The presented techniques extend the graphics pipeline through programmable shaders in order to support more general geometries and operations. Our point of departure from existing structural theories of graphics is a general spatial substrate, where data is encoded using higher-dimensional geometric primitives. From there, we define a series of processing stages, utilizing shaders to enable flexible and dynamic coordinate transformations. Furthermore, we describe how advanced visualization techniques, such as faceting and multiple views, can be integrated elegantly into our model. Bridging between Computer Graphics and Information Visualization theories, the elements of our framework are composable and expressive, allowing a diverse set of visualizations to be specified in a universal manner (see figure 1).","PeriodicalId":269563,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 15th ACM SIGGRAPH Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry - Volume 1","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121354928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While prior studies have used Social Force Model (SFM) for crowd simulation, a limitation of the model is that it does not allow the agent to make decision in getting to a specific point in a dense crowd in the shortest time possible. The next step refers to the temporary position before a final destination is reached and identifying a suitable next step in a dense crowd is challenging as there are many other moving agents that might block the path. Hence, to avoid formulating the decision of the agent's next step to proceed to a target point in an explicit manner, we therefore resort to SVMs whereby the position and velocity of the nearby agents are used as the feature vectors and the next step position as the class label. The training data is trained a priori with feature vectors and class labels supplied by human subjects. In order to produce a higher accuracy of training model, the training data is duplicated by permutation process. During the simulation, we used SFM and multiple SVM training models to control the motion of the intelligent agent. The results of the simulation indicated that the combination of SFM+SVMs enabled the intelligent agent to reach the final destination faster than using SFM on its own.","PeriodicalId":269563,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 15th ACM SIGGRAPH Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry - Volume 1","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130989243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

And it has become an essential animal model anatomy and physiology in many modern medicine research such as the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in recent years. This paper describes a pipeline from the raw rhesus macaque brain MRI data to intuitive 3D inspection its layers. Brain extraction is an initial step for subsequent analyses, but most of the existing methods so far are designed for human brain, which doesn't work well with the rhesus macaque. Firstly, we propose a reliable and efficient method to extract the brain from MRI datasets based on dividing the brain into blocks. Then, we design a trapezoid opacity transfer function based on CUDA-based real-time volume ray-casting, which is dedicated for the volume rendering to make the inspection more intuitive. Besides, the inspection of different tissues benefits understanding the volumetric datasets, so we also design layer filter for the segmented rhesus macaque brain datasets, which facilitates inspection of interior in ROI by an intuitive bimanual interaction via a Leap Motion sensor. Our experiments prove the usability and efficiency of the proposed methods.","PeriodicalId":269563,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 15th ACM SIGGRAPH Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry - Volume 1","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123733875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the past decades, curve network has been widely used as a sparse abstract representation for free-form surfaces. It is intuitive for designers to edit curve networks directly by drag-and-drop operation on an abitrary point, because the designers pay more attention on the lower-dimensional curves rather than the surface itself. In this paper, we present a general framework for editing a free-form surface by manipulating points on its curve network. This approach is very efficient and easy-to-use by working on a network of curves. A wide range of examples are shown which demonstrate the performance and practicability.","PeriodicalId":269563,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 15th ACM SIGGRAPH Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry - Volume 1","volume":"267 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122182538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, large amounts of fragments are mixed randomly when discovered, which brings terrific difficulties for their reassembly. This paper introduces an automatic approach for positioning large mixed archaeological fragments which come from a particular kind of artifact. The main idea is to position fragments based on partial matching between fragments and a complete artifact model using the multi-scale, informative and robust Heat Kernel Signature. The positioning pipeline contains four steps: feature points extraction for fragments and the complete artifact model based on Heat Kernel Signature; initial matching between feature points by comparing their Heat Kernel Signature curves; wrong matches removing using a basis points driven refinement procedure and rigid transformation generating by selecting three pairs of points among the correct matching results using farthest points sampling. After these steps, archaeological fragments can be positioned to different positions compared with the template model, which provides not only the classification information, but also the accurate relative position. The main contributions of this paper are using a novel feature extraction algorithm based on Heat Kernel Signature to assist partial matching, and a basis points driven refinement procedure to remove wrong matches. The proposed algorithm has been tested on the Terracotta Warriors fragments, and the results prove the effectiveness of the proposed positioning algorithm.","PeriodicalId":269563,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 15th ACM SIGGRAPH Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry - Volume 1","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115324047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet segmented vascular usually contain undesirable gaps. In order to recover the topology of the real vessel network, we need to connect the gaps between the closest discontinuous branches. A new method is proposed which merges discontinuities in three-dimensional(3D) images of vascular structures. This algorithm is based on the skeletonization of the segmented network followed by projection. And a nonlinear least square curve fitting algorithm is then applied for connection disconnections in broken branches. Curve fitting is an essential tool for analyzing biological data, while a nonlinear least square curve fitting has its advantages in dealing with the connectivity and smoothness of the whole piece of curves. The fitting method permits to merge the most common kinds of discontinuities found in vascular networks. The experimental results demonstrate the method is effective for fitting gaps of vascular structure.","PeriodicalId":269563,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 15th ACM SIGGRAPH Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry - Volume 1","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115663167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, if we can ensure that the motion we reconstruct is natural, we can improve upon the comfort and number of wearing sensors at the cost of reconstruction precision because all users in VR are blindfolded. In this paper, we introduce a novel real-time motion reconstruction and recognition method in VR only using the positions and orientations of user's head and two hands. To reconstruct natural motions according to rare sensors, we divide the whole body into the upper body and the lower body. The upper body reconstruction algorithm based on inverse kinematics which is more accurate and the lower body based on animation blending which only needs a small number of prepared animations. Meanwhile, a natural action recognition algorithm based on neural network will run in need to detect the target motions we have trained. We show that our method can reconstruct various full-body motions, such as walking in any direction, jogging, jumping, crouching and turning. Our method has the ability to reconstruct natural human motions which can be used in almost all VR multi-person interactive applications. The configuration of sensors we attached on the head and hands is very popular in VR well-known devices, so the method can be easily integrated into off-the-shelf VR devices.","PeriodicalId":269563,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 15th ACM SIGGRAPH Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry - Volume 1","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127808262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a mixed reality system with passive haptics integration that supports bare-hand interaction for users to see and touch virtual objects in immersive virtual environment (IVE). With the educational potential, the purposed system is applied to geography teaching. The prototype combines feature-based visual tracking for user's head and objects in the real environment with free-hand motion detection via a depth camera, thus user can see both their hands and objects in the virtual environment. A study of virtual teaching of geography of Germany was conducted, 18 subjects participated in the formal experiments which include three different learning environments. The results showed that the participants learning in the virtual environment with passive haptics consume more time than the virtual environment with free-hand gesture in finishing geography teaching tasks which is contrary to the expected result. The reasons are discussed in detail. Furthermore, quality of memorizing geographical knowledge in the group with passive haptic feedback exceeds that in the group without.","PeriodicalId":269563,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 15th ACM SIGGRAPH Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry - Volume 1","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131165359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
