As numerical tools, a hybrid Transmission-Line Matrix (TLM) modeling method and modal approach is applied. The non-homogeneous volumes are discretized upon TLM, while the planar structures are modelled with the mode matching approach. Thanks to the use of the proposed new multilayer technology, it not only can very conveniently realize a very strong coupling to achieve a wideband, but also can achieve more miniaturized size in comparison of the conventional design based on the LCP technology. In addition, two dissimilar quarter-wavelength stepped-impedance resonators with tapped input/output coupling were adopted in the design, which resulted in two transmission zeros in the upper stopband to improve the upper stopband performance. For the sake of antenna characterization, a 2×2mm2 monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) including a 77-GHz transceiver and a frequency multiplier is integrated in the package. The frequency multiplier generates the eighteenth harmonic of its input signal and scales a 4.25-GHz input signal to a 76.5-GHz output signal. This enables the antenna beam pattern characterization using a commercial signal source. As the dimensions of a single-element antenna in package (AiP) hardly exceeds the dimension of the MMIC, an AiP typically suffers from an asymmetric beam pattern and limited gain. The transmitter incorporates a tunable load network class-E PA as the final output stage. The tunable load network enables dynamic optimization of the class-E along with the duty cycle resulting in high efficiency over a wide range of output power levels. A digital predistiortion based linearization scheme is proposed to enhance the linearity of the transmitter. After linearization, the transmitter exhibits an adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) of -45 dBc with a 3.84 MHz, 6.7 dB peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) W-CDMA signal. Since a DL TL has three arbitrary phase constants at three target frequencies, the combination of a DL TL and a band-pass filter can have tri-band isolation characteristic. The quadruplexer, discussed in this paper, consists of four tri-band isolation circuits, and each circuit is isolated from an input at the center frequencies of filters of other channels. As a result, the combined four circuits can satisfy the required characteristics for a quadruplexer. This quadruplexer has two significant advantages. Since modifying filters is not required and there is no limitation to choose filters, commercial filters can be used for a quadruplexer. Also, the quadruplexer can be designed easily with a simple and straightforward design concept. Thus a complex numerical optimization is not necessary. For verifying the design concept, a quadruplexer, which has 942.5 MHz, 1575 MHz, 2140 MHz, and 2450 MHz center frequencies, is designed and fabricated. Filters are commercial Surface Mounted (SMT) type. The controllable left-handed metamaterial is based on periodically printed sub-wavelength metallic resonant patterns with embedded microwave varactors. By controlling the phase properties of the radome, the antenna exhibits continuous scanning capability in a range of ±30° under very simple DC voltage control that does not exceed 10 volts. Simulation results on such structure are given, which agrees well with the theoretical analysis. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of RF energy harvesting, RF field investigations and analysis of maximum available power in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia are conducted. Measurement results and analysis indicate that broadcasting system at 540 MHz (with 20 MHz bandwidth) and 100 MHz (88-108 MHz) are great scavenging sources. These frequency ranges provide stable RF signal levels and low propagation loss, produce maximum available power to a range of locations. The sensor comprises a resonant inductor-capacitor circuit that is inductively coupled to a separate interrogating coil. The resonant circuit is mounted on the stationary face of the mechanical seal. A temperature rise is sensed as a resonant frequency increase, caused by a decrease in the sensor capacitance value. The resonant sensor is implemented using commercially-available components and has a footprint of less than 5.12 mm2. Despite the very close proximity to the steel shaft (0.79 mm) and the stainless steel flange (2 mm), successful interrogation is achieved and the sensor's frequency is increased linearly from 41.1 MHz to 41.6 MHz for a temperature increase from 25°C to 80°C. The measurements are verified by simulating the system using a combination of HFSS-ADS EM-circuit co-simulation model. The filters are based on coupled coaxial resonators embedded into the dielectric and conveniently loaded with GaAs varactors. Firstly, a 2-pole filter demonstrator has been fabricated on a low-cost substrate showing a tunable centre frequency between 2.64 - 2.88 GHz with 1.27 - 3.63 dB insertion losses across the tuning range. Then, the application of this approach to post-fabrication fine tuning of narrow-band multi-pole filters is studied.
