This paper discusses the need, methods and challenges for maintenance optimization to improve the reliability, availability, and profitability of wind power plants being a major source of renewable energy today and in future “smart grids”. The present maintenance of wind power plants is extensive and costly, especially at offshore sites. The paper discusses approaches to maintenance strategy optimization aiming at reaching cost-efficient maintenance and thus enhanced profitability of wind power plants. It presents results from practical case studies utilising the method of Reliability-Centred Asset Maintenance and highlights the factors that impact the benefit of the maintenance strategies. The results show that new solutions for condition monitoring of the drive train and blades in wind turbines can be cost-efficient with respect to the reliability and availability of wind turbines today.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134540016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Distribution Automation (DA) is an integral part of the SG solution; however, disregarding human factors in the DA systems can make it more problematic than beneficial. As a consequence, Human-Automation Interaction (HAI) theories can be employed to optimize the DA systems in a human-centered manner. Earlier we introduced a novel framework for the realization of Adaptive Autonomy (AA) concept in the power distribution network using expert systems. This research presents a hybrid expert system for the realization of AA, using both Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Logistic Regression (LR) models, referred to as AAHES, respectively. AAHES uses neural networks and logistic regression as an expert system inference engine. This system fuses LR and ANN models' outputs which will results in a progress, comparing to both individual models. The practical list of environmental conditions and superior experts' judgments are used as the expert systems database. Since training samples will affect the expert systems performance, the AAHES is implemented using six different training sets. Finally, the results are interpreted in order to find the best training set. As revealed by the results, the presented AAHES can effectively determine the proper level of automation for changing the performance shaping factors of the HAI systems in the smart grid environment.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130854087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Analysis of the PMU performance first required the development of tools to convert the DTU PMU data into IEEE standard, and the validation is done for the DTU-PMU via a validated commercial PMU. The commercial PMU has been tested from the authors' previous efforts, where the response can be expected to follow known patterns and provide confirmation about the test system to confirm the design and settings. In a nutshell, having 2 PMUs that observe same signals provides validation of the operation and flags questionable results with more certainty. Moreover, the performance and accuracy of the DTU-PMU is tested acquiring good and precise results, when compared with a commercial phasor measurement device, PMU-1.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129853784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It consists of an in-depth description of a domestic smart grid, in which local energy consumers, producers and buffers can be controlled. First, from this description a general benchmark framework is derived, which can be used as a guideline to create benchmark sets to compare domestic smart grid management methodologies. Secondly, an implementation of such a benchmark set is discussed in full detail, to give an example on how to use the framework to create a benchmark set. The application area and validity of a benchmark set can be clearly defined and checked, by using the general framework.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114313241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dynamic behaviour of a power system is such that periods of instability may arise that are not solely due to large generators sitting beside each other in large plants. While these large machines operating at near full capacity certainly have an effect on modes in the system, the trigger may be something more inconspicuous like a smaller generator or load, or group thereof, that can produce instability in a number of system modes. The use of real-time continuous dynamics monitoring often indicates dynamic behaviour that was not anticipated by the modelbased studies. In such cases it can be difficult to track down the sources of problems using conventional tools. This paper details the possibility of diagnosing the causes of problems related to oscillatory stability using measurement-based techniques, with measurements derived from dynamic power system models. A dynamic model based on a real system is used to simulate periods of instability, so that the methodology can be applied to the data to determine the interaction of significant variables that contribute to poor mode damping. To this end, the discrete wavelet transform is used in conjunction with general linear models and logic regression to fit the model data and to predict the system response with minimum statistical deviance. This measurement-based modelling technique could then be used in real time with real system variables to determine the best course of action to rectify a range of dynamics problems.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132261180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed model can consider capacity limitations and transmission line forced outage rates. The importance of renewable energy sources has been growing at a high rate as a result of being environment friendly. In particular, wind energy is one of the most successfully utilized such source to produce electrical energy. The random nature of wind speed can be incorporated in the evaluation by representing the WTG by multi state models. Furthermore, web based online real-time reliability integrated information system (WORRIS) was developed with the proposed methodology in this paper. This paper describes architecture of the WORRIS Version 1.0 system developed preliminarily in this study. It is originally a reliability information system based one day go ahead system.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133618532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By injecting active power in the timeframe of hundreds of milliseconds up to a few seconds after the loss of a generating unit, fast-acting storage can support the conventional production assets during the activation of their primary reserve. Using dynamic and hardware-in-the-loop (realtime) simulations, the provision of such a dynamic frequency control support by distributed energy storage systems has been studied in the case of the French island of Guadeloupe. Dedicated control algorithms have been developed and tested on a small-scale ultracapacitor storage unit. By acting as a virtual inertia, it has been shown that fast storage systems can improve substantially the dynamic performances of electrical islands.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133461954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Industrial customers connected to the distribution grid were interviewed regarding their sensitivity towards interruptions and how the cost related to the duration of the interruption, focusing on the individual customer. Most former surveys have looked at average values over a number of customers within the same group. Some applications of the information gathered in this way are discussed, also related to the smart grid concept. One important conclusion that can be drawn from the study is that the interruption cost for each individual customer needs to be investigated.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125706030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Microgrids are expected to form an essential part of future Smart Grids with self-healing feature. Most of the time microgrids will be operated normally parallel with utility grid. In addition to this microgrids have a special self-healing capability, because they can continue operation also in island mode during disturbances, e.g., utility grid outages. One important issue which needs to be solved is the synchronized reconnection of island operated microgrid back to utility grid. In this paper issues related to the re-connection of low voltage (LV) microgrid are studied and different functions to enable synchronized re-connection are presented with various DG unit configurations through simulation studies with PSCAD simulation software.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125763901","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
