The PAT uses a series of harmonically related periodic triangular waveforms to decompose a signal into a finite set of pulse active features. These features incorporate the signal's information in the pulse active domain, and which are subsequently processed for some desired application. PAT is non-invertible thus ensuring complete security of the original signal source. In this paper PAT is demonstrated on an ECG signal and used for biometric authentication. The new transformation technique is tested on 112 PTB subjects. It is shown in this paper that the new transformation has a superior performance compared to the conventional characteristic based feature extraction methods with additional security to avoid recovery of the original ECG.","PeriodicalId":270495,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE REGION 10 SYMPOSIUM","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129211988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed method is referred to as video compressive sensing by intra predictive coding. The experimental result shows that the proposed method reduces the data size of the key frame information transmitted between an encoder and a decoder. It is demonstrated that the method outperforms the conventional DCVS with respect to the code bit size and noise immunity.","PeriodicalId":270495,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE REGION 10 SYMPOSIUM","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126315166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the worldwide aging population grows tremendously, there is a need of reliable fall detection solution which operates in real-time at high accuracy and supports large scale implementation. Highly promising tool like Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) had been commonly used as a hardware accelerator in many emerging embedded vision based systems due to its high performance and low power consumption. As a result, it is the main objective of this work to propose a solution of FPGA-based visual based fall detection to meet the stringent real-time requirement. Our solution implemented in low-cost FPGA is able to achieve a performance of 58.36fps at VGA resolutions (640×480) through the exploitation of the parallel and pipeline architecture of FPGA. Besides, the optimization techniques that we proposed are able to reduce up to 33.33% of the dynamic power consumption of the system. The outputs of this work demonstrate the great impacts and potentials of FPGA's flexibility and scalability in the future healthcare industry.","PeriodicalId":270495,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE REGION 10 SYMPOSIUM","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129581376","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Treatments are made considering low-order hybrid modes in fiber, and the effects on the confinement patterns are analyzed under varying pitch angle of the introduced helix configuration. It has been noticed that such a twisted clad model possesses dominating disposition over propagating power along the tubing structure. As such, twisted clad model and its influence on the propagating power due to the angle of twists as well as layer radii remain the matters of debate of this paper.","PeriodicalId":270495,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE REGION 10 SYMPOSIUM","volume":"45 24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130939817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Vertical vibrations are due to the out of track conditions i.e. the blades of the helicopter being out of track. The objective of this research work is to minimize the vertical vibrations by improving the blade tracking using image processing. The proposed work is low-cost as compared to the other methods being used by the aviation industry and very simple to understand. This method consists of several steps which include: image filtering, image thresholding, position finding of each blade and conversion of pixels' distance into real-world distance. At the end the difference between tips of each blade is calculated with respect to a reference blade. The experimental results show that the proposed work is very effective and accurate.","PeriodicalId":270495,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE REGION 10 SYMPOSIUM","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130970746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A rectangular waveguide drives a combined wraparound co-axial / MPBG cylindrical waveguide system. The wraparound co-axial input coupler converts a dominant rectangular waveguide mode into a resonator mode and which is then coupled into the MPBG waveguide for the desired circular mode. A typical wraparound coaxial coupler for exciting a Ka-band MPBG waveguide has been designed. The structure has been simulated using 3-D electromagnetic code `CST Microwave studio'. Its Eigen mode simulation ensures that the RF magnetic field coupling into the co-axial waveguide through five azimuthally spaced apertures. Further, this simulation shows the confinement of the desired TE01-like mode in the defect portion of the MPBG triangular lattice structure and ensures that the all other competing spurious modes are suppressed. The transient analysis has also been preformed and it confirms the mode propagation in PBG waveguide through the calculation of insertion loss. The coaxial coupler offers a return loss and insertion loss of -30 dB and -0.5 dB respectively at 35 GHz with a wide bandwidth about 6%.","PeriodicalId":270495,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE REGION 10 SYMPOSIUM","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133080114","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study was undertaken to identify and propose rectification to these problems to optimise alarm system performance. The objective of the study is to identify the problems associated with clinical alarm system in Intensive Care Units (ICU), determine the contributing factors and propose ways to improve clinical alarm. In conducting the study it would also be interesting to explore the difference in the way doctors and nurses respond towards alarm system problems. A survey was conducted with 161 clinicians, 137(85%) were registered nurses and medical assistants (MA) and 24(15%) were medical doctors from ICU. Prospective observation study was carried out for a total of 120hrs. Thereon interview sessions with focus group were conducted followed with task analysis to identify the root cause of alarm problems in ICU. In this survey, responses to triggered alarm show that there is no significant difference in the response to clinical alarm system by doctors and nurses. Findings show that 14% of the respondent ignored or switched off the alarm. Outcome of the survey and observation study show that too many alarms is the main problem identified by 78% (n=161, p<;0.001) of the respondent. The task analysis indicates this problem is due to lack of integration and harmonisation, improper limit setting, lack of physiological information, no prioritisation of alarms and lack of consideration of human factor in alarm design. Incorporation of these factors in the design can minimise the frequency of alarm triggered thereby improving the performance of the alarm system.","PeriodicalId":270495,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE REGION 10 SYMPOSIUM","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122043475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Vehicle-based mobile mapping systems capture co-registered imagery and 3D point cloud information over hundreds of kilometers of transport corridor. Methods for extracting information from these large datasets are labour intensive and automatic methods are desired. This paper uses a depth map to segment regions of interest in colour images. Quantitative tests were carried out on two datasets. Experiments show that the resulting regions are relatively coarse, but overall the method is effective, and has the benefit of easy implementation.","PeriodicalId":270495,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE REGION 10 SYMPOSIUM","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121378071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
