The samples tested are additive-free LDPE and LLDPE sheets. Two types of specimens were examined. The first one is a two-layered specimen consisting of a non-treated sheet and an acetophenone-soaked sheet. The second one is an LDPE or LLDPE sheet, onto which a few drops of acetophenone were spilt so that the sample surface was coated with acetophenone. The important conclusions obtained are as follows: (1) Positive charges are easy to migrate from the acetophenone-existing region to the non-existing region in the case of LDPE, while negative charges are difficult. (2) Both positive and negative charges are rather immobile in LLDPE, and they tend to accumulate at the interface between the acetophenone-existing and non-existing regions. (3) The values of mobility and conductivity calculated from the space charge profile agree with the assumption that ionic carriers are responsible for the conduction in the acetophenone-existing region.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The space charge radial distribution and different angular location in the insulating wall of a service aged XLPE cable, induced by application of a dc stress, was measured using the pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) method. Furthermore, a cross-section of sliced insulating wall was observed by optical microscopy to compare with the radial space charge distribution. The cable under investigation was electrically aged in service at 6.6 kV for 25 years in wet conditions. From the results of both observation of the space charge distribution and location of water tree, the water tree was found at the angular location in which the space charge was observed. On the other hand, the water tree was not found at the angular location in which the space charge was never observed. Judging from the results, the space charge measurement of the PEA method seems to be useful for the diagnosis of the water tree in aged cable.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The behavior of the water droplet was also investigated by using a high speed camera. In the case when AC high voltage was applied to the needle electrode, corona of the same polarity with the voltage applied to the needle was observed. When the water droplet tilted towards the positive electrode every half cycle, it was considered to possess a negative charge at the tilted tip of the water droplet.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The measurements of glass transition temperature and storage modulus were conducted using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). The defect evolution was investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) in control and aged specimens. The SEM microstructural analysis showed that the degradation occurred fast aged specimens in air as the size of cavities increases at the mica/epoxy interface. The aged specimens in hydrogen showed retarded generation and growth of cavities. All specimen showed cavities and cracks at the mica/epoxy interface. Which could cause premature failure. The microstructural analysis indicates that reducing defect formation in operation would greatly extend the lifetime of mica/epoxy composite.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The contact was dielectrically characterized by the TSDC technique. Two different locations were studied and the magnetic and dielectric results were correlated. Drying and rehydration treatments performed on these samples indicate that these peaks could be associated with physisorbed moisture. The dielectric relaxation peaks, located from 200 to 320 K, were related to water clusters confined In the pores. The direct signal analysis (DSA method) was applied to find the mean overlapping processes and the characteristic relaxations parameters. The pore dimension was determined from SEM microphotographs. Above the contact, a confining effect is observed and the peaks move towards lower temperatures as the pore size diminishes. Below the contact, as the pore sizes increase, adsorption effects mainly control these relaxations. The interaction between the clusters and the pore surface is mainly due to hydrogen bonding via terminal OH groups. Due to the change in the environment seen by the adsorbed water molecules, a variation in the mean reorientation energy is observed as the contact is approached, in the same lithological zone where NRM anomalies have been reported.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. Here we report the results of a series of experiments designed to investigate the extraction dynamics of such injected charge by following the decay of the measured charge subsequent to voltage removal. The investigated injection conditions covered a range of voltages (10 kV to 30 kV) equivalent to maximum applied fields of 190 MV/m to 590 MV/m, and times of application (5 to 100 ms). A modification of Lindmayer's model has been used to relate the observed charge decay plots to the energy range of filled traps. The variation of the trap range with different injection conditions, together with the observed changes in the depth of penetration allow us to make qualitative statements about the way in which charge injection proceeds in high divergent fields.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. There are too many factors associated with the degradation process, hence it is not easy to make an estimate about the useful service life of an insulator. However it is possible to reduce the variability observed in the tracking initiation times and tracking patterns by testing the samples in laboratory under predefined conditions (4 kV applied voltage and 36 ml/h flow rate of liquid). In this study, by using the ASTM D 2303 Inclined Plane Tracking Test method the effects of longitudinal compressive and tensile stress, ultraviolet (UV) radiation and wind pressure from different positions with respect to the surface of the sample under test have been investigated in detail. All samples have been prepared by using polyester resin without any accelerator. In all cases tracking initiation times were reduced significantly depending on the external conditions. UV radiation and wind pressure caused bushy type carbonised tracking patterns with wide branches around the high voltage electrode.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. Three different high temperature vulcanizing (HTV) silicone rubber (SiR) formulations were evaluated in a corona test cell. The magnitude and frequency of the corona discharges and the current flowing through the samples volume were recorded. The physical and chemical changes occurring on the compounds were monitored visually and by means of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results obtained from this study demonstrate that some HTV-SiR formulations used in high voltage outdoor insulation as housing materials may suffer from significant degradation even under the effect of relatively low magnitude corona discharges. On HTV-SiR compounds, such degradation process seems to be the moisture absorption characteristic of the polymer. These findings emphasize the importance of minimizing the occurrence of corona on non-ceramic insulators particularly when operating in outdoor environments.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. This applies in particular to distribution transformers up to 2500 kVA which are often installed close to load centers. Conventional liquid-insulated or dry-type transformers do not always fully meet today's requirements. In this paper, the present state of development of gas-insulated transformers is discussed. The fact that they are totally enclosed (safe to touch), their neutral gas filling, and the extremely small quantity of insulating material required, are described in detail.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat.
