Dielectric properties /spl chi/*(/spl omega/)=/spl chi/'-i/spl chi/'' were measured at different temperatures using low frequency dielectric spectroscopy technique. Without any ATH filler a classical interfacial relaxation was significant with dominating dc conduction in losses, /spl chi/''. By increasing the concentration of the filler a low frequency dispersion mechanism started to dominated in the relaxation behavior. With adding the filler, the dc conduction first decreased and then increased again after a certain concentration level was passed. This behavior showed that the filler particles acted like scattering centers or traps for conduction when the concentration was low. As the concentration increased the conductivity of the filler particles and of the interface (between filler particles and the polymer matrix) started to dominate the conduction. The effect of particle length, gap spacing and the DC biasing voltage on the corona onset and the breakdown voltages is also presented and discussed. The breakdown voltage of different gap spacing and DC biasing voltage is compared with calculated values. In this paper, several accelerated material water tree tests are reviewed. Three commercially introduced tree retardant materials were evaluated by the ASTM D6097 water treeing test under various conditions. The test parameters included aging time, temperature, water conductivity, applied voltage level, and frequency. As expected, the length of water tree increases with these factors, except temperature. Temperatures, higher than end use conditions should not be used as an acceleration factor. Not all tree retardant materials have the same water tree retardance, since each tree retardant material shows different response to the test parameters. A good tree retardant material should be very effective at various aging conditions. Effect of water absorption during aging in water and its recovery in air on the hydrophobicity of silicone rubber was measured. Both of the contact angle of distilled water on the sample surface and the hydrophobic surface image of water droplets on the surface were measured. The former was measured parallel (horizontal) to the surface and the latter was measured from vertical direction to the surface. Using CCD camera we digitized the hydrophobic images of the sample surface. The droplets on the surface were made not only distilled water, which had typical surface free energy of 72.8 mN/m, but also colored water and solutions that had lower surface free energies compared to the distilled water. Using these hydrophobic images hydrophobicity class (STRI's HC level) was determined by the observer and then by the image indexes. This paper discusses the characteristics of PD's which take place when a tree propagates from the tip of artificial channel by utilizing PD pulse sequence and single-pulse light emission. The PD pulse sequence showed that large and small PD's took place in a half cycle. The magnitude of positive PD pulses changed regularly in a half cycle. Each positive PD pulse took place when the applied voltage increased by a constant value. There was no correlation between the voltage increment and the PD magnitude. The conventional simple PD model can not explain these results. The AC breakdown voltages of various small air gaps (up to 0.2 m) formed by an energized conductor and a grounded electrode with a dielectric cylinder between them were measured. The energized electrode was a section of a power line conductor, the grounded electrode was either a standard rod or a 75 mm diameter sphere, and the insulating cylinder was resting on the conductor. The rod represented a tool held by a worker during live-line work, the sphere modelled the fist of a worker. Dry band arcing has been identified as a contributing factor in the short service life for some of these cables. It has been hypothesized that contamination on the jacket of the fiber optic cable will be an indicator of cable installations that will have a short service life. In this work a portable transducer for measuring contamination levels on the jacket of ADSS cable is being designed, constructed and calibrated in a high voltage environment. The transducer will be designed to operate in both wet and dry conditions. It will measure the electrical resistance per meter of contaminated in-service ADSS fiber optic cable. The transducer will be effective in the range 10/sup 5/ to 10/sup 7/ /spl Omega//m. It will be computer controlled thus requiring little intervention by the operator. This paper focuses on the performance reached by applying adhesion technology to increase the microscopic adhesion or bonding strength between Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ filler surfaces and an epoxy matrix. The filler type and the medium filler grain size are varied to find an optimum in the mechanical crack resistance parameters. Between each exposure the specimens were allowed to rest for at least 1000 h allowing recovery of hydrophobicity. The material with the dense network (M~/sub c/: 700 g/spl middot/mol/sup -1/) was, according to XPS, more oxidized compared to the less crosslinked material (M~/sub c/: 12000 g/spl middot/mol/sup -1/). The material with the dense network gradually decreased the rate of recovery of hydrophobicity with increasing dose of corona whereas it was only moderately retarded in the less crosslinked material. Scanning electron microscopy showed the formation of surface cracks in both materials after a certain dose of corona. The material with the dense network exhibited thinner (<1 /spl mu/m), more narrow cracks, whereas the less crosslinked material exhibited wider (>5 /spl mu/m), more curved surface cracks. In the less crosslinked material, new cracks were initiated at the bottom of older cracks. Thus by further oxidation of previously unoxidized PDMS in the bottom of the cracks, new cracks were formed. It is suggested that the build-up and the fracture of the silica-like surface layer influence the transport of low molar mass siloxanes to the surface, and the rate of recovery of hydrophobicity.","PeriodicalId":267509,"journal":{"name":"1999 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat.
