV generating substation is studied in the present work to assess the spatiotemporal distribution using charge simulation method (CSM) based model. This should give a feel of the possible threat posed by these fields to the working personal due to NIR. The upcoming EHV substation in central India is considered with its bays, transmission lines, buses, and ground wires. The instantaneous values of e-field are computed at different instances over the 50 Hz voltage cycle, at 2 m height above the ground plane over the entire substation arena. The demo of spatiotemporal variation of e-field computed at different instants of time over a cycle using simulating charges taken from the real-number-field will be presented and discussed during the presentation. This would result in a time-space changing e-field-force, and give a feel of creation of churning of air and electric wind. This will have much higher significance at the heights were conductors are placed where the e-fields are higher. It is also shown that because of spatiotemporal variation of e-field, the rms value of e-field can be easily obtained using simulating charges taken from complex-number-field which is of significance from the point of view of ICNIRP guidelines.","PeriodicalId":274260,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing, VLSI, Electrical Circuits and Robotics (DISCOVER)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129004300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The PV array and FC stack act as energy sources and a hydrogen electrolyzer system is used for energy storage whenever surplus power is generated by the PV source. A supercapacitor (SC) bank is utilized for short-term energy storage to handle abrupt changes in load demand. This system is capable of supplying both DC and AC loads. The inverter is controlled by a voltage and frequency (V&F) control scheme to regulate the deviations in frequency and voltage. PI controllers and fuzzy logic based self-tuning PI controllers (Fuzzy-PI) are used in the inverter control scheme to regulate V&F deviations caused due to the changing AC loads and their effects on the system are analyzed and compared. With fuzzy logic based self-tuning PI controllers, the frequency and load current deviations are found to be minimized. Modelling and simulations are accomplished in MATLAB/Simulink software.","PeriodicalId":274260,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing, VLSI, Electrical Circuits and Robotics (DISCOVER)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114496625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But handwritten character recognition is still an uncompleted task. In this paper we are proposing two techniques to recognize handwritten Kannada script, which yields high accuracy compared to previous works. There are lot of challenges in recognizing handwritten Kannada scripts. Few of the challenges include: each person have their own handwriting, there is no uniform spacing between alphabets, words and lines. Another main problem when it comes to Kannada language is that there is no large dataset available to train the recognition system, and it is challenging to write all combinations of each alphabet in Kannada script. In the proposed work, we have gathered the handwritten training set from the Web and from the students of our campus and segmented each letter. We have proposed two methods to recognize the handwritten Kannada characters. The first techniques is by Tesseract tool, and second is by using Convolution Neural Network (CNN). With Tesseract tool we have achieved 86% accuracy and through Convolution Neural Network we achieved87% accuracy although it might improve with the data set chosen and further enhanced image processing. The main idea behind this work is to extract text from the scanned images, identify the Kannada letters in it accurately and display or store it for further usage.","PeriodicalId":274260,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing, VLSI, Electrical Circuits and Robotics (DISCOVER)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131489913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
