This article describes possibilities, experiences and challenges for a standard platform for integrated soft protection and control of AC substations. The benefits of such a solution have been described in several papers [X], [Y]. Field tests also show that it works in reality. With the development of the process bus IEC 61850–9–2 there is now also a solution for connecting distributed I/O's in a standardized way. The possibility to buy equipment from different vendors leads to competition and decreased prices. The next step is to create a scalable environment where the functions can adopt to the needs in the specific substation and the present situation in the network, ie future smart grids. Most of these functions can be implemented with the existing distributed solutions based on IEC 61850 but the development of an open system platform makes it possible to integrate functions from different vendors and thus create full flexibility. The article describes possible benefits as well as potential challenges before reaching a totally integrated solution.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115648986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the critical factors is the control system reliability. While a lot of work has been done on the technical and economic aspects of active distribution network management, almost no attention has been paid to the impact of the reliability of control and communication systems on the expected benefits of active management strategies. This paper investigates the impact of control system reliability on the benefits of AM. The reliability of the control system is assessed through a state enumeration approach, with different load levels. The results for the specific test case suggest that the load level and AM control system reliability should be jointly taken into account for a comprehensive analysis on the overall cost benefit of AM compared to Traditional Reinforcement Scheme (TRS), and that under each load level the economic benefit of AM improves with the improvement of AM control system reliability.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124945458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand multi-agents systems are attracting growing interest for different applications of substation automation systems. In multiagent systems agents represent different stake holders in the power system and based on implemented decision making logic they determine optimal operational conditions for the power system's given boundary conditions. Interoperability is of course a necessary pre-requisite for such architectures. Here we identify two aspects of interoperability; horizontal and vertical. Horizontal interoperability is relies on common semantic models of the power system that the agents can use to make decisions. One such semantic model is presented in the IEC 61970 Common Information Model (CIM). At this level, the IEC 61850 standard provides a model for access to information and control functions that has the necessary flexibility needed. In this paper we discuss the mapping between a multi-agent based architecture for power system control and the IEC 61850 standard for utility automation. The mapping is based on a use-case drive approach, in which the information exchange need is defined by the multi-agent system.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126040149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The voltage rise can be mitigated using passive methods such as increasing the conductor size which can, however, be quite expensive. Also active voltage control methods can be used to reduce the maximum voltage in the network. In many cases active voltage control can increase the capacity of connectable DG substantially which can lead to significantly lower connection costs. In this paper, operation of an active voltage control algorithm is viewed. The algorithm controls the substation voltage and DG reactive power and determines its control actions based on the state of the whole network. The algorithm is implemented as a Matlab program and communication between Matlab and SCADA is realized using OPC Data Access. Correct operation of the algorithm is verified using Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS). The same algorithm could also be implemented as a part of the distribution management system (DMS).","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115051128","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If a centralized approach is considered, a central, single scheduling unit needs to know for each energy resource what schedules comply with all given constraints, because only these are operable and might be taken into account for optimization. As many constraints depend on state or time, sets of currently operable alternatives have repeatedly to be communicated to the scheduler in order to avoid central modeling of each single resource. We here present a support vector based approach for learning a highly efficient geometric representation of the space of feasible alternatives for operable schedules. This description is communicated to the scheduler and the encoded information implicitly contains all constraints and therefore makes their modeling dispensable at scheduler side.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129690997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The used Demand Side Management model is focused on controlling heat pumps, electrical vehicles and white goods. The aim is to analyze the use of DSM regarding the increasing fluctuating power feed-in which is a result of the growing renewable energy sources (e.g. wind turbines and photovoltaic installations). The target function of the used model is to plane the residual load curve. To evaluate the influence on the German system load, the residual load curve will be analyzed with two key parameters: the shift potential and the volatility change factor. The shift potential expresses the maximum, simultaneous reduction of the peak of the residual load curve. The volatility change factor describes the relation between the diversity of the maximum and the minimum power before and after using the DSM. The effectiveness of the DSM by the used model is estimated and the outstanding points are declared.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129261735","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For a best integration of these distributed generators, the voltage regulation system must also be distributed. In this paper, a decentralization of voltage regulation using multi-agent system technique is proposed. Each agent has a local multi-objective optimization function and controls the voltage at its wind generator bus and participates in voltage regulation of pilot bus. This one represents the voltage variations in all buses. All agents are coordinating together and the coordination is cooperative. To manage this coordination, different interaction protocols are developed. To test this decentralized strategy, an experimental platform is performed. Multi-agent system can operate in a realtime environment that combines simulation system and network communication. Some experimental results are presented.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124178006","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The latter introduces both intermittency and uncertainty into the grid, both of which can affect the underlying energy market. An interesting concept that is being explored for mitigating the integration cost of RERs is Demand Response. Implemented as a time-varying retail electricity price in real-time, Demand Response has a direct impact on the underlying energy market as well. In this paper, beginning with an overall model of the major market participants together with the constraints of transmission and generation, the energy market is analyzed in the presence of both RERs and Demand Response. The effect of uncertainties in the RER on the market equilibrium is quantified, with and without real-time pricing. Standard KKT criteria are used to derive optimality conditions. Perturbation analysis methods are used to compare the equilibria in the nominal and perturbed cases. Sufficient conditions are derived for the existence of a unique equilibrium for the perturbed market. Numerical studies are reported using a 4-node IEEE bus to validate the theoretical results.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121560014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the next years it is expected that there will be a considerable increase in the numbers of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs). Based on different charging scenarios, this paper investigates the impact of PHEVs on the French electric grid. Solutions are proposed to increase the maximum penetration rate. Hence we estimate that the French electric grid can accommodate 72% of PHEVs in 2015. This makes it possible to reduce oil imports for France by 22.5% and CO2 emissions due to road transport by 18%.","PeriodicalId":267185,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT Europe)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126346719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
