Such a state of literature can be called a \"defect\". If literature is thus faulty, it is because it is specific to a period (since early modern times) when the being defected (according to Certeau, a voice which was previously audible, fell silent). In 1975, he reproduced this text in his proper book L’Ecriture de l’histoire, with another headline, “L’operation historiographique”, in a version which was augmented of a third part. While comparing these two versions of a single text, we can understand how Michel de Certeau then considered the historian’s work, in the light of literary theory and psychoanalysis, at time when this position was rare among French historians. Literature is not central to the work of Michel de Certeau. On the contrary, it is often the object of a critique, even of a scalding irony. Is his use of literature merely that of a historian? Poetic fragments are insistantly present in his work however. Throughout his work, by means of theoretical criticism and of his use of quotes, he builds two paradigms for literature: one based on propriety and property (Robinson Crusoe), and one based on disappropriation, belief (poetry and mysticism). Cela va de pair avec ses reflexions sur l’historiographie, qui s’inspirent de son engagement dans les revues savantes. How can we understand this way of writing which is often considered out of any strong necessity? Such is the question addressed in this paper. Starting with a detour through the emergence of the metaphor in a text of Francois de Sales, and through the unveiling of his theological implications, I try to tackle the metaphorical practice at stake in scholarly writing of Certeau, dually based on a founding reference and in a constitutive gap towards Scripture.
