The authors have presented a model where current density j through channels interconnecting micro-voids is assumed to depend on electric field E asj=(/spl sigma//sub 0//h)/spl middot/sinh (h/spl middot/E), where h is a parameter which characterizes the electric field dependence of j and /spl sigma//sub 0/ is the conductivity in low electric fields. Currents of the fundamental and 3rd harmonic waves estimated by Fourier analysis have been numerically calculated by solving a non-linear differential equation of the equivalent circuit based on the model. The numerical results give a good agreement with the changes of the observed magnitudes of fundamental and 3rd harmonic waves, I/sub 1/ and I/sub 3/ and their phase angles /spl theta//sub 1/ and /spl theta//sub 3/, respectively, for the application of a constant voltage. It has been concluded that the length of interconnected channels in the water treed region grows with time after the application of a constant voltage.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The dielectric properties of this system change drastically during the curing of the resin. We report on measurements of capacitance and loss, in the frequency range of 10 mHz to 1 MHz, on insulation models during the curing process. In order to relate the degree of curing to the dielectric response and to understand more about the curing reaction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements were made. The parameters in a simple thermal activated model for the degree of cross-linking were estimated from DSC data. From shifting the dielectric data measured at different temperatures it is concluded that there are different activation energies for the uncured and the ready cured samples. Two simple equivalent circuit models are proposed to describe the dielectric behaviour. The conclusion is that dielectric response measurements can be used to monitor the curing process and evaluate the final degree of curing.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The study of the electrical performance of ceramic insulators in vacuum is one of the vital tools in understanding the flashover phenomenon, which limits the performance of insulators in high-voltage devices. This study is concerned with the high-voltage vacuum electrical breakdown of alumina (Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/) ceramics, measured in terms of I-V characteristics, Fowler-Nordheim plots and spark rates. A systematic study of eight non-metallised (raw and chemically cleaned) and six metallised samples was carried out in electric fields up to 15 MV/m. From the complete performance history of each sample (including electro-optical threshold voltage, maximum leakage current and spark rate) a comprehensive comparison of the electronic behaviour from the ceramics was obtained. Clear distinctions were observed between the characteristics of metallised and non-metallised samples. The distinct behaviours of the two types are discussed in relation to contemporary physical models of the pre-breakdown surface-flashover of the solid insulator in vacuum.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The coil end turns are of the same insulation system as the coil straight part, but the end turns are usually subject to much higher compressive forces. These compressive forces usually result from end turn bracing components, during coil installation, and possibly during abnormal operating conditions such as a sudden three phase short circuit. These high compressive forces can lead to significant groundwall insulation damage if the compressive force capabilities of the insulation system is exceeded. Without changing the components or processing of the basic groundwall, which have been designed to meet rigid dielectric and mechanical performance requirements; a method to increase the compressive creep capabilities of the insulation system has been developed and tested at compressive loads of 5000 psi. The development, testing and the description of the enhanced compressive creep groundwall insulation is presented in this paper.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. When applying a DC field, the conduction properties of both the solid and liquid phases determine the distribution of the electric field and, therefore, the attraction force between particles in contact or nearly in contact. A crude model gives predictions for the attraction force which agree with measurements on scaled-up spheres of a slightly conducting polymer immersed into a much more insulating liquid. This model also gives estimates for the field in the liquid lying between the two spheres in the quasi-contact zone. This field ranges from 100 to 200 V//spl mu/m, values which are not much smaller than the breakdown field for small liquid gaps.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. In this paper, a new mathematical model based on Ayrton arc voltage gradient equation, which takes account of total resistance of the polluted insulator rather than the pollution resistance value has been proposed. The expression of total resistance of the insulator is also derived. The value of critical flashover voltage (CFV) obtained from the model is in good agreement with the ones obtained through experimental results.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. On the other hand, the oil is also used as a coolant of the system. The flow electrification process occurring at oil-pressboard interface seems to be initiating on electrical discharge incidents. Our recent investigations of electrification generated by an oil flow through different pressboards showed an influence of the pressboard degradation by artificial electrical discharges. Consequently the goal of this experimental study is to measure and to compare the convected space charge density value obtained with a brand new pressboard sample and with a pressboard coming from a damaged power transformer. The influence of an additive (BTA benzotriazol 1-2-3) in oil is also analyzed. The results show that the pressboard sample obtained from the damaged power transformer induces a high increase of flow electrification due to a modification of the exchange process at the pressboard-oil interface. On the other hand, an addition of BTA permits to reduce significantly flow electrification.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. We have tested these papers in real conditions by poling with AC voltage (field from 7.5 to 15.5 kV/mm RMS) at 25 and 100/spl deg/C. Residual electric field distribution and space charge density are measured by Thermal Step Method (TSM) and comparisons are made with breakdown value. Aramid paper presents the best electrical behavior with the highest breakdown strength and the lowest space charge density. On the contrary, polyester paper and inorganic paper contain more space charges and their breakdown field is smaller.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The well known different streamer modes, primary, secondary and tertiary streamers are shown to be the consequence of different electronic conductivity mechanisms such as resonance tunneling, hopping processes and quasi-free electron conductivity. However, streamer modes don't change continuously from primary to secondary modes, but discretely, which may be explained by different conduction mechanisms. Many parameters influencing breakdown behaviour of dielectric liquids, e.g. temperature, hydrostatic pressure, viscosity, and electrical field strength are discussed.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat.
