New information and communication technologies (ICT) to manage these “Smart Grids” are necessary to integrate a high share of renewable energy systems. Due to a high number of system components the optimal operation and control of “Smart Grids” is highly complex which is why this paper uses the approach of symbolic reduction to derive models with lower order for grid segments. Symbolic model reduction is a technique that analyses a set of equations and removes eqautions that do not influence the specified variables. The simulation study on a typical distribution grid shows a reduction by the factor of 2. The method of symbolic reduction has been applied to several sub grids of the CIGRE benchmark grid — a typical distribution grid. Local control strategies for feeding reactive power have been implemented for 10 cogeneration plants. Results show that the spread and the absolute value of the voltage band in the CIGRE grid decrease. This offers further degrees of freedom for the grid operation and further distributed generators can be connected.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122252521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method involves an approach of a proper training data selection for a PNN which classifies the operating conditions of a power system with high accuracy. The classification is based on the power system security against critical contingencies that may cause transient instabilities. By the proposed method, high classification performances are attained without requiring large training sets. This work also includes an application of multi-spread PNN structures which provide more flexibility in enhancing the security assessment performance. A simple genetic algorithm (GA) is applied to calculate proper spread parameters of multi-spread PNN structure. The proposed methods are implemented on the Iowa power system model and the results regarding dynamic security assessment performances are discussed.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122310136","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In practice, the smart grid concept is expected to be applied in various different forms and there will be a need for significant investments in both existing and new infrastructures. In this drastically evolving environment, policy makers and electric utilities are finding themselves in challenging positions to plan and prioritize methodologies and initiatives for future developments. Among others, decentralized power generation is gaining significance in liberalized electricity markets, and small size electricity consumers become also producers (prosumers). The scope of this paper is to map those factors (and their interactions) that influence the load profile, and provide a methodology for modeling the behavior of electricity prosumers. Simulations provide a time and cost effective way to vision the future power system and promote the most efficient solutions. The importance of including the behavior of a large amount of small size prosumers in power system simulations will be outlined, and this concept will be illustrated through an example of modeling car drivers' behavior in order to assess the grid impact of electric vehicles charging in Dutch residential areas.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125147778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They will be required to accommodate the increase in intermittent renewable energy as well as handle and display data related to energy flow characteristics across the entire deregulated energy value chain. This will require changing the way in which they operate in order to reduce emissions; improve efficiency while offering more ramping capabilities to the system. They will also have to change the way in which they transact with these new smarter grids. Accordingly, plant operators will require new operational cockpits for power plant control and management solutions facilitating decisions on alternative dispatch strategies, arbitration on asset life cycle management as well as real-time transactions with other portfolio players in the markets. Until now, real-time performance requirements and limited industry standardisation for data exchange with the energy eco-system outside the power plant led the industry towards highly customised solutions based on proprietary system platforms. In addition, the separation of the utility markets into generation, transmission and distribution has historically limited the opportunities to leverage software development for energy management across energy segments. As a results of the new Smart Grids awareness, new standardisation initiatives emerges as well as new recommendations to evolve IT platform strategies from proprietary web-based user interfaces towards Service-Oriented Architecture concepts while expanding standards and data models to their specific process characteristics.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125933053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is vital to understand the approaches being taken by these various entities in order to determine the optimal method by which to proceed with defining the smart grid and associated future developments. This survey was undertaken with the intent of determining representative approaches from various participants, and combining them into an overarching view of the industry as a whole. As a result, the more practical and efficient methods of improving the electrical grid were revealed, as well as gaps within the existing technology and standards. The most apparent gaps were determined to be in the following main areas: common communications; improved transmission and distribution controls; real-time information and incentives for both the end-user and the utility; self-healing grids; energy storage and renewable integration; and improved standards for the industry. In particular, future work into the development of improved control software for renewable integration utilizing energy storage is discussed, which will contribute to further research within the field.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129926927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Approximately 2500 private customers in Sweden participated in the 12-month test, giving the opportunity to follow up on their electricity consumption on an hourly level. The customers showed a genuine interest in the tool using it on a regularly basis and giving it high scores in the two major evaluations. The most interested customer profile was men living in houses. Since the customers voluntarily signed up the results are only valid for the interested population of the customers. The result from this test is now the base for a roll-out of a similar application in Vattenfall Finland and refined requirements on operations in Sweden, regarding preparations for a possible roll-out.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121484141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It provides a reduced-order model of the neighbor areas of a Transmission System Operator (TSO). When connected to the detailed representation of the TSO zone to be studied, this model is adequate for quick transient-stability studies. The approach is based on recent results in the topic of reduction which allow small size and robust (against daily variations of the grid situation) dynamic equivalents. The methodology is shown on the situation treated by the French TSO (Réseau de Transport d'Electricité — RTE) for its North-Eastern border.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121621636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

PEV battery chargers are high power nonlinear devices that can generate significant amount of current harmonics. PEVs will be an integral component to the operation of smart grids and therefore their power quality impacts must be thoroughly analyzed. Based on decoupled harmonic load flow analysis, different PEV charging scenarios (e.g., time zone scheduling, charging rate and penetration level) are tested for a typical large distribution network topology. The impacts of PEV charge rate on voltage profile, fundamental and harmonic losses, transformer loading and total harmonic distortions are demonstrated.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115508013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This architecture involves the definition of network blocks which share the responsibility of frequency control. The control block abstraction was particularly designed to support the transition from regular grids to smart grids. In addition, the control schemes were developed using an agent-based paradigm. Hence, an agent-based simulation platform was implemented using libraries from the Java Agent Development Framework (JADE). The control schemes were evaluated using a test system with different sorts of distributed energy resources and modeled in the EUROSTAG environment. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the control architecture when different failure events are applied to the test system.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129656149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An event-based power metering scheme is assumed where transmissions are sent only when a change occurs in household consumption. Analysis of highresolution, empirical data suggests that consumption transitions can be modeled as a Poisson process in the time-domain. A peer-to-peer 802.11 wireless network was simulated to determine latency between houses and a local sub-station. Probability distributions for monitoring and control traffic show that packet latency is exponential distributed and neighborhoods larger than 400 homes may not be able to respond within a fraction of the 60 Hz cycle.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129788930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
